On a superhydrophobic surface, the internal fluidity of water droplets with different volumes (15, 30 microL) and their horizontal motion in an external electric field were evaluated using particle image velocimetry (PIV). For driving of water droplets on a superhydrophobic coating between parallel electrodes, it was important to place them at appropriate positions. Droplets moved with slipping. Small droplets showed deformation that is more remarkable. Results show that the dielectrophoretic force ...

In this study, we prepared various superhydrophobic surfaces using ZnO nanorod arrays (ZnO-NR) of different diameters. The contact angle was equivalent to the calculated value if it is assuming that the topmost surface of the rods is a solid-liquid contact area. On the superhydrophobic ZnO-NR surfaces, the 5 microL water droplets slid down by constant acceleration motion. Sliding acceleration was governed by the solid area fraction. The resistance force of the actual measurement was consistent with ...

We have fabricated thin films of a van der Waals (vdW) ferromagnetic metal Fe5GeTe2 and characterized them by measuring the anomalous Hall effect. While the bulk Fe5GeTe2 does not exhibit a perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) unlike Fe3GeTe2, PMA emerges in the thin film devices. Furthermore, the PMA is enhanced with decreasing thickness of Fe5GeTe2. In particular, a thin film (5 unit-cell layer) device fabricated with Fe5GeTe2 quenched at 1050 K has two times larger coercive field than that prepared ...

Abstract Electrical memory switching has been observed in the metal/Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) film/metal sandwich structure with a noble metal base electrode. Switching from a non-conducting OFF state to a conducting ON state (WRITE operation) and/or switching back to the OFF state (ERASE) are/is possible by applying adequate voltage; however, when the voltage is reduced, both OFF and ON states remain the same. A memory system utilizing an LB film and a scanning tunnelling microscope, has been proposed.

A novel methane-producing archaeon, designated strain HASUT, was isolated from a lotus field. Cells were Gram-negative, non-motile, irregular cocci, 2–3 μm in diameter, and occurred singly. Growth was observed at 15–40 °C (optimum, 37 °C) and pH 6.5–7.5 (optimum, pH 7.0). The G+C content of the genomic DNA was 60.9 mol%. Strain HASUT utilized ethanol, 1-propanol, 1-butanol, hydrogen and formate for growth and methane production. It converted ethanol to methane and acetate. Based on comparative 16S rRNA ...

However, aqueous extracts of Stylotella aurantium and Axinella carteri collected in Yap State, Micronesia, afforded a known N-methyl-d-aspartic acid (NMDA)-type glutamate receptor agonist, (2S,4S)-4-sulfooxypiperidine-2-carboxylic acid (2), as a common active ...

The possible role of leptin in colorectal tumors has been investigated in previous studies; however, to date, the conclusions remain under debate. Therefore, we investigated the serum leptin levels in colorectal adenoma patients. In addition, expression of the leptin receptor, and the leptin receptor-mediated signaling pathways were investigated in biopsy specimens collected from human patients with colorectal adenoma. No significant difference in the mean serum leptin level was observed between ...

Activating synthetic ligands for peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPARgamma), such as pioglitazone, are commonly used to treat persons with diabetes mellitus with improvement of insulin resistance. Several reports have clearly demonstrated that PPARgamma ligands could inhibit colorectal cancer cell growth and induce apoptosis. Meanwhile, aberrant crypt foci (ACF) have come to be established as a biomarker of the risk of CRC in azoxymethane-treated mice and rats. In humans, ACF can ...

Summary Metastasis is responsible for most cancer deaths. Here, we show that Aes (or Grg5 ) gene functions as an endogenous metastasis suppressor. Expression of Aes was decreased in liver metastases compared with primary colon tumors in both mice and humans. Aes inhibited Notch signaling by converting active Rbpj transcription complexes into repression complexes on insoluble nuclear matrix. In tumor cells, Notch signaling was triggered by ligands on adjoining blood vessels, and stimulated transendothelial ...

We investigate the $S=1/2$ quantum spin antiferromagnets on the triangular and Kagome lattices in magnetic field, using the numerical exact diagonalization. Particularly we focus on an anomalous magnetization behavior of each system at 1/3 of the saturation magnetization. The critical exponent analyses suggest that it is a conventional magnetization plateau on the triangular lattice, while an unconventional phenomenon, called the magnetization ramp, on the Kagome lattice.

The rupture forces of porous alginate scaffolds seeded with hepatocytes or fibroblast-like cells increased during 3 d of culture and then decreased. Scanning electron microscopy observation revealed that alloying with Ge accelerated the grain growth during the sulfurization process, contributing to the improvement in the conversion efficiency. All-trans-retinoic acid (RA) plays a critical role in maintaining immune homeostasis. Mouse intestinal CD103⁺ dendritic cells (DCs) produce a high level of RA by highly expressing retinal dehydrogenase (RALDH)2, an enzyme that converts retinal to RA, and induce gut-homing T cells. However, it has not been identified which subset of human DCs produce a high level of RA. In this study, we show that CD1c⁺ blood myeloid DCs (mDCs) but not CD141(high) mDCs or plasmacytoid DCs exhibited a high level of RALDH2 ...

A combined system of inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) with ion chromatography (IC) was used for the speciation of the chromium (Cr) species. After chelation with ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA), Cr(III) and Cr(VI) were separated by anion-exchange chromatography. Subsequently, eluates from a separation column were directly introduced into the ICP-MS and detected at m/z 52 and 53. Separation parameters were optimized for the chromium species. Excelpak ICS-A23 (75 × 4.6 mm I.D.) ...

The human dopamine D4 receptor (DRD4) is of major interest in molecular studies of schizophrenia and personality traits. We examined the association of schizophrenia and polymorphisms in the upstream region of the DRD4 gene (−768G>A in the negative modulator region; −521C>T, −376C>T, and −291C>T in the cell type-specific promoter region; and −616C>G between the two regions) in 208 schizophrenic patients and 210 normal controls. No significant difference in genotype and allele frequencies was observed between ...
