To the Editor: Pemphigus is an autoimmune skin disease that is divided into two major subtypes—pemphigus vulgaris (PV) and pemphigus foliaceus (PF).1 Pemphigus herpetiformis (PH) is recognized as a distinct variant of pemphigus by its pruritus, rarity of mucosal involvement, histologically eosinophilic spongiosis, and good response to sulfones. Clinical characteristics of PH include erythematous papules and plaques with occasional vesicles in a herpetiform arrangement.2 The major target antigens of ...

Reductive metabolism of carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) is thought to cause lipid peroxidation which results in hepatic injury. Heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) (EC 1.14.99.3), the rate-limiting enzyme in heme catabolism, is known to be induced by oxidative stress and to confer protection against oxidative tissue injuries. In this study, we examined the role of HO-1 induction in a rat model of CCl4-induced acute liver injury. CCl4 treatment (1 mL/kg, intraperitoneally) produced severe hepatic injury in rats as revealed ...

The influence of the high-rise building on the amplification of the wind speed at ground level is investigated using the techniques of field observation and wind tunnel experiments. The first half of the investigation is observation of the wind flow around a high-rise building in a built-up area of Tokyo, Japan. Changes in the air flow pattern and amplification of wind speed at ground level due to the construction are clarified. The latter half consists of the wind tunnel experiments. A model of ...

The zero-field magnetism of a two-dimensional noncollinear antiferromagnet, κ-(BEDT-TTF)2Cu[N(CN)2]Cl, has been investigated by magnetization and zero-field muon spin rotation (μSR) measurements. Low-field magnetization measurements enabled us to determine the magnetic transition temperature TN as 22.80 ± 0.02 K. Distinct muon spin precession signals appeared below 21.4 K. μSR spectra below 21.4 K were well described by two types of precession components and a relaxation one. The temperature dependence ...

From 1992 through 2001, 29 patients with stage I esophageal cancer were treated with radiation therapy. All patients had squamous cell carcinoma. Seventeen patients were treated with radiotherapy alone, and 12 were treated with a combination of chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Most of the chemotherapy regimens included cisplatin and/or 5-fluorouracil (5-FU). Twelve patients were treated with intracavitary irradiation (low-dose rate: 6, high-dose rate: 6) after external radiotherapy. Median fraction ...

Seasonal variation of extractive nitrogenous components in the muscle of the cultured ascidian Halocynthia roretzi was investigated in the specimens collected bimonthly from January 1983 to January 1984 at Okkirai Bay, Iwate Prefecture. The ascidian muscle extracts were characterized by being rich in free amino acids, especially in taurine, proline, glutamic acid, glycine, alanine and histidine. Considerable amounts of quaternary ammonium bases such as glycinebetaine and homarine were found, but ...

The interaction of benzeneboronic acid(BBA), a possible transition state analog, with subtilisin BPN' [EC 3.4.21.14] was studied by the temperature-jump method at various pH's, temperatures and in D2O as well as H2O. From analysis of the concentration dependence of the relaxation times, it was suggested that the subtillsin-BBA interactions consist of at least two elementary steps, a fast bimolecular association followed by a slow unimolecular process. Similar concentration dependence was observed ...

Hydrogen gas generation is observed in the wet cutting of aluminum and its alloys. This phenomenon is due to a chemical reaction between the fresh surface of aluminum and water. The reaction is sensitive to the freshness and it is safe and easy to control. Some trials were made to increase the hydrogen gas generation. The possibility is discussed of using this phenomenon as a hydrogen gas generator in the field of automotive engineering that uses a fuel cell.

Inhibitory effects of about twenty five tannins and their related compounds on autoxidation of methyl linoleate were studied by kinetic, static and in situ electron spin resonance (ESR) measurements. Almost all tannins examined showed nearly as large inhibitory effects as that of α-tocopherol. Polyphenols with low molecular weight, such as gallic acid, pyrogallol etc., showed a minor inhibitory effect. The rate of inhibition by tannins was represented as follows : Vinh=-d[O2]/dt=k[RH]1.2[AIBN]0.6[Tannin]- ...

We report on three cases of HBV infection among members of a wrestling club. CASE REPORT:A 19-year-old male wrestling athlete was admitted with acute hepatitis B. Five months later, 2 other men, who were members of the same wrestling club, were diagnosed with HBV infection. The full-length sequences of the HBV ...

Abstract We investigated the prevalence of Staphylococcus aureus on shopping baskets in Osaka Prefecture, Japan. Multilocus sequence typing was performed to determine the genotypes of S. aureus isolates, and then a polymerase chain reaction method was used to detect staphylococcal enterotoxins and antibiotic resistance genes. In addition, desiccation tolerance of S. aureus isolates was evaluated in vitro. Forty‐six (6.2%) S. aureus isolates were collected from 740 shopping baskets, though only one ...

PIR-A and PIR-B are activating and inhibitory Ig-like receptors on murine B lymphocytes, dendritic cells, and myeloid-lineage cells. The inhibitory function of PIR-B is mediated via its cytoplasmic immunoreceptor tyrosine-based inhibitory motifs, whereas PIR-A pairs with the Fc receptor common gamma chain to form an activating receptor complex. In these studies, we observed constitutive tyrosine phosphorylation of PIR-B molecules on macrophages and B lymphocytes, irrespective of the cell activation ...

Streptomyces subtilisin inhibitor, a dimeric protein proteinase inhibitor isolated in crystalline form by Murae et al. in 1972, contains three tyrosine and one tryptophan residues per monomer unit and has unusual fluorescence properties. When excited at ...

By making use of the WAM data archive, 6 bright GRBs exhibiting 7 well-separated fast-rise-exponential-decay (FRED) shaped light curves are presented, and the evaluated exponential decay time constants of the energy-resolved light curves from these FRED peak light curves are shown to indicate significant spectral evolution. Hydroponics is an excellent technique for the cultivation of vegetable crops and other plants, but organic fertilizers cannot be used in conventional hydroponic systems, which generally use only inorganic fertilizers, because organic compounds in the hydroponic solutions generally have phytotoxic effects that lead to poor plant growth. A sensitive and fast-responsive evanescent wave absorption sensor has been constructed for pH measurements in highly acidic ranges. This sensor is based on a pH-dependent color change of protoporphyrin IX (PPIX). For the sensitive detection, a visible attenuated total reflection spectrometer with a slab optical waveguide (SOWG) was laboratory-made, and the guiding layer surface was modified with a PPIX-immobilized acrylamide-based thin membrane. The sensing membrane with a thickness of approximately ...

The aim of this study was to elucidate the role of SUMO-1 modification in caspase-7 in neuronal cells. We have previously demonstrated that procaspase-2 could be a possible target for SUMO-1 modification. In the present study, we attempted to investigate whether other caspases also interact with Ubc9/SUMO-1. The specific binding of SUMO-1 with caspase-7 was observed in mammalian cells. Deletion mutant analysis revealed that a SUMO-1 modification site may be located in at least N-terminal p20 subunit ...
