OBJECTIVE Craniopharyngiomas remain a particularly formidable challenge in the neurosurgical field. Because these lesions involve the hypothalamus and ophthalmological systems, their resection is associated with either higher rates of mortality and recurrence or a lower rate of radical resection. The authors report the outcomes of aggressive surgeries based on an anatomical subclassification of craniopharyngiomas. METHODS Clinical and ophthalmological examinations, imaging studies, endocrinological ...

Background —Experiments under controlled flow conditions indicate that the binding of von Willebrand factor (vWF) to platelet glycoprotein (GP) Ibα and integrin α IIb β 3 (GP IIb/IIIa complex) is crucial for aggregation at elevated shear rates. We have tested how the plasma of patients with acute myocardial infarction affects this process. Methods and Results —Citrated plasma was obtained from 18 patients with acute myocardial infarction within 6 hours from the onset of symptoms and from 26 control subjects ...

We have studied the origin of the cooperative Jahn-Teller effect and the metamagnetic transition in the orthorhombic compound PrCu 2 . We have determined the anisotropic ferroquadrupole phase diagram by measuring the specific heat and thermal expansion under magnetic fields. With increasing the field, the Jahn-Teller transition temperature increases slightly for the field along a - and c -axes, while it decreases intensively along the b -axis. The phase diagram can be explained quantitatively by including ...

The current methods for evaluating islet potency are not useful in clinical transplantation. Therefore, we need reliable, rapid methods enabling accurate prediction of islet quality. We evaluated respiratory activity using scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM), glucose-stimulated respiratory activity, glucose-stimulated insulin release, ADP/ATP assays, insulin/DNA levels, and Trypan blue exclusion tests as predictive methods for the ability of isolated rat islets to cure syngeneic diabetic rats. ...

Abstract Alzheimer’s disease is a neurodegenerative disease that imposes a substantial financial burden on society. A number of machine learning studies have been conducted to predict the speed of its progression, which varies widely among different individuals, for recruiting fast progressors in future clinical trials. However, because the data in this field are very limited, two problems have yet to be solved: the first is that models built on limited data tend to induce overfitting and have low ...

Golden (Syrian) hamster (Mesocricetus auratus) is a small animal model of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infections. Pathological analyses of the tissues are required to understand the pathogenesis of SARS-CoV-2 and the evaluation of therapeutic modalities, including neutralizing monoclonal antibodies (mAbs). However, mAbs that recognize the golden hamster-derived antigens and distinguish specific cell types, such as the pneumocytes, are limited. Podoplanin (PDPN) is an ...

A series of novel tetrahydropyrazolopyrimidine derivatives containing an adamantyl group were synthesized and evaluated as potential calcium-sensing receptor (CaSR) antagonists. After chemical modification of 9a, which was identified as a hit compound in a random screening of CaSR antagonist assay, 7,7-dimethyl derivative 16c was found to be the most active compound of this new series (IC(50)=10nM). We report the synthesis of this series and their biological activities and structure-activity relationship.

Biodiesel derived from palm oil has been recognized as a high-productivity oil crop among the first generation of biofuels. This study evaluated and discussed the net energy balance for biodiesel in Indonesia by calculating the net energy ratio (NER) and net energy production (NEP) form the total energy input and output. The results of the calculation of energy input for the default scenario demonstrated that the primary energy inputs in the biodiesel production lifecycle were the methanol feedstock, ...

Although mycoplasmal pneumonia has been generally considered to be a disease with good prognosis, a pathogenic host immune response has been associated with its occurrence. In the present study, the pathogenic significance of the immune response was examined using germ-free mice either infected intranasally with Mycoplasma pneumoniae or inoculated with M. pneumoniae antigens (soluble antigen and partially purified antigen). In gnotobiotic mice monoassociated with M. pneumoniae, 10(4) c.f.u. M. pneumoniae ...

Recently we proposed the therapeutic potential of pyruvate therapy for mitochondrial diseases. Leigh syndrome is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder ascribed to either mitochondrial or nuclear DNA mutations. In an attempt to circumvent the mitochondrial dysfunction, we orally applied sodium pyruvate and analyzed its effect on an 11-year-old female with Leigh syndrome due to cytochrome c oxidase deficiency accompanied by cardiomyopathy. The patient was administered sodium pyruvate at a maintenance ...

Cortisol levels in body fluids are useful for monitoring the function of the pituitary-adrenal axis. Here, we established an "enzyme-linked immunometric assay" (a noncompetitive-type ELISA) for cortisol based on idiotype-anti-idiotype reactions. Six different anti-idiotype monoclonal antibodies that recognized the variable regions of a newly established anti-cortisol antibody were generated using hybridoma technology; these were two beta-type and four alpha-type anti-idiotype antibodies, recognizing ...

Enzymatic glyco-modification of transparent cellulose films with lactose was achieved by nonaqueous biocatalysis, and rat hepatocyte attachment behavior to the lactose-modified cellulose films was investigated. Regenerated cellulose films were incubated with lactose using a surfactant-enveloped cellulase in lithium chloride/dimethylacetamide solvent at 37 °C for 24 h, and lactose molecules were successfully introduced to the cellulose films. The initial cell adhesion on the lactose-modified cellulose ...

Glyco-modification of a solid cellulose surface with lactosevia an enzymatic reaction was successfully achieved using a surfactant-enveloped enzyme (SEE) in a lithium chloride/dimethylacetamide solvent system. The unique biocatalyst, SEE, which is active in organic media, was prepared by protecting the surface of cellulase with the specific nonionic surfactant dioleyl-N-D-glucona-L-glutamate. Lactose, a second cellulase substrate, was introduced onto cellulose surfaces viaSEE-mediated enzymatic reaction. ...

A new gas-cooled rotating target system was developed for the heaviest element production. A target wheel with a diameter of 30.0 cm could be rotated up to 3000 rpm. A helium gas introduced into the target chamber mounted upstream of a gas-filled recoil separator, which enables an effective gas cooling of the target. The development has led to the successful production of heavy nuclides via cold fusion reactions of 208Pb(64Ni,n)271Ds, 209Bi(64Ni,n)272Rg, 208Pb(70Zn,n)277112, and 209Bi(70Zn,n)278113.

A novel series of androgen receptor (AR) ligands bearing an acidic heterocycle with hydrogen-bonding ability as the terminal polar group was developed. Since most non-steroidal AR ligands so far known are structurally limited to nitro- or cyanobenzanilide as the polar pharmacophore, development of alternative hydrogen-bonding components is required to obtain novel AR ligands. Various acidic heterocycles were introduced into a hydrophobic phenylcarborane (1-phenyl-1,12-dicarba-closo-dodecaborane) core ...

A multicenter prospective cohort study to assess the occurrence and characteristics of acute Q fever associated with community acquired respiratory infections was performed. Among the 400 patients enrolled for the study, 10 (2.50%) patients (5 out of 120 cases of pneumonia, 3 out of 131 cases of acute bronchitis, and 2 out of 149 cases of upper respiratory infections) were diagnosed as having acute Q fever. Contact with dogs or cats before the onset of the disease was confirmed in most of the patients. ...
