A tomographic inversion method is presented for the determination of 3-D velocity and interface structure from a wide range of body-wave seismic traveltime data types. It is applicable to refraction, wide-angle reflection, normal-incidence and multichannel seismic data, and is best suited to a combination of these that provides good independent constraints on seismic velocities and interface depths. The inversion process seeks a layer–interface minimum-structure model that is able to explain the ...

The use of Alcohol-based antiseptics is efficient and approved, however it has some limitations. This paper examined the possibility of using hypochlorite water as a chlorine-based antiseptic for handwashing in public buildings and healthcare facilities. The electrolysis method was used, which produces Hypochlorous acid (HOCl) from mixing drinking water with small amounts of sodium hydroxide. Hypochlorous acid is usually produced by blood cells to surround pathogens when the skin is cut and exposed ...

We present a method enabling the noninvasive study of minute cellular changes in response to stimuli, based on the acquisition of multiple parameters through label-free microscopy. The retrieved parameters are related to different attributes of the cell. Morphological variables are extracted from quantitative phase microscopy and autofluorescence images, while molecular indicators are retrieved via Raman spectroscopy. We show that these independent parameters can be used to build a multivariate ...

Although live cell imaging is desirable, it is not always feasible and in many situations cells are fixed in order to provide a 'snapshot' of the nature and distribution of molecules within a cell while minimising changes from cell movement, sample degradation etc. There is a wide range of fixation methods available that act via different mechanisms, and on different cell components. Each method has advantages and disadvantages and a choice of what fixation method to choose for a particular experiment ...

Unactivated lymphocytes are morphologically identical and biochemically relatively similar, making them difficult to distinguish from one another with conventional light microscopy. Here, we use Raman spectroscopy to provide biochemical information on the composition of different lymphocyte cell lines. As could be expected, the biochemical differences measured with Raman spectroscopy between lymphocyte cell lines are small, but in combination with partial least squares discriminant analysis it is ...

Finite-difference simulations are an important tool for studying elastic and acoustic wave propagation, but remain computationally challenging for elastic waves in three dimensions. Computations for acoustic waves are significantly simpler as they require less memory and operations per grid cell, and more significantly can be performed with coarser grids, both in space and time. In this paper, we present a procedure for correcting acoustic simulations for some of the effects of elasticity, at a ...

We present a new method for correcting the amplitudes of arrivals in an acoustic finite-difference simulation for elastic effects. In this method, we selectively compute an estimate of the error incurred when the acoustic wave equation is used to approximate the behavior of the elastic wave equation. This error estimate is used to generate an effective source field in a second acoustic simulation. The result of this second simulation is then applied as a correction to the original acoustic simulation. ...

Nanoparticle manipulation is of increasing interest, since they can report single molecule-level measurements of the cellular environment. Until now, however, intracellular nanoparticle locations have been essentially uncontrollable. Here we show that by infusing a gold ion solution, focused laser light-induced photoreduction allows in situ fabrication of gold nanoparticles at precise locations. The resulting particles are pure gold nanocrystals, distributed throughout the laser focus at sizes ranging ...

RNA molecules are involved in many pathways within the cell and their sequence composition, structure, conformational transitions and interactions with other molecules are all important factors in determining RNA function. Here we present a method for systematically and quantitatively determining characteristics of RNA using Raman spectroscopy. Abstract We show how Raman imaging can be combined with independent but simultaneous phase measurements of unlabeled cells, with the resulting data providing information on how the light is retarded and/or scattered by molecules in the cell. We then show, for the first time to our knowledge, how the chemistry of the cell highlighted in the Raman information is related to the cell quantitative phase information revealed in digital holographic microscopy by quantifying how the two sets of spatial information ...

In this study Raman spectroscopy has been used to monitor the changes in erythrocytes and plasma during Plasmodium infection in mice, following malaria disease progression over the course of 7 days. The Raman spectra of both samples are dominated by the spectra of hemoglobin and hemozoin, due to their resonant enhancement. In plasma samples, due to the inherently low heme background, heme-based changes in the Raman spectra could be detected in the very early stages of infection, as little as one ...

As such, nematodes have often been used as model organisms for the study of biological processes ...

Stand-off Raman spectroscopy, where the instrumentation is physically separated from the sample under investigation, can be extremely advantageous for analysis of dangerous, fragile or inaccessible samples. We first review common aspects of stand-off Raman instruments, including laser, optical lay-out, wavelength dispersion and detection, and how their characteristics can affect overall performance. We then provide an overview of applications of stand-off Raman spectroscopy in different fields, ...

Abstract Raman and Raman optical activity (ROA) spectroscopies are well suited to the study of ribonucleic acids (RNA) as they are both sensitive to a large amount of structural information and applicable to most RNAs and experimental conditions. As such, they can fill the current gap between high- and low-resolution techniques currently used by RNA biologists. In this study we illustrate the complementarity of Raman and ROA spectroscopies by their application to two functional RNAs, a 37 nucleotide ...

This study assesses whether a theoretical approach using the self-regulatory model (SRM) could usefully categorise chronic pain patients on the basis of their illness representations, since these have been shown to influence outcomes for other health-related conditions. One hundred and thirty newly referred patients of a pain relief clinic completed the revised Illness Perceptions ...
