Abstract Studies concerning nine pregnant women inadvertently inoculated with live rubella virus vaccine confirmed that the attenuated virus can produce chronic placental infection. None of the women had been tested for rubella susceptibility before vaccination; however, serologic testing of later serum specimens indicated seroconversion of one. This subject and one other reported symptoms consistent with vaccine-virus infection. In both women the attenuated virus was isolated from conceptuses collected ...

SUBSTANCE P (SP) modulates the activity of taste-responsive neurons in the gustatory zone of the nucleus of the solitary tract (NST) in the hamster. The distribution of the neurokinin-1 (NK1) receptor (i.e. the SP receptor) was mapped and compared with the distribution of SP immunoreactivity to identify the sites of ligand-receptor interactions. NK1-immunoreactive puncta and somata were located mostly in the rostral lateral, upper half of the rostral central and medial NST subnuclei. These subnuclei ...

This is a forceful meditation on the persistent disparity between the goal of racial equality in and the facts of discrimination. Presented as the prestigious Jefferson Lecture in the Humanities, Racial Equality in America traces America's history of racial inequality. In a strong critique of Thomas Jefferson, Franklin shows that this spokesman for democracy did not include African Americans among those created equal. Franklin chronicles the events of the 19th century that solidified inequality ...

This chapter addresses what is known about the endocrine system components growth hormone (GH)-insulin-like growth factor (IGF) axis, thyroid axis, and prolactin relative to exercise and exercise training. Each one of these hormone axes contributes to the maintenance of homeostasis in the body through impact on a multitude of physiological systems. The homeostatic disruption of exercise causes differing responses in each hormone axis. GH levels increase with sufficient stimulation, and IGFs are released ...

Habitual walking speed is a key functional outcome that has implications for knee biomechanics that occur during gait. Lower extremity biomechanics during walking affects the loading of the femoral cartilage. Ultrasonography (US) can be used to assess resting femoral cartilage thickness and acute cartilage deformation in response to walking. The purpose of this study was to determine the association between habitual walking speed and both resting femoral cartilage thickness and deformation. Twenty- ...

Purpose: To identify the causes of autosomal dominant retinitis pigmentosa (adRP) in a cohort of families without mutations in known adRP genes and consequently to characterize a novel dominant-acting missense mutation in SAG. Methods: Patients underwent ophthalmologic testing and were screened for mutations using targeted-capture and whole-exome next-generation sequencing. Confirmation and additional screening were done by Sanger sequencing. Haplotypes segregating with the mutation were determined ...
