Lichen planus (LP) is a papulosquamous dermatosis that involves the skin, scalp, nails and mucous membranes. Although its pathogenesis is still unknown, there is evidence that an imbalance of immunologic cellular reactivity plays an important role. Histopathologic examination reveals characteristic interface dermatitis. Dermoscopy is a non-invasive tool, useful in the assessment of inflammatory dermatoses, such as lichen planus. In this paper we describe the dermoscopic findings of different variants ...

Infections with hepatitis C virus, (HCV), hepatitis B virus (HBV), and human T lymphotropic type I/II (HTLV-I/II) virus are commonly found in patients infected with human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1). We conducted a seroepidemiologic study among 174 HIV-positive heterosexuals in Buenos Aires, Argentina in 1999. Evidence of exposure to HCV, HBV, and HTLV-I/II was found in 32%, 17%, and 5%, respectively. A higher prevalence of HBV infection was observed among males (33%) compared with females ( ...

Summary: This study determined the risk behaviors and viral subtypes of HIV-1 found in 134 heterosexual HIV-seroprevalent maternity patients, 41 of their sexual partners (men who have sex with women [MSW]), and 95 homosexual men (men who have sex with men [MSM]) from Buenos Aires, Argentina. Peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) were purified from blood and used for DNA extraction, amplification, and genotyping by the envelope heteroduplex mobility assay (env HMA). Most of the women had been infected ...

In modern nanotechnology one of the most exciting areas is the interaction between inorganic quantum dots and biological structures. For instance gold clusters surrounded by a shell of organic ligands covalently attach to proteins or other biological substances and can be used for labeling in structural biology. In the present report we show the possibility of using live plants for the fabrication of nanoparticles. Alfalfa plants were grown in an AuCl4 rich environment. The absorption of Au metal ...

Bismuth vanadate (BiVO4) is an attractive compound because of its visible light photocatalytic activity with a narrow energy gap of less than 2.4 eV. In addition, it has favorable band edge positions and is stable in an aqueous environment. Its photocatalytic activity can be translated for potential use for degradation of organic matter. To assess this activity, BiVO4 combined with graphene (N-G/BiVO4), silver (Ag/BiVO4), or both of them (N-G/Ag/BiVO4) were synthesized. These nanostructures (NSs) were ...

Subdermal contraceptive implants involve the delivery of a steroid progestin from polymer capsules or rods placed under the skin. The hormone diffuses out slowly at a stable rate, providing contraceptive effectiveness for 1–5 years. The period of protection depends upon the specific progestin and the type of polymer. Advantages of progestin implants include long term contraceptive action without requiring the user's or provider's attention, low dose of highly effective contraception without the ...

Bowenoid papulosis (BP) corresponds to an in situ squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) located in the anogenital region. It is related to HPV, and presents with gray-brown elevated papules or plaques. A biopsy is needed to confirm the diagnosis; however, dermoscopy may be useful to differentiate this disease from other conditions, such as genital warts, seborrheic keratosis and lichen planus. In this paper we describe the dermoscopic findings in two patients with this disease.

This paper analyzes the changes in the urban quality of life within the main metropolitan areas of the country over the last decade: Greater Santiago, Greater Valparaiso and Greater Concepcion. To this end, the Urban Quality of Life Index (UQLI) is applied to establish the possible patterns and trends that may shed light on the traces left by this metropolization process. Taking into account that two out of three people could live in the metropolitan areas of Chile during the next decade, and as ...

Introduction Abdominal compartment syndrome (ACS) is defined as a condition in which increased pressure is confined to the abdomen and is associated with a clinical picture involving hemodynamic, respiratory, and renal dysfunction. ACS occurs secondary to accumulation of fluid or gas, or both, in the abdominal cavity. It can have many different causes, including intra-abdominal bleeding after blunt and penetrating abdominal trauma, after abdominal packing for uncontrollable bleeding, and after aggressive ...

Oat (Avena sativa) biomass was studied as an alternative to recover Au(III) ions from aqueous solutions and for its capacity to reduce Au(III) to Au(0) forming Au nanoparticles. To study the binding trend of Au(III) to oat and the possible formation of Au nanoparticles, the biomass and a solution of Au(III) were reacted for a period of 1 h at pH values ranging from 2 to 6. The results demonstrated that Au(III) ions were bound to oat biomass in a pH-dependent manner, with the highest adsorption (about ...

The preparation and study of quantum dots and quantum wires play a very important role in nanotechnology. In this particular study, we report on the uptake of silver by living alfalfa plants. X-ray absorption spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) studies corroborated silver metal uptake by alfalfa plants from a silver-rich solid medium and the subsequent formation of silver nanoparticles. Silver nanoparticle alignment, structure, and coalescence were observed using TEM with an atomic ...

Summary: The presence of recombinant intersubtypes of HIV-1 in Argentina has been reported since the mid-1990s. In this study, sequences of a region of the gag, pol, and vpu genes of HIV-1 were analyzed in samples of 21 injection drug users (IDUs) residing in the suburbs of the city of Buenos Aires. Genomic characterization and identification of recombination sites were made comparing the 3 regions with reference isolation sequences of subtypes B, F, C, A, and B/F recombinants: CRF12_BF and non-CRF12_ ...

Asia is considered an important source of influenza A virus (IAV) pandemics, owing to large, diverse viral reservoirs in poultry and swine. However, the zoonotic origins of the 2009 A/H1N1 influenza pandemic virus (pdmH1N1) remain unclear, due to conflicting evidence from swine and humans. There is strong evidence that the first human outbreak of pdmH1N1 occurred in Mexico in early 2009. However, no related swine viruses have been detected in Mexico or any part of the Americas, and to date the most ...

Heavy metals from mining, smelting operations and other industrial processing facilities pollute wastewaters worldwide. Extraction of metals from industrial effluents has been widely studied due to the economic advantages and the relative ease of technical implementation. Consequently, the search for new and improved methodologies for the recovery of gold has increased. In this particular research, the use of cone hops biomass (Humulus lupulus) was investigated as a new option for gold recovery. ...

There is growing evidence that gut flora plays a role in the development of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). Abdominal bloating is a common symptom in these patients and the severity of this symptom could be related to the variations in their fermentative profiles, obtained by measuring the levels of breath hydrogen excretion after lactulose ingestion. Our objective was to determine the difference in abdominal bloating severity between IBS patients with high vs low levels of breath hydrogen excretion ...

Collision tumors consist of two different neoplasms occurring concurrently in the same lesion. This association has been described for both benign and malignant neoplasms that may be difficult to identify. Therefore, dermoscopy is a valuable tool to make a correct diagnosis. Chagas' disease or American trypanosomiasis is endemic throughout most parts of central and south America. As infection with HIV is increasing dramatically in areas endemic for Chagas' disease, it is possible that the presence of Trypanosoma cruzi in the gut can account for symptoms in T. cruzi/HIV-coinfected patients. In a cohort of 95 adult patients with AIDS who had been evaluated for chronic diarrhoea, stool samples were routinely examined for the presence of bacteria and parasites. Upper intestinal ...
