We present a systematic approach to decompose and incrementally build the proof of correctness of pipelined microprocessors. The central idea is to construct the abstraction function using completion functions, one per unfinished instruction, each of which specifies the effect (on the observables) of completing the instruction. In addition to avoiding term-size and case explosion problem that limits the pure flushing approach, our method helps localize errors, and also handles stages with iterative ...

The Completion Functions Approach was proposed in [9] as a systematic way to decompose the proof of correctness of pipelined microprocessors. The central idea is to construct the abstraction function using completion functions, one per unfinished instruction, each of which specifies the effect (on the observables) of completing the instruction. However, its applicability depends on the fact that the implementation “commits” the unfinished instructions in the pipeline in program order. In this paper, ...

The Completion Functions Approach was proposed in [HSG98] as a systematic way to decompose the proof of correctness of pipelined microprocessors. The central idea is to construct the abstraction function using completion functions, one per unfinished instruction, each of which specifies the effect (on the observables) of completing the instruction. In this paper, we show that this "instruction-centric" view of the completion functions approach leads to an elegant decomposition of the proof for an out- ...

The degree to which formal verification methods are adopted in practice depends on concrete demonstrations of their applicability on real-world examples. In this paper, we present our efforts in this regard involving a commercial high-speed split-transaction bus called the Runway. Modern busses such as the Runway deal with so many inter-twined and complex issues that successful application of formal method requires separation of concerns, and the use of the most appropriate tool for each concern. ...

The transaction ordering problem of the original PCI 2.1 standard bus specification violates the desired correctness property of maintaining the so called 'Producer/Consumer' relationship between writers and readers. In [3], a correction to this ordering problem was proposed and informally proved (called the "HP solution" here). In this paper, we present a formalization of the PCI 2.1 protocol in PVS. We formalize the fact that with Local Master ID added to the protocol no completion stealing is possible ...

An alternative method of maintaining carotid perfusion during combined carotid endarterectomy and off-pump coronary artery bypass grafting involves insertion of a cannula in the ascending aorta after a median sternotomy. This cannula is connected to a perfusion cannula, the distal end of which is inserted into the carotid artery beyond the carotid arteriotomy. This technique of aortico-carotid shunting and carotid perfusion was utilized in nine patients who underwent successful combined carotid ...

Early repair is recommended in type A aortic dissection repair, however, this is not often possible. The aim of this study was to assess the time delays, examine the effect of timing and malperfusion on outcomes, and identify other independent risk factors for mortality. This was a retrospective study on data collected prospectively. Primary outcome was 30-day mortality. Secondary outcome was adverse postoperative outcomes. All patients who arrived at the hospital with a type A aortic dissection, ...

Complete formal verification has thus far never been achieved for a state-of-the-art, high-performance commercial microprocessor. However, this article presents a completion functions methodology, based on theorem proving, that has been applied successfully to a large variety of example pipelined architectures.

Breast reconstruction is a common procedure after ablation of breast cancer in the western world and is slowly gaining acceptance in India. Of the reconstructive options, microsurgical reconstruction of the breast using deep inferior epigastric artery perforator flap is one of the commonly performed procedures.[1] The donor vessels for the flap are either the internal mammary artery or its perforator and the thoracodorsal vessels. The internal mammary perforator's size is not predictable also access ...
