Internal tissues of mature air‐dry seeds, prepared anhydrously for observation with the scanning electron microscope, exhibit cell wall structure which is different from that observed in aqueously fixed (hydrated) seed tissues. In a wide range of dry seeds observed (six members of the Cucurbitaceae, two species of Yucca, Hibiscus esculentus, Phaseolus vulgaris , and Helianthus annuus ) cell walls exhibit a unique collapsed structure. The manner of cell wall collapse is characteristic for a given species ...

Systemic administration of interleukin-2 and lymphokine-activated killer cells is a new approach to the immunotherapy of advanced cancer. Metastatic renal cell cancer is one of the histological types of tumors particularly susceptible to this treatment approach although renal toxicity often is a dose-limiting side effect. We compared the renal functional changes observed during interleukin-2 therapy in 52 consecutive patients with advanced renal cancer to that of 83 consecutive patients with metastatic ...

Existing code division multiple access (CDMA) systems, such as the IS-95 digital cellular system, support data and voice traffic at a basic rate as well as lower fractional rates. A backward-compatible system, known as multicode CDMA (MC-CDMA), has been proposed as a mechanism to allow higher-rate services under the IS-95 infrastructure. MC-CDMA enables dynamic packet-like user access with low overhead and high efficiency. This paper describes MC-CDMA and focuses on several issues related to its implementation, ...

Myosin V is a cellular motor protein, which transports cargos along actin filaments. It moves processively by 36-nm steps that require at least one of the two heads to be tightly bound to actin throughout the catalytic cycle. To elucidate the kinetic mechanism of processivity, we measured the rate of product release from the double-headed myosin V-HMM using a new ATP analogue, 3'-(7-diethylaminocoumarin-3-carbonylamino)-3'-deoxy-ATP (deac-aminoATP), which undergoes a 20-fold increase in fluorescence ...

We have used a new fluorescent ATP analogue, 3'-(7-diethylaminocoumarin-3-carbonylamino)-3'-deoxyadenosine-5'-triphosphate (deac-aminoATP), to study the ATP hydrolysis mechanism of the single headed myosinV-S1. Our study demonstrates that deac-aminoATP is an excellent substrate for these studies. Although the deac-amino nucleotides have a low quantum yield in free solution, there is a very large increase in fluorescence emission (∼20-fold) upon binding to the myosinV active site. The fluorescence emission ...

Transcatheter aortic-valve replacement (TAVR) is the recommended therapy for patients with severe aortic stenosis who are not suitable candidates for surgery. The outcomes beyond 1 year in such patients are not known. We randomly assigned patients to transfemoral TAVR or to standard therapy (which often included balloon aortic valvuloplasty). Data on 2-year outcomes were analyzed.A total of 358 patients underwent randomization at 21 centers. The rates of death at 2 years were 43.3% in the TAVR group ...
