Hubble Space Telescope (HST) and ground-based [O II] and [N II] images obtained in the period 1996-1999 reveal a complex, ionized optical nebula around the symbiotic binary CH Cyg extending out to 18'' or 5000 AU from the central stars. The observed velocity range of the nebula, derived from long-slit echelle spectra, is 130 km s-1. In spite of its complex appearance, the velocity data show that the basic morphology of the inner regions of the optical nebula is that of a bipolar outflow extending nearly ...

Muscular dystrophies (MDs) are a group of hereditary muscle disorders that include two particularly heterogeneous subgroups: limb-girdle MD and congenital MD, linked to 52 different genes (seven common to both subgroups). Massive parallel sequencing technology may avoid the usual stepwise gene-by-gene analysis. We report the whole-exome sequencing (WES) analysis of a patient with childhood-onset progressive MD, also presenting mental retardation and dilated cardiomyopathy. Conventional sequencing had ...

This study evaluated the effect of sterilization method on the bond strength of caries-affected dentin before artificial caries development and after restoration. Twelve bovine incisors were sectioned perpendicularly to their long axes at 7 mm from the amelodentinal junction. They were painted with acid-resistant nail varnish, except on an exposed coronal dentin area. Four groups were formed (n = 3) in accordance with the sterilization method used, before artificial caries development and after complete ...

Abstract Magnetic particles (MNPs) offer attractive possibilities in biotechnology. MNPs can get close to a target biological entity, as their controllable sizes range from a few nanometres up to tens of nanometres, and their surface can be modified to add affinity and specificity towards desired molecules. Additionally, they can be manipulated by an external magnetic field gradient. In this work, the study of ferric oxide (Fe 3 O 4 ) MNPs with different coating agents was conducted, particularly in ...

Three bio-inspired optimization schemes, integrated into a robust frequency domain 2-D finite-element code, have been assessed by the design of two novel nonintuitive photonic crystal-type devices: an unbalanced power splitter and a micro-to-nano waveguide coupler. The bio-inspired schemes were taken from three biological-based classes of algorithms: genetic algorithm, evolution strategy, and artificial immune system. The results show that such schemes constitute valuable and powerful tools for ...

Innovative solutions in the development of drug delivery systems targeting the nerve tissue are awaited. In this regard, a novel system for the delivery of drugs to the sciatic nerve was created using nanomedical principles.Chitosan was the vehicle material used in the experiment. Heparin bound to growth factors has been administered to enhance peripheral nerve regeneration, and since heparin possesses the appropriate charge to be able to form nanoparticles with chitosan, it appears to be a good ...

Photonics has been widely explored in computing and communications, mainly to rationalize the relationship between device size minimization and data processing/transmission maximization. Generally driven by optimization and modeling techniques, the design of photonic devices is often performed by bio-inspired algorithms integrated to electromagnetic solvers, which have achieved advances but is still time-consuming. As an alternative to a costly finite element method (FEM) solver, a multilayer perceptron ( ...

Success in soccer is much dependent on how players and teams create and restrict space and time. In match situations, players constitute small sub-groups to improve their collective synchronization and achievement of specific goals. This study aimed to identify changes in the effective playing space (EPS, defined as the smallest polygonal area delimited by the peripheral outfield players) when considering sub-groups of 3 to 10 players. Twenty outfield professional players participated in this study. ...

This work deals with the preparation of reduced graphene oxide (RGO)-TiO2 composites by a one-step hydrothermal treatment. The effect of the RGO loading on both the structural properties and photocatalytic behavior of RGO-TiO2 is deeply addressed herein. The hydrothermal treatment promoted the reduction of graphene oxide, crystallization of TiO2 into anatase, and anchoring of TiO2 nanoparticles on RGO sheets. It was observed that the prepared anatase particles showed sizes below 10 nm, whereas the ...

Buruli Ulcer (BU) is a cutaneous disease caused by Mycobacterium ulcerans. The pathogenesis of this disease is closely related to the secretion of the toxin mycolactone that induces extensive destruction of the skin and soft tissues. Currently, there are no effective measures to prevent the disease and, despite availability of antibiotherapy and surgical treatments, these therapeutic options are often associated with severe side effects. Therefore, it is important to develop alternative strategies ...

Abstract Caligus rogercresseyi , commonly known as sea louse, is an ectoparasite copepod that impacts the salmon aquaculture in Chile, causing losses of hundreds of million dollars per year. In this study, we report a chromosome-scale assembly of the sea louse ( C. rogercresseyi ) genome based on single-molecule real-time sequencing (SMRT) and proximity ligation (Hi-C) analysis.
