Amyopathic dermatomyositis is a rare condition. We describe the clinical and histopathologic findings of a 53-year-old woman who developed cutaneous lesions similar to those described in dermatomyositis after fibrate therapy for hypertriglyceridemia. Our patient fits the proposed criteria for amyopathic dermatomyositis, and after 8.5 years, muscular involvement has not been detected, although the dermatologic lesions are still present despite different treatments reported to treat this condition ( ...

A glycoconjugate constituted by the Streptococcus pneumoniae serotype 14 capsular polysaccharide (CPS14) and bovine serum albumin (BSA) was prepared, and the unique properties of Sephadex LH-20 were used to separate the conjugate from the unconjugated material. The strength of this approach consists in its capacity to produce pure polysaccharide–protein conjugate in good yield and free from unconjugated material, a common residual contaminant of this type of immunobiologicals. The CPS14–BSA conjugate ...

Peptide presentation by the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) is a key process for triggering a specific immune response. Studying peptide-MHC (pMHC) binding from a structural-based approach has potential for reducing the costs of investigation into vaccine development. This study involved using two semi-empirical quantum chemistry methods (PM7 and FMO-DFTB) for computing the binding energies of peptides bonded to HLA-DR1 and HLA-DR2. We found that key stabilising water molecules involved in the ...

Abstract. Understanding Earth system dynamics in light of ongoing human intervention and dependency remains a major scientific challenge. The unprecedented availability of data streams describing different facets of the Earth now offers fundamentally new avenues to address this quest. However, several practical hurdles, especially the lack of data interoperability, limit the joint potential of these data streams. Today, many initiatives within and beyond the Earth system sciences are exploring new ...

One of the major limitations in studying P. falciparum is that so far only asexual stages are amenable to rapid conditional genetic modification. The most promising drug targets and vaccine candidates, however, have been refractory to genetic modification because they are essential during the blood stage or for transmission in the mosquito vector. This leaves a major gap in our understanding of parasite proteins in most life cycle stages and hinders genetic validation of drug and vaccine targets. ...

Abstract The selective oxidation of ethylene to ethylene epoxide is highly challenging as a result of competing reaction pathways leading to the deep oxidation of both ethylene and ethylene oxide. Herein we present a novel catalyst based on silver and copper oxide with an excellent response in the selective oxidation pathway towards ethylene epoxide. The catalyst is composed of different silver nanostructures dispersed on a tubular copper oxide matrix. This type of hybrid nanoarchitecture seems ...

Abstract Background Central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO) is a common retinal vascular disorder with potentially complications: (1) persistent macular edema and (2) neovascular glaucoma. No safe treatment exists that promotes the return of lost vision. Eyes with CRVO may be predisposed to vitreous degeneration. It has been suggested that if the vitreous remains attached to the macula owing to a firm vitreomacular adhesion, the resultant vitreous traction can cause inflammation with retinal capillary ...

Despite the promises made by molecular evolutionists since the early 1960s that phylogenies would be readily reconstructed using molecular data, the construction of molecular phylogenies has both retained many methodological problems of the past and brought up new ones of considerable epistemic relevance. C-type lectins belong to a widely conserved family of lectins characterized in Metazoa. They show important functional diversity and immune implications, mainly as pathogen recognition receptors. In this work, C-type lectin-like proteins (CTLs) of a set of metazoan species were analyzed, revealing an important expansion in bivalve mollusks, which contrasted with the reduced repertoires of other mollusks, such as cephalopods. Orthology relationships demonstrated that these expanded repertoires consisted ...

This paper deals with Markov Control Processes (MCPs) on Euclidean spaces with an infinite horizon and a discounted total cost. Firstly, MCPs which result from the deterministic controlled systems will be analyzed. For such MCPs, conditions that permit to establish the equation known in the literature of Economy as Euler’s Equation (EE) will be given. There will be also presented an example of a Markov Control Process with deterministic controlled system where, to obtain the optimal value function, ...
