The carousel storage system is an automated storage/retrieval system; it has been widely used in a broad range of applications. This paper examines the throughput performance of the single/double carousel system in which a storage/retrieval machine performs pickup/discharge operations. As a job dispatch and control rule, it is assumed that the information on the rack location of the succeeding job orders is available, this assumption commonly holds in real-world operations. Based on a randomized ...

Most existing algorithms for structural learning of Bayesian networks are suitable for constructing small-sized networks which consist of several tens of nodes. In this paper, we present a novel approach to the efficient and relatively-precise induction of large-scale Bayesian networks with up to several hundreds of nodes. The approach is based on the concept of Markov blanket and makes use of the divide-and-conquer principle. The proposed method has been evaluated on two benchmark datasets and ...

There are many sources of systematic variations in cDNA microarray experiments which affect the measured gene expression levels. Print-tip lowess normalization is widely used in situations where dye biases can depend on spot overall intensity and/or spatial location within the array. However, print-tip lowess normalization performs poorly in situations where error variability for each gene is heterogeneous over intensity ranges. We first develop support vector machine quantile regression (SVMQR) ...

To understand the pathophysiology of dry eye disease (DED), it is necessary to characterize proteins in the ocular surface fluids, including tear fluid (TF) and lacrimal fluid (LF). There have been several reports of TF proteomes, but few proteomic studies have examined LF secreted from the lacrimal gland (LG). Therefore, we characterized the proteins constituting TF and LF by liquid chromatography mass spectrometry. TF and LF were collected from patients with non-Sjögren syndrome DED and from healthy ...

We developed an automatic algorithm to determine rapid eye movement (REM) sleep on the basis of the autonomic activities reflected in heart rate variations. The heart rate variability (HRV) parameters were calculated using the R-R intervals from an electrocardiogram (ECG). A major autonomic variation associated with the sleep cycle was extracted from a combination of the obtained parameters. REM sleep was determined with an adaptive threshold applied to the acquired feature. The algorithm was optimized ...

We developed an automatic slow-wave sleep (SWS) detection algorithm that can be applied to groups of healthy subjects and patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). This algorithm detected SWS based on autonomic activations derived from the heart rate variations of a single sensor. An autonomic stability, which is an SWS characteristic, was evaluated and quantified using R-R intervals from an electrocardiogram (ECG). The thresholds and the heuristic rule to determine SWS were designed based on the ...

In recent years, there has been a significant increase in strategies for the development of small intestine (and colon)-specific oral drug-delivery systems to maximize the efficiency of therapeutic agents and reduce side effects. However, only a few strategies are capable of working in the complicated environment of the human intestinal tract. In this study, the preparation of a basic pH/temperature-responsive co-polymer (p-NIVIm) and its in-vitro-drug delivery function in the pH range of 1–8 and ...

The realization of using lithium metal as an anode for secondary lithium batteries has been hindered by the formation of lithium dendrites during cycling, which can cause loss of active material, increased impedance, and even cell failure. In this study, lithium is coated onto a carbon cloth modified with lithiophilic ZnO coating. The Li/ZnO-coated carbon cloth is tested as a lithium metal anode and compared to lithium-metal foil. X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy examinations reveal ...

A biosensor is defined as a measuring system that includes a biological receptor unit with distinctive specificities toward target analytes. Such analytes include a wide range of biological origins such as DNAs of bacteria or viruses, or proteins generated from an immune system of infected or contaminated living organisms. They further include simple molecules such as glucose, ions, and vitamins. One of the major challenges in biosensor development is achieving efficient signal capture of biological ...

Intrauterine infection can exacerbate postnatal hyperoxic lung injury. We hypothesized that antenatal betamethasone treatment attenuates hyperoxic lung injury aggravated by intrauterine infection in neonatal rats. Newborn Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into eight experimental groups according to (i) whether rats were exposed to normoxia (N) or hyperoxia (H, 85% oxygen) from postnatal day (P)1 to P14, (ii) whether antenatal betamethasone (0.2 mg/dose) or vehicle was administered to pregnant rats at gestation ...

Many researchers have studied iris recognition techniques in unconstrained environments, where the probability of acquiring non-ideal iris images is very high due to off-angles, noise, blurring and occlusion by eyelashes, eyelids, glasses, and hair. Although there have been many iris segmentation methods, most focus primarily on the accurate detection with iris images which are captured in a closely controlled environment. This paper proposes a new iris segmentation method that can be used to accurately ...

Super-strong carbon nanotube (CNT) fibers are fabricated by infiltration of the mussel-inspired underwater adhesives, poly(ethylenimine)-catechols (PEI-Cs). PEI-C mimics the amino acid sequence of mussel adhesive proteins in which catechols from 3,4- dihydroxyl-L-phenylalanine and amines from lysine are found. Weak interactions between CNTs are overcome by heat-induced, metal-catalyzed chemical crosslinking of catechol. PEI-C’s strong and versatile adhesion results in high-strength CNT fibers.
