Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is the most common autoimmune disease affecting women of reproductive age and is associated with poor maternal and fetal outcomes. CD4+CD25+ Treg cells are a subset of T lymphocytes with potent immunosuppressive activity that play crucial roles in controlling immunological self tolerance. Evidence suggests that they are augmented in pregnancy, especially in the first trimester, suggesting an important role in early placental development. The literature describing ...

Clare Tower, Stephy Mathen, Ian Crocker, Ian N Bruce,

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a chronic multisystem autoimmune disorder that predominantly affects women of reproductive age. As clinical outcomes improve, pregnancy in these women is becoming more common. Although epidemiological data have documented an improvement in the prognosis of pregnancy in these women over recent years, they are still at significantly increased risk of pregnancy complications, such as miscarriage, stillbirth, pre-eclampsia and impaired foetal growth. The pathogenesis ...

Jennifer Crocker, Ian Schwartz,

Previous studies indicate that people who are low in self-esteem are more prejudiced (i.e., more negative about outgroups) than people who are high in self esteem. It is not clear from this research, however, whether low self-esteem individuals derogate outgroups relative to the ingroup (i.e., whether they show ingroup favoritism or ethnocentrism). In an experiment using the minimal intergroup situation paradigm, it was found that both high and low self-esteem subjects show ingroup favoritism, although ...

Mitochondria lack the ability to repair certain helix-distorting lesions that are induced at high levels in mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) by important environmental genotoxins and endogenous metabolites. These lesions are irreparable and persistent in the short term, but their long-term fate is unknown. We report that removal of such mtDNA damage is detectable by 48 h in Caenorhabditis elegans, and requires mitochondrial fusion, fission and autophagy, providing genetic evidence for a novel mtDNA damage ...

Ian Crocker, Nigel Lawson, Ian Daniels, Philip N. Baker, John Fletcher,

Pregnancy can exert suppressive effects on chronic inflammatory conditions. We have previously demonstrated a depression in polymorphonuclear leukocyte (PMN) respiratory burst during pregnancy which could explain this amelioration. To elucidate the biochemical mechanism, we have examined PMN phospholipase A2 (PLA2) activity and its relationship to cellular and circulating fatty acids in pregnant women (30 to 34 weeks) and nonpregnant controls. PMN PLA2 activity was determined by arachidonic acid (AA) ...

ABSTRACT Odd radio circles (ORCs) are recently-discovered faint diffuse circles of radio emission, of unknown cause, surrounding galaxies at moderate redshift (z ∼ 0.2 – 0.6). Here, we present detailed new MeerKAT radio images at 1284 MHz of the first ORC, originally discovered with the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder, with higher resolution (6 arcsec) and sensitivity (∼ 2.4 μJy/beam). In addition to the new images, which reveal a complex internal structure consisting of multiple arcs, we also ...

Gabriella E. Jardine, Anya J. Crocker, Ian Bailey, Matthew J. Cooper, James A. Milton, Paul A. Wilson,

Climate projections for the North American Southwest (NASW) predict an increasing frequency and duration of droughts over the 21st century in response to human-induced warming, with potentially severe economic and social consequences. The geological record provides a way to contextualise this prediction because of the past occurrence of abrupt hemispheric warming events and sustained intervals of atmospheric carbon dioxide loading equivalent to those projected for AD 2100 (between ∼500 and 900 ppmv). ...

Patton H. McGinley, Elizabeth K. Butker, Ian Crocker, Jerome C. Landry,

A new technique for stereotactic radiosurgery by use of a patient rotator is described. Using the rotator with a small collimated beam of 6 MV x-rays, a small well-defined region of the brain can be irradiated to a high dose with rapid fall off of the dose outside the target volume. Since the linear accelerator gantry does not move during therapy the possibility of a collision between the gantry and the patient or stereotactic equipment is eliminated. The system is also independent of the rotational ...
