Studies to define the effects of estrogens on immune function have yielded conflicting results. The recent demonstration that GPR30 can mediate rapid non-genomic events and may function as a novel transmembrane estrogen receptor could provide a mechanism underlying such findings. In this study, we have investigated the ability of GPR30 to regulate cell-surface expression of Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4), a key molecule in the perception of bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS) by immune cells. We show ...

A prospective study of activated protein C sensitivity, protein C, protein S, and other coagulation factors in 239 women during normal pregnancy was carried out. Protein C activity appeared unaffected by gestation, although an elevation of protein C activity was observed in the early puerperium. A fall in total and free protein S with increasing gestation was observed. Activated protein C sensitivity ratio (APC:SR) showed a progressive fall through pregnancy. This fall correlated with changes in ...

Objectives There is previous epidemiological evidence that intake of polyphenol-rich foods has been associated with reduced cardiovascular disease risk. We aimed to investigate the effect of increasing dietary polyphenol intake on microvascular function in hypertensive participants. Methods All participants completed a 4-week run-in phase, consuming <2 portions of fruit and vegetables (F&V) daily and avoiding berries and dark chocolate. Subjects were then randomised to continue with the low-polyphenol diet ...

Themba Mzilahowa, Philip J. McCall, Ian M. Hastings,
The population genetics and structure of P. falciparum determine the rate at which malaria evolves in response to interventions such as drugs and vaccines. This has been the source of considerable recent controversy, but here we demonstrate the organism to be essentially sexual, in an area of moderately high transmission in the Lower Shire Valley, Malawi. Seven thousand mosquitoes were collected and dissected, and genetic data were obtained on 190 oocysts from 56 infected midguts. The oocysts were ...

Abstract We investigated the prevalence of malaria and associated risk factors in children living in urban Ghana. Malaria prevalence was associated with low hemoglobin concentration, low socioeconomic status, and higher age. Our findings indicate that African urban poor are seriously affected by malaria and that irrigated agriculture may increase this risk.

This paper presents novel data collected over four weeks at Loe Bar, a fine gravel barrier (D50 = 3.5 mm), exposed to energetic wave conditions (Hs10% = 2.4 m). Combined remote and in-situ measurements were used to identify 3D morphological response, profile change and runup behaviour during successive energetic periods (Hs = 2.5 m). Small intertidal beach volume losses occurred under high steepness waves (H0/L0 > 0.01), but, in general, the overall beach volume was remarkably stable. In fact, the greatest ...

Whilst clinical deficiency of micronutrients is uncommon in the developed world, a suboptimal intake of certain micronutrients has been linked with an increased risk of chronic diseases such as CVD and cancer. Attention has therefore focused on increasing micronutrient status in order to theoretically reduce chronic disease risk. Increasing micronutrient status can involve a number of approaches: increasing dietary intake of micronutrient-rich foods; food fortification; use of supplements. Observational ...
