This paper presents a novel perspective on the interaction between equity and currency markets in emerging market economies (EMEs) by (i) examining the nonlinear effects of capital flows on return spillovers between the stock and currency markets in a sample of twelve EMEs via quantile causality tests that capture the quantile specific interactions, and (ii) providing a comparative analysis of the influence of debt versus equity flows over the spillover patterns. We show that the causal effects of ...

In order to study the lack of acidity in wines made out of cv. Negrette, a problem partially due to a high potassium content, this cultivar was grafted onto three different rootstocks, which were then grown in a nutrient solution. Although cation nutrition varied as a function of the rootstock, the potassium level was high in leaves of all three rootstocks. Rootstock 3309 C induced the lowest potassium level. Furthermore, in combination with Negrette, SO 4 absorbed potassium more readily than 101- ...

During the COVID-19 pandemic, intensive care units (ICU) introduced restrictions to in-person family visiting to safeguard patients, healthcare personnel, and visitors. We conducted a web-based survey (March–July 2021) investigating ICU visiting practices before the pandemic, at peak COVID-19 ICU admissions, and at the time of survey response. We sought data on visiting policies and communication modes including use of virtual visiting (videoconferencing). We obtained 667 valid responses representing ...

Melatonin, a widespread substance with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, has been found to act as an antidiabetic agent in animal models, regulating the release and action of insulin. However, the molecular bases of this antidiabetic action are unknown, limiting its application in humans. Several studies have recently shown that melatonin can modify calcium (Ca(2+)) in diabetic animals, and Ca(2+) has been reported to be involved in glucose homeostasis. The objective of the present study ...

Sputtering of silicon in a Helium magnetron discharge has been reported as a bottom-up procedure to obtain amorphous Si films containing high amounts of gas-filled nanopores. Here we compare the microstructure and composition of Si–He nanocomposite films deposited by magnetron sputtering (MS) with 4He in DC or RF and 3He in RF operation modes. Electron microscopy (SEM and TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and ion beam analysis (IBA) have been used to analyze the films and to investigate the in-situ and ...

Tomato is one of the major economically domesticated crops, and it is extensively used in different ways and purposes worldwide. Cell metabolism is the central core of all the biological processes to sustain life including cell growth, differentiation, maintenance, and response to environmental stress. To evaluate how genetic engineering can improve tomato fruit metabolome, the transcriptomic and metabolomic datasets of two transgenic tomatoes (SlMX1 overexpression and RNAi lines) have been compared ...

Deven Bathia, Rıza Demirer, Román Ferrer, Ibrahim D. Raheem,

This paper presents a novel perspective on the interaction between equity and currency markets in emerging market economies (EMEs) by (i) examining the nonlinear effects of capital flows on return spillovers between the stock and currency markets in a sample of twelve EMEs via the causality-in-quantiles approach of Balcilar et al., (2016), and (ii) providing a comparative analysis of the influence of debt versus equity flows over the spillover patterns. We show that the causal effects of international ...

Amyloid diseases are global epidemics with no cure available. Herein, we report a first demonstration of in vivo mitigation of amyloidogenesis using biomimetic nanotechnology. Specifically, the amyloid fragments (ba) of β-lactoglobulin, a whey protein, were deposited onto the surfaces of carbon nanotubes (baCNT), which subsequently sequestered human islet amyloid polypeptide (IAPP) through functional-pathogenic double-protein coronae. Conformational changes at the ba–IAPP interface were studied by ...

The cultivar was found to have high potassium content in leaves, musts and wines. To study the contribution of rootstock to this problem, Negrette was grafted onto 101-14 Mgt, 3309 C and SO 4 and grown in the same nutrient solution. The Negrette/3309 combination produced wines with the highest total acidity and tartaric acid content. This graft combination seems to be the best suited to increase the acidity of the must and wine of Negrette.

Abstract Novel agents targeting the B-cell receptor signaling pathway, such as ibrutinib and idelalisib, are effective in patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), but complete responses are infrequent and residual disease often remains. Patients may discontinue ibrutinib because of unacceptable adverse events or if they develop ibrutinib resistance due to Bruton tyrosine kinase (BTK) or phospholipase C gamma 2 (PLCG2) mutations or other less-well-defined mechanisms. Therefore, alternative ...

Bruton's tyrosine kinases inhibitors (BTKis) represent major advances in CLL therapy. However resistance to this form of therapy is emerging, and such patients often progress more rapidly. Hence there is an important need for therapies that address resistance. Microenvironmental input like IL-4 is critical for CLL disease progression. Compared with normal B cells, CLL cells exhibit significantly higher levels of surface membrane (sm) IL-4 receptor (IL4-R) and contain increased amounts of pSTAT6, a ...

The cytobrush is considered the method of choice to obtain endometrial samples. Rigid brush fibers, however, may induce endometrial irritation and bleeding, or cell fragmentation, decreasing quality and diagnostic value of the samples. It was hypothesized that samples collected using a novel cytotape would provide sample smears of greater quality and less blood contamination than the cytobrush. Endometrial samples were collected with a cytotape and a cytobrush from ten mares without endometritis. ...

Background Adenosine triphosphate (ATP)-sensitive potassium cardiac channels consist of inward-rectifying channel subunits Kir6.1 or Kir6.2 (encoded by KCNJ8 or KCNJ11) and the sulfonylurea receptor subunits SUR2A (encoded by ABCC9). Objective To examine the association of mutations in KCNJ8 with Brugada syndrome (BrS) and early repolarization syndrome (ERS) and to elucidate the mechanism underlying the gain of function of ATP-sensitive potassium channel current. Methods Direct sequencing of KCNJ8 and ...

Abstract Background Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) causes about 10% of cases of end stage renal disease. Disease progression rate is heterogeneous. Tolvaptan is presently the only specific therapeutic option to slow kidney function decline in adults at risk of rapidly progressing ADPKD with chronic kidney disease (CKD) stages 1–4. Thus, a reliable evaluation of kidney function in patients with ADPKD is needed. Methods We evaluated the agreement between measured (mGFR) and estimated ...
