Reproduction, embryonic development, and general biology are described from more than 100 chain dogfish, Scyliorhinus retifer, a common catshark found on the continental slopes of the western North Atlantic. Females and males reached sexual maturity at about 520 mm TL and 500 mm TL, respectively. Follicles are ovulated in pairs when they reach 18 mm diameter. In the laboratory, females lay one egg pair at approx. 15.3 d intervals, attaching the eggs to bottom structures. Development at 11.7-12.8 ...

Esophageal cancer is the fourth most common neoplasm of the gastrointestinal tract. It is responsible for 1.7% of all deaths related with cancer. The two main types of esophageal cancer are squamous cell carcinoma and adenocarcinoma. Other types of esophageal cancer are uncommon. We present a 57-year-old man admitted to the hospital with nausea and vomiting due to a high-grade malignant mixed adenoneuroendocrine carcinoma of the gastroesophageal junction. The patient underwent Ivor-Lewis esophagectomy ...

We have synthesized a novel family of metal–organic chains based on 4-nitro-1H-pyrazole linker and zinc as metal center. We report the formation of these coordination polymers using hydrothermal routes with water as solvent. These materials display one-dimensional structures with major structural modifications from minimal synthetic variations. What is more interesting, we have carried out antitumor measurements, and we have related these properties with the structural networks. To the best of our ...

Thermoplastic starch/polyvinyl alcohol (TPS/PVA) films have limitations for being used in long-term applications due to starch retrogradation. This leads to plasticizer migration, especially when low molecular weight plasticizers such as glycerol, are used. In this work, we employed mixtures of oligomers based on glycerol citrates with higher molecular weight than glycerol as plasticizers for potato-based TPS/PVA blends obtained by melt-mixing. This constitutes an alternative to reduce plasticizer ...

Abstract An iron(II) phthalocyanine (FePc) complex solubilized by decylamine (DA) and benzylamine (BA) is incorporated into a nanoparticulate metal oxide matrix to develop optical sensor films sensitive to NO 2 and CO. Eleven amine solvents have been tested as N ‐donor ligands that permit ligand exchange with the gas molecules. We have systematically investigated the suitability of different N ‐donor ligands, studied the thermal stability of the NO 2 ‐ and CO‐sensing films at 4, 25, 60, and 80 °C by photometry, ...

A novel europium(III) membrane luminescence sensor based on a tridentate bis(phosphinic amide)-phosphine oxide, PhPO(C(6)H(4)POPhN(CH(CH(3))(2))(2))(2) (1), is described. The new luminescent complex, [Eu(1)(2)]Cl(3)2, which is formed between europium(III) and ligand 1 and has a 1 : 2 stoichiometry, has been evaluated in solution. It has the excellent spectroscopic and chemical characteristics that make it appropriate for sensing film applications. All the parameters (polymer, plasticizer, ligand and ...

The emissivity of three Ni and Co based aeronautical alloys is analyzed in this paper. These alloys are employed in high temperature environments whenever good corrosion resistance, high temperature resistance and high strength are essential. Thus, apart from the aeronautical industry, these alloys are also used in other technological applications, as for example, aerospace, nuclear reactors, and tooling. The results in this paper extend the emissivity data for these alloys available in the literature. ...

A combination of FTIR- and NMR-based metabolomics approaches coupled to multivariate data analysis techniques was used for the first time to characterize and explore the metabolic changes along the ripening of two Spanish melon landraces (Jimbee N and Jimbee XL). Furthermore, the fatty acids profile and the antioxidant capacity were investigated by GC-FID and ORAC method, respectively. NMR offers the unique potential to holistically screen hundreds of metabolites and has already proved to be a powerful technique able to provide a global picture of a wide range of metabolic processes underlying complex and multifactorial diseases, such as neurodegenerative and neurodevelopmental diseases. The aim of this study was to apply an NMR-based metabolomics approach to explore brain metabolic changes in both male and female rats induced by prenatal exposure to two chemicals associated with ...
