The quenching of triplet-excited 3C60 by electron acceptors TCNQ and TCNE has been established in nonpolar toluene and moderately polar benzonitrile solutions. The quenching constants kq are 5.5 × 109 in toluene, 2.2 × 109 in benzonitrile for TCNQ and 7.9 × 105 in toluene, 4.2 × 108 (M s)−1 in benzonitrile for TCNE. The 3C60 quenching can be explained by triplet exciplex formation. The time-resolved spectra of the C60/TCNE system exhibit a well pronounced charge-transfer excited state [Cδ60 … TCNEδ−] in benzonitrile.

The picosecond transient absorption spectrum of C60 in toluene was obtained in the region 420-1100 nm and a new transient absorption band near 1000 nm was discovered. This band was attributed to the S1—Sx transition, probably between configurations (hu)9(t1g)1 ← (hu)9(t1u)1. The intersystem crossing time τ= 830±190 ps was estimated from the S1—Sx absorption decay and from the creation of the T1-Tx absorption band.

Passive Q-switched mode locking of a 2.09 microm flashlamp-pumped Cr(3+),Tm(3+),Ho(3+):Y(3)Sc(2)Al(3)O(12) laser by use of a phosphate glass doped with PbS quantum dots of 5 nm in radius was demonstrated. Mode-locked pulses of 290 ps in duration and up to 0.5 mJ in energy were registered.

Q switching of a diode-pumped Nd3+:KGd(WO4)2 laser at 1.35 microm by use of cobalt-doped magnesium- and zinc-aluminosilicate glass ceramics as saturable absorbers is demonstrated. Q-switching efficiency up to 40% has been obtained. Ground-state absorption cross sections for Co2+ ions at the wavelengths of 1.35 and 1.54 microm are estimated to be (3.5-4.0) x 10(-19) cm2. A new saturable absorber Q switch for 1.54-mum Er:glass lasers is presented. The saturable absorber is a transparent glass ceramic that contains magnesium-aluminum spinel nanocrystallites doped with tetrahedrally coordinated Co(2+) ions. By using a PbS-doped phosphate glass as an intracavity saturable absorber, we achieved passive Q switching of a 1.54-µm Er:Yb:glass laser. We obtained Q-switched pulses with 110-ns duration and 0.2-mJ energy. The saturation intensity at 1.54 µm was estimated to be ∼60 kW/cm2.

Passive Q switching of a diode-pumped Nd(3+):KGd(WO(4))(2) laser is demonstrated by use of Cr(4+):SrGd(4)(SiO(4))(3)O and Cr(4+):CaGd(4)(SiO(4))(3)O crystals as saturable absorbers. An average output power of 40 mW was obtained with a pulse repetition rate of ~0.4 MHz.
