High-field asymmetric waveform ion mobility spectrometry (FAIMS) separates ions by utilizing the mobility differences of ions at high and low fields. The shape of the waveform is one of the essential features affecting the resolution, transmission, and separation of FAIMS. Due to practical circuitry advantages, sinusoidal asymmetric waveforms are typically used in FAIMS, whereas theoretical studies indicate that square asymmetric waveforms improve ion separation, resolution, and sensitivity. Results ...

We present a new non-invasive method for assessing hemostasis in vivo. This method is based on the analysis of the movement characteristics of red blood cells (RBCs) during blood stasis condition. Stasis is intermittently induced by occlusion of arterial blood flow at the finger root. We assumed that under zero flow conditions, RBC movement is driven mostly by Brownian motion, and we characterized the RBC movement by utilizing the dynamic light scattering (DLS) technique in vivo. We found that during ...

Amyloid β 25-35 (Aβ 25-35 ) represents a neurotoxic fragment of Aβ 1 - 40 or Aβ 1 - 42 , and is implicated in the progressive neurodegeneration in cases of the Alzheimer disease (AD). Amyloid β 25-35 was shown to lyse rat erythrocytes (RBCs) of all ages, and the extent of the RBC toxicity is directly correlated with Aβ 25-35 concentration and cell age. Activities of glycolytic, antioxidant, and Na + /K + -adenosine triphosphatase (ATPase) enzymes, in vivo, are significantly decreased in older RBCs as compared to ...

It is widely recognized that effective stress management could have a dramatic impact on health care and preventive medicine. In order to meet this need, efficient and seamless sensing and analytic tools for the non-invasive stress monitoring during daily life are required. The existing sensors still do not meet the needs in terms of specificity and robustness. We utilized a miniaturized dynamic light scattering sensor (mDLS) which is specially adjusted to measure skin blood flow fluctuations and ...

Pulse oximetry is one of the most widely used techniques in modern medicine. In pulse oximetry, photoplethysmography (PPG) signals are measured at two different wavelengths and converted into the parameter Gamma, which is used to calculate the oxygen saturation of arterial blood. Although most pulse oximetry sensors are based on transmission geometry, the reflection mode is required for different form factors such as the forehead or wrists. In reflection oximetry, local pressure is applied to the ...

This article discusses the origin of PPG signals. Two plausible hypotheses are analyzed: the volumetric hypothesis and a model wherein the PPG is driven by the RBC aggregation process. To verify the model predictions, the PPG signals at the fingertip were measured. External pressure was applied to the fingertip, presumably reducing the blood flow. The results expressed in terms of gamma, used in pulse-oximetry, agree with the aggregation model. In addition, the oscillometric signal and the PPG signal ...

The physiological characteristics of skin blood flow can be described in terms of the hemodynamic indices (HI). The HI is derived from the laser speckle characteristics, which are governed by the cutaneous blood flow. A miniaturized dynamic light-scattering sensor was used to measure the speckle pattern from the finger root. Three groups of subjects from 15 to 25 years of age were tested. The first group included subjects who are actively engaged in sport activities; the second group included subjects ...

Epigenetic studies of DNA and histone modifications represent a new and important activity in molecular investigations of human disease. Our previous epigenome-wide scan identified numerous DNA methylation differences in post-mortem brain samples from individuals affected with major psychosis. In this article, we present the results of fine mapping DNA methylation differences at the human leukocyte antigen (HLA) complex group 9 gene (HCG9) in bipolar disorder (BPD). Optical spectroscopy approach, using non-coherent light sources, has become an important tool for non-invasive analysis in vivo. It is based on the assumption that biochemical characteristics of biological system can be determined through the optical coefficients of blood and tissue particles. Thus, in the framework of this approach, the major concern is to express the obtained optical signals in terms the optical coefficients of the single particle of blood or tissue. However, since the light propagation ...

The tendency of red blood cells (RBCs) to aggregate is considered to be a critical biological activity, which contributes to blood viscosity. The ability to assess blood viscosity parameters non-invasively can play an important role in a variety of fields of medicine. Toward achieving this goal, we have attempted to follow the kinetics of red blood cell's aggregation process non-invasively. In this work, we have generated the optical signals of RBC aggregation and have studied them both in vitro ...
