Vascular calcification (VC) is a frequent condition in chronic kidney disease (CKD) and a well-established risk factor for the development of cardiovascular disease (CVD). Gut dysbiosis may contribute to CVD and inflammation in CKD patients. Nonetheless, the role of gut and blood microbiomes in CKD-associated VC remains unknown. Therefore, this pilot study aimed to explore the link between gut and blood microbiomes and VC in CKD patients on peritoneal dialysis (CKD-PD). Our results showed relative changes ...

Background Intermittent hypobaric-hypoxia (IHH) and endurance-training (ET) are cardioprotective strategies against stress-stimuli. Mitochondrial modulation appears to be an important step of the process. This study aimed to analyze whether a combination of these approaches provides additive or synergistic effects improving heart-mitochondrial and cardiac-function. Methods Two-sets of rats were divided into normoxic-sedentary (NS), normoxic-exercised (NE, 1 h/day/5 weeks treadmill-running), hypoxic- ...

Epidermal growth factor (EGF) and its receptor play critical roles in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) carcinogenesis. A functional polymorphism in the EGF gene has been linked to increased cancer susceptibility. This study aimed to evaluate the role of the EGF +61A/G polymorphism as risk factors in NSCLC patients. For the present case-control study, we analyzed 112 NSCLC and 126 cancer-free controls from Portugal. Following DNA isolation from peripheral blood, EGF +61A/G polymorphism was assessed ...

The Edinburgh Handedness Inventory (EHI) is persistently the most used inventory to evaluate handedness, being neuropsychological investigation and clinical practice. Despite this, there is no information on how this instrument functions in a Portuguese population. The objective of this study was therefore to examine the sociodemographic influences on handedness and establish psychometric properties of the EHI in a Portuguese sample. The sample consisted of 342 adults (157 men and 185 women), assessed ...

The results of an ongoing study of soil improvement using pyrite-rich waste from the Neves-Corvo copper mine as an amendment, are reported for an area in southern Portugal. The application of pyrite to the calcareous soils resulted in the increased availability of certain trace elements, an increase in nutritive parameters, and an increase in dry matter production. This application does not appear to lead to pollution problems in surface waters or toxicological problems in grazing animals.

Lymphocyte-activation gene-3 (LAG-3), an immune checkpoint receptor, negatively regulates T-cell function and facilitates immune escape of tumors. Dual inhibition of LAG-3 and programmed cell death receptor-1 (PD-1) significantly improved progression-free survival (PFS) in metastatic melanoma patients compared to anti-PD-1 therapy alone. Investigating the utility of LAG-3 expression as a biomarker of response to anti-LAG-3 + anti-PD-1 immunotherapy is of great clinical relevance. This study sought to ...

However, 48% of anti-PD-1-treated patients will develop recurrent disease within 4 years. How targeted therapies and immunotherapies shape tumors, and thereby influence subsequent therapeutic responses, is poorly understood. In the present study, we show, in melanoma patients and mouse models, that when tumors relapse after targeted therapy with MAPK pathway inhibitors, they are cross-resistant to immunotherapies, despite the different modes of action of these therapies. We find that cross-resistance is mediated by a cancer cell–instructed, immunosuppressive tumor microenvironment that ...
