Anthropometric and cephalometric orbital measurements were compared in 63 North American Caucasian patients (24 males, 39 females) aged 3 to 29 years who had 13 craniofacial syndromes involving hypertelorism. The hypertelorism, which was diagnosed anthropometrically, was mild in 11 patients, moderate in 25 and severe in 27. The surface intercanthal width was larger than the bony interorbital distance in all patients (mean 12.2 mm). The differences were smaller in mild cases and larger in severe cases. ...

Calcitonin was administered to kittens for periods of 5–10 days; thereafter serial determinations of the serum calcium and phosphorus were made. Subsequently, groups of animals were nephrectomized or thy ropara thyroidectomized; the response to calcitonin was then measured. Calcitonin produced hypocalcemia and hypophosphatemia initially; resistance to the hypocalcemic effect soon developed and was associated with an increasing hypophosphatemic response. The hypophosphatemic response to calcitonin ...

Fatness and fat patterning were studied in a sample of 502 youth, 12-17 years of age, of high and low socioeconomic status (SES) from the Chandigarh Zone of northwest India. Fatness estimates were based on six skinfolds, while fat patterning was analyzed through the centripetal fat and waist/hip ratios, and through principal components of skinfolds. In all analyses, fat patterns were adjusted for general body fatness. Upper SES subjects were larger and fatter than lower SES subjects of the same age ...

Abstract Guiding neuronal migration and outgrowth has great importance for therapeutic applications and for bioelectronics interfaces. Many efforts have been devoted to the development of tools to form predesigned structured neuronal networks. Here, a unique approach to localize cell bodies and direct neurite outgrowth is described based on local magnetic manipulations. Inspired by spintronic devices, a multi‐layer deposition process is developed to generate nanometric‐thick films with perpendicular ...

Abstract Subcutaneous fatness, measured anthropometrically, was analyzed in a sample of 651 males and females, 18–49 years of age, of high and low socioeconomic status (SES) from the Chandigarh zone of Northwest India. There were significant differences between lower and upper SES males and females. In general, all groups tend to show increases in indicators of fatness between the 18–29 and the 30–39 year age groups. However, there was less consistency across groups between 30–39 and 40–49 years. ...

SummaryFat patterns were derived from principal-component analysis of skinfolds and circumferences of 651 northwest Indian adults 18–49 years of age of high and low socioeconomic class. All measurements were corrected for absolute size prior to the analysis. As described in other ethnic groups, two patterns emerged: trunk/extremity and upper/lower body, based upon skinfolds and circumferences respectively. There was a general trend towards increases with age in upper body trunk fatness, somewhat ...

The accuracy of quantitative pulse-volume measurement with a calibrated electrical impedance plethysmograph was determined on a laboratory limb-segment model. Changes in electrical impedance detected via a tetraprolar electode configuration were related to pulse-volume changes by the parallel-impedance model described by Nyboer et al. (The Impedance Plethysmograph: An Electrical Volume Recorder. Natl. Res. Council, Comm. Aviation Med. 149, 1943). The instrument employed in this study calculated pulse ...

A simple method to fabricate dome-shaped particles of various materials, with different sizes and compositions, is presented. This versatility enables us to engineer multifunctional particles with the desired properties for specific biological applications.

During the summer of 2006, license plate data on morning peak-hour commuters were collected to assist with the creation of a potential participant pool for the congestion pricing phase of the Commute Atlanta (Atlanta, Georgia) instrumented-vehicle study. The Commute Atlanta study needed to identify census block groups with the highest probability of yielding study participants eligible for recruitment. Approximately 17,000 unique vehicle registration addresses in a six-county area were obtained from ...

Confocal microscopy is widely used for three-dimensional (3D) sample reconstructions. Arguably, the most significant challenge in such reconstructions is posed by the resolution along the optical axis being significantly lower than in the lateral directions. In addition, the imaging rate is lower along the optical axis in most confocal architectures, prohibiting reliable 3D reconstruction of dynamic samples. Here, we demonstrate a very simple, cheap, and generic method of multiangle microscopy, allowing ...

The ability to control neuronal mobility and organization is of great importance in developing neuronal interfaces and novel therapeutic approaches. An emerging promising method is the manipulation of neuronal cells from afar via magnetic forces. Nevertheless, using magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles as internal actuators may lead to biotoxicity, adverse influence on intracellular processes, and thus requires prerequisite considerations for therapeutic approaches. Magnetizing the cells via the incorporation ...

The ability to direct neurons into organized neural networks has great implications for regenerative medicine, tissue engineering, and bio-interfacing. Many studies have aimed at directing neurons using chemical and topographical cues. However, reports of organizational control on a micron-scale over large areas are scarce. Here, an effective method has been described for placing neurons in preset sites and guiding neuronal outgrowth with micron-scale resolution, using magnetic platforms embedded ...
