Literature and photography have been crossing borders since Poe praised the daguerreotype's invention in 1840. This anthology investigates books that juxtapose photographs and written language, considering various genres and nationalities. The anthology also expands critical inquiry by drawing from gender theories, psychoanalysis, Marxism, poststructuralism, and cultural studies.

The objective of this article is to investigate learning in museums through the lens of John Dewey’s philosophy of education and experiential learning. The influence of Dewey’s philosophy of education is widespread and resounding. In this article, I examine the experiential qualities of Dewey’s philosophy and compare it with the objectives of the museum educational experience, explaining the relevance to adult education. There can be no doubt that museums are unique arenas for learning, made rich ...

We propose a finite element method for approximating the nonlinear equations describing the electromagnetic field in a ferromagnetic material. Using energy arguments, we prove an optimal convergence rate for the method assuming a sufficiently smooth electromagnetic field. We also verify that the finite element solution satisfies various conservation conditions appropriate to the continuous problem. Finally, we provide some numerical examples.

The transmission eigenvalue problem plays a critical role in the theory of qualitative methods for inhomogeneous media in inverse scattering theory. Efficient computational tools for transmission eigenvalues are needed to motivate improvements to theory, and, more importantly, are parts of inverse algorithms for estimating material properties. In this paper, we propose two finite element methods to compute a few lowest Maxwell's transmission eigenvalues which are of interest in applications. Since ...

The use of finite elements to discretize the time dependent Maxwell equations on a bounded domain in three-dimensional space is analyzed. Energy norm error estimates are provided when general finite element methods are used to discretize the equations in space. In addition, it is shown that if some curl conforming elements due to Nédélec are used, error estimates may also be proved in the $L^2 $ norm.

Three mixed finite-element methods for approximating Maxwell's equations are compared. A dispersion analysis provides a Courant–Friedrichs–Lewy (CFL) bound that is necessary for convergence when a uniform mesh is used. The dispersion analysis also allows a comparison of the stability properties of the methods. Superconvergence at the interpolation points is proved for uniform grids, and demonstrated by three numerical examples. All three methods are shown to be able to handle discontinuous media ...

A semidiscrete mixed finite element approximation to the time dependent Maxwell's equations on a bounded smooth domain is analyzed. A variational problem for the electric and magnetic fields in which the boundary conditions are enforced naturally is derived. Then a general convergence result for mixed methods is proven, and it is shown how this result may be used to prove various error estimates when Nédélec's curl conforming finite elements are used.

This paper is concerned with the derivation of a priori and a posteriori error bounds for a class of linear functionals arising in electromagnetics which represent the far-field pattern of the scattered electromagnetic field. The a posteriori error bound is implemented into an adaptive finite element algorithm, and a series of numerical experiments is presented.
