Francis Birch, Inge Lehman,

Inge Lehman's career in seismology began in 1925 when she became assistant to Professor Norlund in Copenhagen. She was responsible for the establishment of a seismic network of large aperture with stations in Copenhagen, Ivigtut, and Scoresby Sound. When the Royal Danish Geodetic Institute was created in 1928, she became Chief of the Seismological Department and served in this capacity until she retired in 1952. During these years she read all the records and published the bulletins for these stations; ...

... and I lost a treasured friend. I met Inge Lehmann in the 1950s when she came to Lamont to work on her “Lg” paper. We immediately became friends despite the large difference in our ages. Her quiet dignity, her interest in everything scientific and feminine, her desire to learn all she could about our lives in and out of the observatory astounded me. Inge was shy, almost painfully so. Dr. Ewing arranged ...

Sleep was analysed in 8 young adult subjects during two baseline nights and two recovery nights following 40.5 h sleep deprivation. Sleep stages were scored from the polygraph records according to conventional criteria. In addition, the EEG records of the entire nights were subjected to spectral analysis to compute the frequency distribution of the power density in the 0.25–25 Hz range for 0.5 Hz or 1.0 Hz bins. In the first recovery night, the power density in the delta band was significantly higher ...

All-night spectral analysis of the sleep EEG was used to study the effect and after-effect of a single bedtime dose of flunitrazepam (2 mg), flurazepam (30 mg) or triazolam (0.5 mg) in healthy young males. In the night of drug treatment all 3 hypnotics reduced the EEG slow waves and enhanced the activity in the frequency range of sleep spindles. In the subsequent drug-free night, the latter changes were no longer present after triazolam, whereas the reduction of slow wave activity persisted after all ...

Manifestations of experimentally induced altered states of consciousness in the brain's electrical activity as well as in subjective experience were explored via the hypnagogic state at sleep onset, and the state induced by exposure to an unstructured perceptual field (ganzfeld). Twelve female paid volunteers participated in sessions involving sleep onset, ganzfeld, and eyes-closed relaxed waking, and were repeatedly prompted for recall of their momentary mentation, according to a predefined schedule. ...

From a classical point of view, gastric motility acts to clear the stomach between meals, whereas postprandial motility acts to provide a reservoir for food, mixing and grinding the food and to assure a controlled flow of food to the intestines. To summarise findings that support the role of gastric motility as a central mediator of hunger, satiation and satiety.A literature review using the search terms 'satiety', 'satiation' and 'food intake' was combined with specific terms corresponding to the sequence ...
