In this paper, we examine how the attributes of female and racial minority directors differ from those of white males. We track a sample of white male, white female, African-American female and African-American male directors who serve on Fortune 1000 boards and find differences in occupational background, education, and patterns of board affiliation. Female and African-American directors are more likely to come from non-business backgrounds, are more likely to hold advanced degrees, and join multiple ...

ABSTRACT Overboarded directors (i.e., those serving on too many boards) have come under recent attack. The accusation is that such directors are ‘stretched’ by several directorships and therefore cannot fulfil their governance responsibility. This study investigates the impact of overboarded directors upon key strategic decisions such as corporate acquisitions. Based on our examination of acquisition outcomes, we found that such directors are important sources of knowledge and enhance acquisition ...

The relative importance of strategy and structure lies at the heart of the strategic management field, yet little is known about the associated performance implications of such changes. The purpose of this study was to investigate the financial performance impact of strategy and structure changes. We conducted an examination of 259 firms over a 36‐year period using a quasi‐experimental design. No significant change–performance relationships were found for tandem changes (i.e. when both strategy and ...

Abstract Hypothesis testing is one of the most common types of data analysis and forms the backbone of scientific research in many disciplines. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) in particular is used to detect dependence between a categorical and a numerical variable. Here we show how one can carry out this hypothesis test under the restrictions of differential privacy. We show that the F -statistic, the optimal test statistic in the public setting, is no longer optimal in the private setting, and we develop ...

Ira C. Harris,

This commentary adopts a cross-disciplinary framework to discuss possible influences of both family and ethnicity on business performance in the marketplace. Both family and ethnicity are viewed as “upstream factors” that may help a business gain a favorable identity with potential stakeholders. Family businesses that have an ethnic background in common with customers, employees, and suppliers may receive preferential treatment. Communities may patronize a business simply because of an associated ...

Abstract Our study theoretically and empirically examines performance antecedents and consequences of the Fortune annual Survey of Corporate Reputation. Accounting‐and market‐based measures of performance are used to predict the raings, and investor reactions to the publication of the ratings are predicted to be associated with the extent to which the ratings diverge from antecedent predictions. Lower‐than‐predicted ratings should generate a negative response while higher‐than‐predicted ratings ...

Electromyography was done in patients at the C6 level of quadriplegia after transfer of the brachioradialis to the flexor pollicis longus to restore lateral pinch and transfer of the posterior deltoid to the triceps to restore elbow extension. The relationship of the integrated electromyogram to pinch force during a graduated isometric contraction enabled characterization of the motor recruitment pattern. After tendon transfer, the pattern of the electromyographic response for the brachioradialis ...
