Study objectiveAccurate diagnostic testing to identify severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection is critical. Although highly specific, SARS-CoV-2 reverse transcriptase–polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) has been shown in clinical practice to be affected by a noninsignificant proportion of false-negative results. This study seeks to explore whether the integration of lung ultrasonography with clinical evaluation is associated with increased sensitivity for the diagnosis ...

The present study was performed in order to obtain the thiopurine methyltransferase (TPMT) activity frequency distribution histogram in a Spanish population. A total of 3640 Spanish clinical laboratory samples were evaluated, which included 1249 patients with Crohn’s disease, 589 with ulcerative colitis, 348 with multiple sclerosis (MS), 487 with several autoimmune diseases different from the above-mentioned diseases and 967 a donor group. This article deals with the solution of some multi-objective optimal control problems for several PDEs: linear and semilinear elliptic equations and stationary Navier-Stokes systems. More precisely, we look for Pareto equilibria associated to standard cost functionals. First, we study the linear and semilinear cases. We prove the existence of equilibria, we deduce appropriate optimality systems, we present some iterative algorithms and we establish convergence results. Then, we analyze the existence ...

To determine if there is a relationship between low serum ferritin and sleep disturbance in children with autism spectrum disorder, an 8-week open-label treatment trial with oral iron supplementation was conducted as a pilot study. At baseline and posttreatment visits, parents completed a Sleep Disturbance Scale for Children and a Food Record. Blood samples were obtained. Thirty-three children completed the study. Seventy-seven percent had restless sleep at baseline, which improved significantly ...

This paper deals with the solution of some multi-objective optimal control problems for several PDEs: linear and semilinear elliptic equations and stationary Navier-Stokes systems. Specifically, we look for Nash equilibria associated with standard cost functionals. For linear and semilinear elliptic equations, we prove the existence of equilibria and we deduce related optimality systems. For stationary Navier-Stokes equations, we prove the existence of Nash quasi-equilibria, i.e. solutions to the ...

During the COVID-19 pandemic, use of telemedicine with the aim of reducing the rate of viral transmission increased. This proof-of-concept observational study was planned to test the feasibility of a home-based lung ultrasound (LUS) follow-up performed by patients with mild COVID-19 infection on themselves. We enrolled patients presenting to the emergency department with SARS-CoV-2 infection without signs of pneumonia and indication to discharge. The effect of phonetic context on relative fundamental frequency (RFF) was examined, in order to develop stimuli sets with minimal within-speaker variability that can be implemented in future clinical protocols.Sixteen speakers with healthy voices produced RFF stimuli. Uniform utterances consisted of 3 repetitions of the same voiced sonorant-voiceless consonant-voiced sonorant speech sequence; moderately variable sentences contained speech sequences with a single voiceless phoneme (/f/, /s/, /ʃ/, /p/, / ...

This paper is devoted to the theoretical and numerical analysis of the null controllability of a quasi-linear parabolic equation. First, we establish a local controllability result. The proof relies on an appropriate inverse function argument. Then, we formulate an iterative algorithm for the computation of the null control and we prove a convergence result. Finally, we illustrate the analysis with some numerical experiments.

Azathioprine is an immunosuppressant drug widely used. Our purpose was to 1) determine whether its associated hepatotoxicity could be attributable to the induction of a necrotic or apoptotic effect in hepatocytes, and 2) elucidate the mechanism involved. To evaluate cellular responses to azathioprine, we used primary culture of isolated rat hepatocytes. Cell metabolic activity, reduced glutathione, cell proliferation, and lactate dehydrogenase release were assessed. Mitochondria were isolated from ...

One of the greatest challenges in providing early effective treatment in mood disorders is the early differential diagnosis between major depression (MDD) and bipolar disorder (BD). A remarkable need exists to identify reliable biomarkers for these disorders. Only three known cases of Townes–Brocks syndrome with proven SALL1 gene mutation and concurrent endocrine abnormalities have been previously documented to our knowledge [Kohlhase et al., 1999; Botzenhart et al., 2005; Choi et al., 2010]. Previously, we demonstrated that plasticity of frontal cortex is altered in aging rats: lesions of the nucleus basalis magnocellularis (NBM) produce larger declines in dendritic morphology in frontal cortex of aged rats compared to young adults. Cholinergic afferents from the NBM modulate glutamatergic transmission in neocortex, and glutamate is known to be involved in dendritic plasticity. To begin to identify possible mechanisms underlying age-related differences in plasticity after NBM lesion, ...

We prove that the limits of the semi-discrete and the discrete semi-implicit Euler schemes for the 3D Navier-Stokes equations supplemented with Dirichlet boundary conditions are suitable in the sense of Scheffer [1]. This provides a new proof of the existence of suitable weak solutions, first established by Caffarelli, Kohn and Nirenberg [2]. Our results are similar to the main result in [3]. We also present some additional remarks and open questions on suitable solutions.

γ-glutamyltranspeptidases (γ-GTs) are ubiquitous enzymes that catalyze the hydrolysis of γ-glutamyl bonds in glutathione and glutamine and the transfer of the released γ-glutamyl group to amino acids or short peptides. These enzymes are generally synthesized as precursor proteins, which undergo an intra-molecular autocatalytic cleavage yielding a large and a small subunit. In this study, circular dichroism and intrinsic fluorescence measurements have been used to investigate the structural features ...
