Endosperms from seeds of different subfamilies of Leguminosae were submitted to sequential aqueous and alkaline aqueous extractions. The extractions from species belonging to the Mimosoideae and Faboideae subfamilies yielded galactomannans with constant Man:Gal ratios, whereas the extractions from Caesalpinioideae seeds gave rise to galactomannans with increasing values of the Man:Gal ratio. The presence of a family of galactomannans within the same species may be a trait found only in Caesalpinioideae ...

Summary Candidate gene strategy has been proposed to direct the search for quantitative trait loci, and polymorphisms at these loci have been associated with several production traits in bovine. A total of 211 animals resulting from crosses between Nelore females with sires from either Aberdeen Angus, Canchim and Simmental breeds were analyzed for restriction fragment length polymorphisms (RFLPs) in the κ ‐casein, β ‐lactoglobulin (LGB) and growth hormone GH genes. Average daily gain from birth to weaning ( ...

Pleomorphic adenoma is the most common neoplasm in major and minor salivary glands. It constitutes approximately 90% of all benign salivary gland lesions and the parotid is the most affected location. When the minor salivary glands are affected, it mostly occurs at the junction of the hard and soft palates. The diagnosis is complex because of the great histological variety and biological behavior of this tumor, a histopathological examination being essential. The recommended treatment is surgical ...

Background: Promoting changes in abiotic conditions and ecosystem processes, such as decomposition, is a mechanism by which some exotic plant species displace native plants and become invasive.Aims: We monitored ramets of Hedychium coronarium over 30 months to estimate the litter decay rate, biomass dynamics and litter accumulation over time in riparian sites invaded by the species in southeastern Brazil. Methods: We measured the number, height, emergence and mortality of ramets in three environments ...

This work evaluated the influence of drought and nitrogen fertilization on the fatty acid composition of Jatropha curcas seeds by means of 1H HR-MAS NMR, a tool which allows obtaining chemical information directly from the seeds. It was found that only the drought conditions led to the decrease of polyunsaturated fatty acid contents and to the increase of those monounsaturated. No changes were observed for the contents of saturated fatty acids. The lipid profile reached without irrigation may be ...

This study was developed to evaluate selection effects on gene frequencies in a synthetic beef cattle cross (5/8 Charolais, 3/8 Zebu) named Canchim. A sample of 154 Canchim animals, representing three generation classes, was analyzed for seven molecular markers. Thirty-six Charolais cattle were also studied for comparison. A highly significant variation (P < 0.01), with a linear increase of the allele coding for valine at position 127 of the growth hormone peptide, was observed through generations. ...

Fasciolosis is caused by parasites of the genus Fasciola, affecting animals and humans worldwide. In South America, the disease is a result of infection with Fasciola hepatica and although animal infections are more frequently reported, the full extent of the impact on human health due to underdiagnosis remains uncertain. This study analyzed changes in land use and the distribution of F. hepatica in bovine livers in Brazil over 18 years. Data on land use and land cover were collected from the Mapbiomas ...

Herbaspirillum seropedicae is an endophytic bacterium that can fix nitrogen and synthesize phytohormones, which can lead to a plant growth-promoting effect when used as a microbial inoculant. Studies focused on mechanisms of action are crucial for a better understanding of the bacteria-plant interaction and optimization of plant growth-promoting response. This work aims to understand the underlined mechanisms responsible for the early stimulatory growth effects of H. seropedicae inoculation in maize. ...

Two different Ti oxide films produced by anodic oxidation were submitted to in vitro bioactivity and cell culture tests. The oxide films were produced in 1.0M H2SO4/150V and 1.0M Na2SO4/100V. Surfaces were found to be homogeneous and rough, with the presence of pores. Both oxide films presented anatase and rutile phases. Ti oxide film produced in Na2SO4 was rougher than the film grown with H2SO4 and composed of a rutile-rich phase. Both films were constituted by TiO2 and Ti2O3 oxides. Despite the ...

Nelore is the major beef cattle breed in Brazil with more than 130 million heads. Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) are often used to associate markers and genomic regions to growth and meat quality traits that can be used to assist selection programs.
