The United States is experiencing an unprecedented outbreak of e-cigarette, or vaping, product use-associated lung injury (EVALI) (1). All EVALI patients have used e-cigarette, or vaping, products, and most (≥85%) have reported using products containing tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) (2,3), the principal psychoactive component of cannabis. To examine whether e-cigarette, or vaping, product use behaviors differed between adult EVALI patients and adults who use these products but have not developed lung injury, ...

In many construction projects, design changes cause unexpected deviations from the client objectives. Project teams currently often find it difficult to identify in advance what the impact of a proposed change will be. The present research demonstrates that the use of graph-based algorithms can help project teams to identify which elements will be affected by a proposed change. The algorithms are applied in graph-based model using readily available information. A clustering algorithm identifies ...

Changes made in building projects during their design and execution are a major cause for delays, cost overruns and deviations from performance requirements. The impact of changes on the project often becomes clear only after their implementation in the project. At that stage it is difficult to make adjustments or consider alternatives. A timely recognition, by the project team, of the implications of proposed changes can lead to a reconsideration of the changes, so that the completed project would ...

Because of the fragmented nature of project information, decisions on changes in construction projects are usually based on project design instead of project requirements. This research proposes a new approach for coping with changes in construction projects: A change control tool (CCT) that will identify implications of a change as soon as it is proposed. The tool will ensure that the stakeholders involved in the decision process in which change proposals are evaluated will know in advance if a ...

AbstractAn extended research programme has examined over the past two decades how productivity in construction projects can be improved through the development of models for project monitoring and control, which process automatically collected data on the actual project performance. Tests that were conducted with these models demonstrate that this approach can help overcome some of the limitations of existing manual methods. However, they also indicate that certain manually obtained data are still ...

The paper presents models for optimal design and optimal scheduling of a HVAC system with thermal energy storage (TES). The objective function for the optimal design accounts also for optimal operation of the system. The optimal-scheduling model refers to a full charge-discharge cycle of the storage. Both models involve a detailed description for operation of the HVAC main components: the chiller and the storage tank, based on actual information provided by manufacturers. The computer algorithms ...

Vitamin E acetate, which has been detected in tetrahydrocannabinol -containing e-cigarette, or vaping, products, is strongly linked to the e-cigarette, or vaping, product use–associated lung injury outbreak; however, evidence is not sufficient to rule out the contribution of other chemicals of concern, including chemicals in either THC- or non-THC-containing products, in some reported EVALI cases.

Bacterial and viral infections often present with similar symptoms. Etiologic misdiagnosis can alter the trajectory of patient care, including antibiotic overuse. A host-protein signature comprising tumor necrosis factor-related apoptosis-inducing ligand (TRAIL), interferon gamma-induced protein-10 (IP-10), and C-reactive protein (CRP) was validated recently for differentiating bacterial from viral disease. However, a focused head-to-head comparison of its diagnostic performance against other biomarker ...

Respiratory tract infections (RTI) are more commonly caused by viral pathogens in children than in adults. Surprisingly, little is known about antibiotic use in children as compared to adults with RTI. This prospective study aimed to determine antibiotic misuse in children and adults with RTI, using an expert panel reference standard, in order to prioritise the target age population for antibiotic stewardship interventions. We recruited children and adults who presented at the emergency department ...

Bacterial and viral infections are often clinically indistinguishable, leading to inappropriate patient management and antibiotic misuse. Bacterial-induced host proteins such as procalcitonin, C-reactive protein (CRP), and Interleukin-6, are routinely used to support diagnosis of infection. However, their performance is negatively affected by inter-patient variability, including time from symptom onset, clinical syndrome, and pathogens. Our aim was to identify novel viral-induced host proteins that ...

Thermal energy storage (TES) is recognized as an important technique for energy management in heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems. This paper discusses the economic aspects of the optimal design for such systems. The model for optimal design so determines the sizes of the main components of the system - namely the chiller and the storage tank - that the system's life cycle cost is minimal. The model is based on linear programming and is implemented in a computer program for HVAC systems ...

BACKGROUND: Reliably distinguishing bacterial from viral infections is often challenging, leading to antibiotic misuse. Background The ability to accurately distinguish bacterial from viral infection would help clinicians better target antimicrobial therapy during suspected lower respiratory tract infections (LRTI). Although technological developments make it feasible to rapidly generate patient-specific microbiota profiles, evidence is required to show the clinical value of using microbiota data for infection diagnosis. In this study, we investigated whether adding nasal cavity microbiota profiles to readily available ...
