Platelet-derived microparticles (PMP) are elevated in a number of disorders (e.g. cardiovascular disease and cancer). In the present study, we have carried out a high-resolution 2-DE-based proteomic analysis of PMP originated following platelet activation with different stimulus. Flow cytometric analysis revealed a higher average number of microparticles when platelets are activated with shear (1800 s− 1) compared to 0.5 U/mL thrombin. Regarding the proteomic analysis, 30 protein features were found ...

CO2 laser has been used for the treatment of 22 patients with xanthelasma palpebrarum. This office procedure done under local anesthesia is fast and easy. The lipomatous yellow plaques are accurately photovaporized in a bloodless field, layer by layer, until the lesion is totally eradicated. The treated area heals by reepithelization, ostensibly with virtually no scar contraction. All our patients were satisfied with their results, rating them from good to excellent. In 5 patients some pigmentation ...

The surgical anatomy of the upper eyelid fat in the medial compartment was investigated in 388 patients and in 12 cadavers. We found two individual fat pads comprising this compartment. The difference among the investigated cases was found to be the extent of their separation. In 16.7 percent of the cadavers' eyelids the fat pads were entirely separated, in 45.8 percent they were separated to about half their length, while in 37.5 percent only the tips were separated. Among the patients in whom ...

The thermal contact resistance of two solids touching each another was analyzed with particular reference to the shape of a single heat channel. This channel was assumed to have a cylindrical contour whose radius near the interface decreases gradually to the contact area forming a truncated cone. The contact resistance of the interface was found as a function of the cone angle, the ratio of the radii of the truncated cone and the properties of the materials involved. From a numerical solution it ...

An experimental and theoretical study of flow and heat transfer regimes during quenching of a heated vertical channel is presented. The objective of the experimental portion of the research was to obtain quantitative data and observations on the reflooding of an annular channel typical to small research reactors. Data were used to assist the formulation of a theoretical model to predict the rate of precursory cooling during reflooding. Tests were carried out at constant inlet pressure using subcooled ...

A model of gas metal arc welding was developed that solves the magnetohydrodynamic equations for the flow and temperature fields of the molten electrode and plasma simultaneously, to form a fully coupled model. A commercial finite-element code was extended to include the effects of radiation, Lorentz forces, Joule heating and thermo-electric effects. The model predicts the shape of the free surfaces of the molten metal as the droplets form, detach, and merge with the weld pool. It also predicts ...

The purpose of the present study was to explore the possibility of detecting antibodies to Shigella sonnei lipopolysaccharide (LPS) in urine after infection or vaccination. Urinary immunoglobulin A (IgA) and IgG antibodies and specific IgA secretory protein against S. sonnei LPS were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), after adjustment for urine concentration. A significant antibody level was defined as one above a cutoff value calculated from the geometric mean + 2 standard deviations ...

Abstract A numerical computer code was developed for calculating the combined conduction and radiation transient heat transfer in cylindrical, semitransparent materials that have temperature-dependent thermal properties. The radiative component is combined with the equation of conduction heat transfer by adding it as a heat source. The finite element method (FEM) was used for calculating the radiative component and for solving the temperature field in the medium. Very good agreement was observed ...

The optimal radiofrequency (RF) power and lesion duration using contact force (CF) sensing catheters for atrial fibrillation (AF) ablation are unknown. We evaluate 50 W RF power for very short durations using CF sensing catheters during AF ablation. We evaluated 51 patients with paroxysmal (n = 20) or persistent (n = 31) AF undergoing initial RF ablation.A total of 3961 50 W RF lesions were given (average 77.6 ± 19.1/patient) for an average duration of only 11.2 ± 3.7 s. As CF increased from < 10 to > 40 g, the RF ...

Experimental data for sodium boiling on horizontal surfaces containing artificial cavities at heat fluxes of 20,000 to 300,000 Btu/ft2 hr and pressures between 40 to 106 mm Hg were obtained. Observations are made for stable boiling, unstable boiling and “bumping.” Some recorded temperature variations in the solid close to the nucleating cavity are presented. It is suggested that for liquid metals the time for bubble growth and departure is a very small fraction of the total bubble cycle, hence the ...

When a fluid is forced to flow over a vertical, flat plate, generating uniform heat flux, heat is transferred by forced convection. The temperature difference between the surface and the fluid creates changes in the fluid density, causing natural convection. Therefore forced convection is always coupled with natural convection. In the case of loss of cooling accident (LOCA) in a nuclear reactor, the heat transferred by forced convection can be of the same order of magnitude as that of natural convection, ...

Correcting a heterogeneous dataset that presents artefacts from several confounders is often an essential bioinformatics task. Attempting to remove these batch effects will result in some biologically meaningful signals being lost. Thus, a central challenge is assessing if the removal of unwanted technical variation harms the biological signal that is of interest to the researcher. We describe a novel framework, B-CeF, to evaluate the effectiveness of batch correction methods and their tendency ...

A modified shape factor was defined that combines the conduction heat transfer in the medium and the convection to the environment, with the geometrical characteristics of the problem. Infinite finite elements are used; these form the last layer of elements in the infinite directions. The modified shape factors for a sphere and for a long horizontal ...

ABSTRACT Infection with multiple ganciclovir-resistant human cytomegalovirus mutants, containing different substitutions and deletions in the UL97 gene, was found in a patient with severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID) within 3 weeks of ganciclovir therapy. A novel 11-codon deletion at positions 590 to 600 was identified. These unique findings may be related to the nature of the immunodeficiency in the SCID patient.

The supermedial thigh flap is an arterial and sensate flap. Anatomical studies reveal both large and small nutrient arteries. Its largest and most consistent artery is the superficial branch of the deep external pudendal artery, which constitutes the main circulation. The secondary blood supply to the base of the flaps is contributed by musculocutaneous perforators of the medial circumflex femoral artery. Subcutaneous branches of the superficial femoral artery, when present, are an additional source ...

A large body of evidence on the activity of regulatory T (Treg) cells was gathered during the last decade, and a similar number of reviews and opinion papers attempted to integrate the experimental findings. The abundant literature clearly delineates an exciting area of research but also underlines some major controversies. Bacterial and viral infections often present with similar symptoms. Etiologic misdiagnosis can alter the trajectory of patient care, including antibiotic overuse. A host-protein signature comprising tumor necrosis factor-related apoptosis-inducing ligand (TRAIL), interferon gamma-induced protein-10 (IP-10), and C-reactive protein (CRP) was validated recently for differentiating bacterial from viral disease. Over the past decade, significant progress in quantum technologies has been made and, hence, engineering of these systems has become an important research area. Many researchers have become interested in studying ways in which classical integrated circuits can be used to complement quantum mechanical systems, enabling more compact, performant, and/or extensible systems than would be otherwise feasible. In this article—written by a consortium of early contributors to the field—we provide a review ...
