Costs of photovoltaic systems have fallen over the last decade, while the energy prices have risen. As a result, PV system is being proposed as a cost-effective option for power generation in the built environment. However, some authors consider that better regulatory support is still needed to deploy the PV potential in cities. In this research, four illustrative cases, analyzed under five scenarios, show that the latter could be the case in a Mediterranean city with high annual solar radiation, ...

Cognitive symptoms after COVID-19 have been increasingly recognized several months after the acute infection and have been designated as "brain fog." We report a patient with cognitive symptoms that started immediately after COVID-19, in which cerebrospinal fluid biomarkers were highly suggestive of Alzheimer's disease. Our case highlights the need to examine patients with cognitive symptoms following COVID-19 comprehensively. A detailed assessment combining clinical, cognitive, and biomarker studies ...

In recent years, the interest to find alternative extraction methods has increased. Extraction of natural phenolics by enzymes produced during solid-state fermentation (SSF) is a useful and novel technique environmentally friendly. On the other hand, agro-industrial wastes are an excellent source of natural antioxidants as phenolics. The aim of the work was to evaluate the increase of antioxidant compounds extraction from agro-industrial wastes after SSF and to relate it to the production of lignocellulolytic ...

Abstract Recent findings indicate that N 2 fixation is significant in aphotic waters, presumably due to heterotrophic diazotrophs depending on organic matter for their nutrition. However, the relationship between organic matter and heterotrophic N 2 fixation remains unknown. Here we explore N 2 fixation in the deep chlorophyll maximum and underneath deep waters across the whole Mediterranean Sea and relate it to organic matter composition, characterized by optical and molecular methods. Transforming growth factor β1 (TGF-β1) has a relevant role in the origin and maintenance of glomerulosclerosis and tubule-interstitial fibrosis. TGF-β and Ras signaling pathways are closely related: TGF-β1 overcomes Ras mitogenic effects and Ras counteracts TGF-β signaling. Tubule-interstitial fibrosis is associated to increases in Ras, Erk, and Akt activation in a renal fibrosis model. We study the role of N- and H-Ras isoforms, and the involvement of the Ras effectors Erk and Akt, in TGF-β1-mediated ...

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a silent and poorly known killer. The current concept of CKD is relatively young and uptake by the public, physicians and health authorities is not widespread. Physicians still confuse CKD with chronic kidney insufficiency or failure. For the wider public and health authorities, CKD evokes kidney replacement therapy (KRT). In Spain, the prevalence of KRT is 0.13%. Thus health authorities may consider CKD a non-issue: very few persons eventually need KRT and, for those ...

Asexual and sexual life cycle events were studied in cultures of the toxic marine dinoflagellate Protoceratium reticulatum. Asexual division by desmoschisis was characterized morphologically and changes in DNA content were analyzed by flow cytometry. The results indicated that haploid cells with a C DNA content occurred only during the light period whereas a shift from a C to a 2C DNA content (indicative of S phase) took place only during darkness. The sexual life cycle was documented by examining ...

Despite their low platelet count some immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) patients seldom bleed, indicating the presence of factors to compensate thrombocytopenia. Moreover, ITP patients may have an increased risk for thrombosis. These facts suggest the presence of procoagulant mechanisms that have not been clarified yet. The aim of this study was to identify these possible factors. Moreover, the utility of rotational thromboelastometry (ROTEM® ) to test haemostasis in these patients was also evaluated. Patients ...

Thrombopoietin receptor agonists (TPO-RA) have recently been introduced for the treatment of immune thrombocytopenia (ITP), an anti-platelet-antibodies autoimmune disease. The observation of a low frequency of bleeding episodes despite their thrombocytopenia suggests the existence of a compensatory mechanism. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of TPO-RA treatment on platelet function and on the procoagulant state in ITP patients before (ITP-bR) and after responding (ITP-aR) to treatment. Plasma- ...

The Canadian Syncope Risk Score (CSRS) was developed to predict 30-day serious outcomes not evident during emergency department (ED) evaluation. To externally validate the CSRS and compare it with another validated score, the Osservatorio Epidemiologico della Sincope nel Lazio (OESIL) score.Prospective cohort study.Large, international, multicenter study recruiting patients in EDs in 8 countries on 3 continents.Patients with syncope aged 40 years or older presenting to the ED within 12 hours of syncope. ...

We consider the K3 surfaces that arise as double covers of the elliptic modular surface of level 5, $R_{5,5}$. Such surfaces have a natural elliptic fibration induced by the fibration on $R_{5,5}$. Moreover, they admit several other elliptic fibrations. We describe such fibrations in terms of linear systems of curves on $R_{5,5}$. This has a major advantage over other methods of classification of elliptic fibrations, namely, a simple algorithm that has as input equations of linear systems of curves ...
