Abstract The human cytomegalovirus developed distinct evasion mechanisms from the cellular antiviral response involving vMIA, a virally-encoded protein that is not only able to prevent cellular apoptosis but also to inhibit signalling downstream from mitochondrial MAVS. vMIA has been shown to localize at mitochondria and to trigger their fragmentation, a phenomenon proven to be essential for the signalling inhibition. Here, we demonstrate that vMIA is also localized at peroxisomes, induces their ...

Abstract Previous studies on monocarboxylate transporters expression in prostate cancer ( PCa ) have shown that monocarboxylate transporter 2 ( MCT 2) was clearly overexpressed in prostate malignant glands, pointing it out as a putative biomarker for PCa . However, its localization and possible role in PCa cells remained unclear. In this study, we demonstrate that MCT 2 localizes mainly at peroxisomes in PCa cells and is able to take advantage of the peroxisomal transport machinery by interacting with Pex19. ...

Soft tissue sarcomas (STSs) are a group of neoplasms, which, despite current therapeutic advances, still confer a poor outcome to half of the patients. As other solid tumors, STSs exhibit high glucose consumption rates, associated with worse prognosis and therapeutic response. As highly glycolytic tumors, we hypothesized that sarcomas should present an increased expression of lactate transporters (MCTs). Immunohistochemical expression of MCT1, MCT2, MCT4 and CD147 was assessed in a series of 86 STSs ...

Abstract Background Propolis is a resin collected by bees from plant buds and exudates, which is further processed through the activity of bee enzymes. Propolis has been shown to possess many biological and pharmacological properties, such as antimicrobial, antioxidant, immunostimulant and antitumor activities. Due to this bioactivity profile, this resin can become an alternative, economic and safe source of natural bioactive compounds. Antitumor action has been reported in vitro and in vivo for ...

Abstract Pregnancy is a time of distinct neural, physiological and behavioral plasticity in the female. It is also a time when a growing number of women are vulnerable to stress and experience stress-related diseases, such as depression and anxiety. However, the impact of stress during gestation on the neurobiology of the mother has yet to be determined, particularly with regard to changes in the hippocampus; a brain area that plays an important role in stress-related diseases. Therefore, the aim of the ...

Reprogramming of lipid metabolism directly contributes to malignant transformation and progression. The increased uptake of circulating lipids, the transfer of fatty acids from stromal adipocytes to cancer cells, the de novo fatty acid synthesis, and the fatty acid oxidation support the central role of lipids in many cancers, including prostate cancer (PCa). Fatty acid β-oxidation is the dominant bioenergetic pathway in PCa and recent evidence suggests that PCa takes advantage of the peroxisome transport ...

Upon intracellular recognition of viral RNA, RIG-I-like proteins interact with MAVS at peroxisomes and mitochondria, inducing its oligomerization and the downstream production of direct antiviral effectors. The human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) is able to specifically evade this antiviral response, via its antiapoptotic protein vMIA. Besides suppressing the programmed cell death of infected cells, vMIA inhibits the antiviral signalling at mitochondria by inducing the organelle's fragmentation, consequently ...

Invasive nonfunctioning pituitary tumors (NFPTs) are non-resectable neoplasms associated with frequent relapse and significant comorbidities. Current treatments, including somatostatin receptor 2 (SSTR2)-directed somatostatin analogs (SSAs), often fail against NFPTs. Thus, identifying effective therapies is clinically relevant. As NFPTs express SSTR3 at high levels, pasireotide, a multireceptor-targeted SSA, might be beneficial. Here we evaluated pasireotide in the only representative model of spontaneous ...

Oxidative desulfurization (ODS) is a method of removing sulfur from diesel fuel that has the potential to complement or even replace conventional hydrodesulfurization processes in oil refineries. One of the most promising variants of ODS is extractive and catalytic ODS (ECODS) in which the organic sulfur compounds in the liquid fuel are oxidized and extracted in situ from the oil phase into an extractant phase. In this study, the desulfurization of model and real diesel fuel has been performed in ...

This work proposes an efficient desulfurization system to produce low sulfur diesel under sustainable and moderate experimental conditions. Treatment of a real diesel with a sulfur content of 2300 ppm led to 80% desulfurization after 2 h. The processes used conciliate liquid-liquid extraction and sulfur oxidative catalysis. The catalytic performance of the commercial Keggin-polyoxomolybdate H3[PMo12O40] (PMo12) was strategically increased by simple cation exchange, using a long carbon chain (ODAPMo12, ...

H2O2 as oxidant, and an ionic liquid as extraction solvent. Under moderate conditions (50 °C) and short reaction times (<3 h), dibenzothiophene, 4-methyldibenzothiophene and 4,6-dimethyldibenzothiophene could be completely removed from the model diesel. The (pre)catalyst 1 was transformed in situ to the active catalyst [MoO(O2)2(di-tBu-bipy)]. By sequentially ...

The GH/IGF-I axis is important for bone growth, but its effects on joint function are not completely understood. Adult-onset GH-deficient individuals have often reduced bone mineral density (BMD). We have shown that adult IGHD individuals from the Itabaianinha, homozygous for the c.57+1G>A GHRHR mutation, have reduced bone stiffness, but BMD and joint status in this cohort are unknown. The ...

Regulations on the permissible levels of sulfur in transportation fuels are becoming ever more strict, with a global shift towards “zero sulfur” fuels, and the revamp of existing hydrodesulfurization (HDS) facilities to meet these lower caps is cost‐prohibitive. Metal‐catalyzed sulfoxidation chemistry is viewed as an economically viable desulfurization strategy that could complement conventional HDS technology. Highly efficient, deep desulfurization of a multi-component model diesel containing benzothiophene (BT), dibenzothiophene (DBT) and 4,6-dimethyldibenzothiophene (4,6-DMDBT) has been achieved by using the peroxophosphomolybdate [(n-C4H9)4N]3{PO4[MoO(O2)2]4} (Q3PMo4) directly as catalyst, and aqueous H2O2 as oxidant.
