The extinction coefficient, k(E), and refractive index, n(E), of zinc meso-tetra porphyrin (ZnP) when incorporated into nanoporous titania were measured in the range 1.7−4.2 eV, by using a method that accounts for both the microstructure and morphology of the semiconductor matrix. Optical and fluorescence spectra reveal the presence of a specific interaction between the porphyrin and TiO2 whereby ZnP becomes anchored onto the surface of porous titania in monomeric and as aggregated forms. Radiative ...

The photosynthetic pigments of higher plants exist in complex oligomeric states, which are difficult to study in vivo. To investigate aggregation processes of chlorophyll a (Chl a), we used an in vitro reconstitution procedure, with this pigment incorporated into liposomes of 1,2-dimyristoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (DMPC), micelles and pre-micelle media of the detergent n-dodecyltrimethylammonium chloride (DTAC), and mixed, spontaneous, DMPC—DTAC vesicles and micelles. Chl a oligomers were characterized ...

This paper evaluates the benefits of developing the mini-generation PV market in Portugal. It presents the legal framework and current status of the Portuguese PV electricity sector, and compares the country to other European nations: France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom. A model that combines PVGIS with a self-developed financial tool is used to assess the feasibility of a 150 kW mini-generation system using five different technologies: fixed mount, single-axis tracking, ...

Studies of excited singlet and triplet states of porphyrins and phthalocyanines in organized media of reverse micelles, vesicles, monolayers, and Langmuir-Blodgett films along with more complex supramolecular organizates with proteins and dendrimers, are reported. Self-assembly in these systems was followed by imaging and temporal fluorescence techniques.

The interactions of two anionic aluminum phthalocyanines (Pcs), the tetrasulfonated (AlPcS4) and the monosulfonated (AlPcS1) species, with the cationic detergent n-dodecyltrimethylammonium chloride (DTAC) were investigated. These studies were performed by UV–visible absorption, steady-state and transient-state fluorescence, fluorescence lifetime imaging microscopy (FLIM), and fluorescence correlation spectroscopy (FCS). For both AlPcS4 and AlPcS1, large complexes of Pc–DTAC were formed at low surfactant ...

A mechanism is proposed for the electrochemical reduction of tetrazolium blue (TB2+ ) on the surface of a dropping mercury electrode. The reaction was performed in a heterogeneous solvent: non-ionic micelles of Triton X-100, in an aqueous buffer solution, at pH 7.0. The mechanism, deduced from polarographic data, was found to consist of: (i) two irreversible diffusion-controlled processes, each one with two electrons transferred; and (ii) at least two more electron-transfer paths in which one or both ...

The spontaneous formation of vesicles was detected in aqueous mixtures of two cationic amphiphiles: the double-tailed didodecyldimethylammonium bromide, DDAB, and the single-tailed dodecyltrimethylammonium chloride, DTAC. These aggregates appear in a high-dilution region of the system, intermediate between those where monomers and micelles prevail, and are most easily formed at a considerable excess of the single-chained surfactant (DTAC/DDAB molar ratios ≈ 2−20). Vesicles were characterized at 25 ° ...

The molecular packing of meso-tetra(4-N-stearylpyridyl)porphine tetra-p-toluenesulfonate (PO) was investigated at the air/water interface and in Langmuir−Blodgett (LB) films in progressively more complex systems, namely, the pure component PO, PO mixed with sodium hexadecyl sulfate (SHS), and PO mixed with SHS and stearic acid (SA). The LB films formed at selected surface pressures have been analyzed by UV−visible absorption spectroscopy. The long transition in the pure PO monolayer was ascribed to ...

Two cationic porphyrins, the amphiphilic meso-tetra(4-N-stearylpyridyl)porphine (PO1) and the hydrophilic meso-tetra(4-N-methylpyridyl)porphine (TMPyP or PO2), were incorporated in ionic diluent matrixes containing sodium hexadecyl sulfate (SHS) and dioctadecyldimethylammonium bromide (DODAB) at the air−water interface and in Langmuir−Blodgett films. All systems containing PO1 show a preferential interaction of SHS with DODAB, instead of SHS with PO1. The cationic system PO1/SHS/DODAB at a 1:4:4 molar ...

Misinformation is a recurring problem that has experienced a significant growth in recent years due to the rapid development of the Internet. This development has driven the emergence of websites where their content is shared without control. This is even more dangerous in the health domain, given its specific nature and the increasing number of users searching for health-related information on the Internet. For these reasons, this information should be handled with special attention. In this paper, ...

The water-soluble tetracationic meso-tetra(4-methylpyridyl)porphine (PO2) was incorporated in mixed Langmuir monolayers (LM) with the anionic surfactant sodium hexadecylsulfate (SHS) and stearic acid (SA). The volume of published papers provided by the scientific community has increased over the last years in a drastic way. This fact has led to having a considerable growth of the topics covered by different publications. Despite topics under discussion on these publications were usually regarded as cutting edge subjects when released in conferences and journals, the restless evolution of science may have faded their relative importance away over the years. This issue undoubtedly poses big challenges ...
