Arabidopsis belongs to the Brassicaceae family and plays an important role as a model plant for which researchers have developed fine-tuned genome resources. Genome sequencing projects have been initiated for other members of the Brassicaceae family. Among these projects, research on Chinese cabbage (Brassica rapa subsp. pekinensis) started early because of strong interest in this species. Here, we report the development of a library of Chinese cabbage full-length cDNA clones, the RIKEN BRC B. rapa ...

We have prepared conductometric NO(2) gas sensors based on single-wall carbon nanotube (SWNT) networks. The SWNT properties are modified systematically by varying the annealing temperature between 350 to 550 degrees C under vacuum. Thermal annealing is not only necessary to remove dispersant used for nanotube dispersion but also plays an important role in optimizing the gas sensing abilities. In this paper, the sensing performance is evaluated through three crucial sensing characteristics: sensitivity ...

Stability of electronic parameters of conducting polymers affects the overall performance of organic electronics. We show that UV light (254 nm) treatment of polyaniline (PANI) films, containing camphorsulfonic acid (CSA) as a dopant and cast from formic acid, decreases the film resistance and keeps their improved resistance stable for at least 4 months. It has been found that due to the different origins of these electronic properties, the resistance and work function of the PANI·CSA films are affected ...

The influence of additional elements on grain refinement of copper alloys was considered. It was found that the addition of silicon to Cu–Zn alloys increases number of nucleation sites, and the addition of minute amounts of cobalt to Cu–Zn–Si alloys inhibits grain growth. Exploiting these effects, a Cu–10Zn–2.0Si–0.1Co alloy with fine grains of approximately 1.6 μm was obtained. The increase in the number of nucleation sites is considered to be due to the decreasing stacking fault energy upon the ...

In recent years a novel problem has arisen in organ transplantation medicine, namely GVHD. The nervous system has been involved mainly at the level of the CNS and this can lead to a serious outcome for the patient. In rare cases, peripheral nerves may be affected and show acute or chronic polyneuropathy. Here a case is reported of polyneuropathy associated with chronic GVHD. A 32‐year‐old man, suffering from chronic GVHD following an allogeneic bone marrow transplantation (BMT) for malignant lymphoma ...

We propose a unique fuzzy system design for adjusting the cycle ergometer work-load to each individual's physical work capacity. We observed the physical work capacity by measuring the heart rate and a muscular-fatigue-related index. A set of fuzzy membership functions was determined for three different phases during a trial of exercise with a progressively increasing workload. Since the available objective data was limited in describing changes in physical activities, the fuzzy rules for workload ...

A faujasite thin layer is synthesized on a quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) with an Au electrode without seed crystals, and applied to a gas sensor. Faujasite synthesis is often accompanied by the production of zeolite P as a by-product, which would be an obstacle for gas sensing. Seed crystals tend to result in an irregular layer structure which is unfavorable in view of the stable oscillation of the QCM. In this study, therefore, the synthesis conditions (i.e. composition of the synthesis solution, ...

We have studied the details of the magnetization reversal process in Ni–Fe nanowires and dots using magnetic field sweeping (MFS)-magnetic force microscopy (MFM). All the points within the nanowire and the dot show important changes in phase (changes in stray field) including a hysteresis loop, a decrease and an increase in phase, as the magnetic field is varied. From these results, it is demonstrated that domain wall motion dominates the magnetization reversal process of a 10-nm-thick Ni–Fe nanowire ...

Abstract The grafting reactions of styrene (St), methyl methacrylate (MMA), and vinyl acetate (VAc) were investigated in the presence of n ‐butyl acrylate–acrylonitrile copolymer. Results showed that the nature of monomer and initiator were the major factors influencing the grafting activity. The grafting efficiency was 0.87 for St, 0.26 for MMA, and 0.18 for VAc under the most favorable conditions. Acrylic rubber reduced the rate of polymerization, and the retarding effect increased in the order St, ...

Several recent studies suggest that cancer stem cells (CSCs) are involved in intrinsic resistance to cancer treatment. Maintenance of quiescence is crucial for establishing resistance of CSCs to cancer therapeutics. F-box/WD repeat-containing protein 7 (FBXW7) is a ubiquitin ligase that regulates quiescence by targeting the c-MYC protein for ubiquitination.
