Torasemide is a new loop diuretic that combines the effects of furosemide and spironolactone. There are no reports on the effects of torasemide in cats and dogs. This study compared the diuretic effects of furosemide and torasemide in cats and dogs. Cats with pressure overload cardiac hypertrophy were given oral placebo, torasemide 0.3 mg/kg, or furosemide 1 mg/kg or 3 mg/kg. Control and mitral regurgitation dogs were given oral placebo, torasemide 0.2 mg/kg, and furosemide 2 mg/kg for 7 days. Urine ...

The cerebellum regulates complex animal behaviors, such as motor control and spatial recognition, through communication with many other brain regions. The major targets of the cerebellar projections are the thalamic regions including the ventroanterior nucleus (VA) and ventrolateral nucleus (VL). Another thalamic target is the central lateral nucleus (CL), which receives the innervations mainly from the dentate nucleus (DN) in the cerebellum. Although previous electrophysiological studies suggest the ...

The ubiquitin (Ub) kinase PINK1 and the E3 Ub ligase Parkin, two gene products associated with young-onset Parkinson's disease (PD), participate in mitochondrial quality control. The phosphorylation of mitochondrial polyUb by PINK1, which is activated in a mitochondrial membrane potential (ΔΨm)-dependent manner, facilitates the mitochondrial translocation and concomitant enzymatic activation of Parkin, leading to the clearance of phospho-polyUb-tagged mitochondria via mitophagy. Thus, Ub phosphorylation ...

This study was performed to determine the prevalence, antimicrobial susceptibility, and genetic relatedness of Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica and Campylobacter spp. in poultry meat, and to analyze the association of genetic types of these bacteria with their geographical distribution and antimicrobial resistance profiles. Salmonella and Campylobacter isolates have been detected, respectively, in 54 and 71 samples out of 100 samples tested. Nine Salmonella serotypes were found, including S. ...

Purpose Anesthesia is often used in proton beam therapy (PBT) for pediatric patients and this may prolong the treatment time. The aim of the study was to examine preparation of pediatric patients to allow smooth performance of PBT. Material and methods Preparation was initiated 1–2 days before treatment planning CT and continued for 10 days. The patient first visited the facility to become familiar with the treatment room and staff. As the second step, the patient stayed in the treatment bed for ...

Abstract Purpose To evaluate the efficacy of proton beam therapy (PBT) for pediatric patients with advanced neuroblastoma. Methods PBT was conducted at 21 sites in 14 patients with neuroblastoma from 1984 to 2010. Most patients were difficult to treat with photon radiotherapy. Two and 6 patients were classified into stages 3 and 4, respectively, and 6 patients had recurrent disease. Seven of the 8 patients who received PBT as the initial treatment were classified as the high risk group. Twelve patients ...

Purpose To evaluate interobserver agreement in regard to measurements of focal ground-glass opacities (GGO) diameters on computed tomography (CT) images to identify increases in the size of GGOs. Materials and Methods Approval by the institutional review board and informed consent by the patients were obtained. Ten GGOs (mean size, 10.4 mm; range, 6.5–15 mm), one each in 10 patients (mean age, 65.9 years; range, 58–78 years), were used to make the diameter measurements. It is shown experimentally that the modulation bandwidth of quantum well lasers can be reduced by a factor of six due to carrier transport across undoped layers of the laser as in the separate confinement heterostructure (SCH). Analytical expressions are given for the modulation response function, resonance frequency, damping rate and K factor to include carrier transport, and it is shown that carrier transport is responsible for a low-frequency rolloff which limits the modulation response of quantum- ...

Abstract Background One of the purposes of treatment for dogs with mitral regurgitation (MR) is lowering left atrial pressure (LAP). There has been few study of the amlodipine in dogs with MR and amlodipine’s effect on LAP has not been fully evaluated in a quantitative manner because of difficulties in directly measuring LAP. The objective of our study was to compare the short-term effects of amlodipine (0.2 mg/kg PO q12h) vs benazepril (0.5 mg/kg PO q12h), on LAP and echocardiographic parameters in ...

Advanced database systems have to support complex data structures as treated in object-oriented data models and nested relational data models. In particular, efficient processing of set-valued object retrieval (simply, set retrieval) is indispensable for such systems. In the previous paper [6], we proposed the use of signature files as efficient set retrieval facilities and showed their potential capabilities based on a disk page access cost model. Retrieval with signature files is always accompanied ...

Monitor of all-sky image (MAXI) Gas Slit Camera (GSC) detects gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) including the bursts with soft spectra, such as X-ray flashes (XRFs). MAXI/GSC is sensitive to the energy range from 2 to 30 keV. This energy range is lower than other currently operating instruments which is capable of detecting GRBs. Since the beginning of the MAXI operation on August 15, 2009, GSC observed 35 GRBs up to the middle of 2013. One third of them are also observed by other satellites. The rest of them ...

Fibrillar amyloid β protein (Aβ) deposition is increased in the brains of patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD), and is manifested as senile plaques (SPs) and congophilic angiopathy (CA). Aβ40 and Aβ42(43), two chief species of Aβ, are documented in SPs and CA, as well as in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and cell culture media. Aβ42(43) is the major component of diffuse plaques, the earliest form of SPs. Thus, we hypothesized that determination of the amount of Aβ42(43) in CSF or plasma might provide a ...

In this paper, the problem of low frequency rolloff and limited bandwidth in long wavelength InP based multiple quantum well (MQW) lasers is discussed by investigating the dependence of resonance frequency and the damping factor on the strain, and structural design of the wells and barriers. To explain the small bandwidth, we use a model of the carrier transport effect with two parts of the carrier density, inside and outside of the quantum wells. The dependence of the K factor on the operating temperature ...

The Ugi reaction is a useful four-component coupling reaction for α-(acylamino)amide. However, selective transformation of the two amides is generally difficult. Here, we report 1-hydroxy-2-methyl-2-propyl isocyanide (HMPI) as a new member of a ‘convertible isocyanide’ class used to solve the problem. HMPI is odorless and shows good reactivity in the Ugi reaction to give N -(1-hydroxy-2-methyl-2-propyl) amides, which are smoothly converted into esters upon Zn(OTf) 2 -mediated solvolysis. Overall, structurally ...

Liquid-phase-epitaxial (LPE) growth of AlGaAs layers has been used in fabricating InGaAsP buried heterostructure visible lasers on GaAs substrate. InGaAsP/InGaAsP double heterostructure wafers were grown on the p-type GaAs substrates by means of the melt-back method prior to the LPE growth for eliminating phosphorus contamination. An SiO2 film mask was deposited on the epitaxial wafer surface by the rf sputtering, and photoetched with stripes of 7–10 μm width in the 〈110〉 direction. After etching ...
