To have a national methodology for pre-earthquake planning, a model for predicting the post-earthquake behavior of city lifeline systems was developed. We discussed three factors in the model: structural damage, functional damage, and the restoration process after the earthquake. The restoration process is basically described by a differential equation applicable to a service area represented by a census mesh, and is applied to the lifelines (i.e., supply systems of gas, electric power, and water) ...

This paper examines the application of the acryl plastic injection to the preparation of vascular corrosion microcasts for scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The original injection method using acryl plastic was described by Taniguchi, Ohta et al. in 1952 and 1955, under the title of "New improved method for injection of acrylic resin". Three dimensional observations were undertaken in our laboratory on the angiology at the macro- and microscopic levels of various organs from various mammals employing ...

We used four ferrets (Mustela putorius furo) and observed these animals dorsal tongue surface morphology via scanning electron microscope and light microscope. In this investigation, we focused on the food habits and discussed the morphology of the lingual papillae from the viewpoint of comparative anatomy. The ferret has conically-shaped filiform papillae in the posterior, middle and anterior region of the tongue body, and circular-distributed filiform papillae in the lingual apex region. The ferret ...

Two novel mitochondrial DNA base changes were identified at both sides of the 3243A > G mutation, the most common mutation associated with mitochondrial myopathy, encephalopathy, lactic acidosis, and stroke-like episodes (MELAS). One was a 3244G > A transition in a girl with MELAS. The other was a 3242G > A transition in a girl with a mitochondrial disorder without a MELAS phenotype. Although the two base changes were adjacent to the 3243A > G mutation, they had different effects on the clinical phenotype, ...

We examined whether or not NF-kappaB, a factor that regulates expression of the genes that code for pro-inflammatory cytokines, is activated in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) cells to investigate the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines by CSF cells in patients with meningitis. Western blotting demonstrated that NF-kappaB was more activated in CSF cells of patients with bacterial meningitis than in those of patients with aseptic meningitis. NF-kappaB was hardly activated in carcinomatous meningitis. ...

Adrenomedullin (AM) was originally identified in the extracts of human pheochromocytoma tissue, but this peptide is now known to be synthesized and secreted from many kinds of cells in the body, including vascular smooth muscle cells, endothelial cells, fibroblasts, cardiac myocytes, epithelial cells, and cancer cells. In this review, we summarize AM-secreting and AM gene-expressing cells in addition to the regulation of secretion and gene expression of AM. Although the data are still limited to ...

AbstractThis study determined the concentrations of interleukin-6 (IL-6), tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), soluble TNF receptor 1 (sTNFR1) and soluble E-selectin (sE-selectin) in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and serum from 15 children with influenza virus-associated encephalopathy to determine the role of cytokines in the pathogenesis. Cytokines and sTNFR1 were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. The CSF IL-6, TNF-α and sTNFR1 concentrations were elevated in 9, 4 and 4 of 12 children, respectively. ...

Neonatal asphyxia results in hypoxic-ischaemic encephalopathy. Previous studies have demonstrated that brain hypoxia and ischaemia lead to the production of proinflammatory cytokines, including tumour necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha), interleukin-1 (IL-1) and IL-6. Transcription factor NF-kappaB is essential for the expression of these cytokines. We examined whether or not NF-kappaB is activated in peripheral mononuclear cells (PBMC) in neonatal asphyxia by flow cytometry. In addition, we examined ...

The aim of this study was to biomechanically evaluate the primary stability of pure titanium orthodontic mini-implants, inserted into pre-drilled cavities of differing diameters. Mini-implants (1.2 mm diameter) were placed into 1.0 mm and 1.2 mm diameter cavities prepared in the mid-region of the bilateral hind leg femurs of anesthetized beagles. Removal torque strengths were measured immediately, 1, 3, 6, 9 and 12 weeks post-insertion of the implant. For mini-implants placed into 1-mm cavities, ...

Cross-clamping the main pulmonary artery (PA) is a risky, stressful procedure for the general thoracic surgeon performing video-assisted thoracic major pulmonary resection (VATS). However, converting VATS to thoracotomy each time PA clamping is planned is a poor tactic. We present a simpler technique for VATS than the traditional method involving a thoracotomy. In VATS, DeBakey vascular clamps with double angle jaws are inserted through 1-cm access incisions. We clamped the main PA so as to maintain ...

Most studies have shown that thoracic epidural analgesia reduces postoperative pain, but it carries potential risks. Recently, video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery has become an established technique that causes minimal postoperative pain. This report shows that thoracic epidural analgesia is not always necessary after video-assisted thoracoscopic lobectomy. From January to December 2007, 30 consecutive patients who underwent video-assisted thoracoscopic lobectomy were examined retrospectively. ...

It is well known that an acute encephalopathy occasionally follows prolonged febrile seizures. We measured the concentrations of interferon-γ, tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), interleukin-2 (IL-2), IL-4, IL-6, IL-10, and soluble TNF receptor 1 (sTNFR1) in serum and CSF during the acute stage in 13 children with acute encephalopathy following prolonged febrile seizures (AEPFS) and 23 with prolonged febrile seizures without encephalopathy (PFS) to investigate the pathogenesis of AEPFS. The aim of the present study was to examine the efficacy and potential side effects of repeated doses of oral sucrose for pain relief during procedures in NICU. Thirty-three preterm neonates were randomly allocated in blind fashion into two groups, the sucrose group (SG=17) and the control group (CG=16). The responses of neonates to pain and distress were assessed during blood collection on four consecutive assessment (ass.) days. For the first assessment, the neonates did not receive any solution ...

We found a novel protein–protein interaction between ubiquitin-specific protease 15 (USP15) and skeletal muscle LIM protein 1 (SLIM1): USP15 and SLIM1 directly bound under cell-free conditions and co-immunoprecipitated from the lysates of the cells, where they were co-expressed; and USP15 deubiquitinated SLIM1, resulting in the increase of protein levels of SLIM1. Because SLIM1 is strongly implicated in the pathogenesis of myopathies and cardiomyopathies, we generated transgenic (TG) mice with cardiac- ...
