José Barriga, Fernando Blanco-Cipollone, Emiliano Trigo-Córdoba, Iván Francisco García Tejero, Pedro J. Clemente,

Water is the most limiting natural resource in many semi-arid areas. This, together with the current climate change scenario, is fostering a context of uncertainty and major challenges concerning the sustainability and viability of existing agroecosystems. Crop water status based on three pre-established values (severe, mild, and no stress) is the essential datum needed to implement optimised irrigation scheduling based on deficit irrigation. Currently however, its calculation is a repetitive, tedious, ...

Abstract Breast cancer is a heterogeneous pathology, but the genomic basis of its variability remains poorly understood in populations other than Caucasians. Here, through DNA and RNA portraits we explored the molecular features of breast cancers in a set of Hispanic-Mexican (HM) women and compared them to public multi-ancestry datasets. HM patients present an earlier onset of the disease, particularly in aggressive clinical subtypes, compared to non-Hispanic women. The age-related COSMIC signature ...

Prevention of hyperlipidemia and associated diseases is a health priority. Natural products, such as the medicinal mushroom Ganoderma lucidum (Gl), have demonstrated hypocholesterolemic, prebiotic and antidiabetic properties. However, the underlying transcriptomic mechanisms by which Gl exerts bioactivities are not completely understood. We report a comprehensive hepatic and renal transcriptome profiling of C57BL/6 mice under the consumption of a high-cholesterol diet and two standardized Gl extracts ...

By-products valorization in bio-fuels industry is an important issue for making the global process more efficient, more profitable and closer to the concept of biorefinery. Fusel oil is a by-product of bioethanol production that can be considered as an inexpensive and renewable raw material for manufacturing value-added products. In this work, results in terms of composition and physicochemical properties of six samples of fusel oil from industrial alcohol facilities are presented. Composition of ...

microRNAs (miRNAs) are non coding RNAs with different biological functions and pathological implications. Given their role as post-transcriptional gene expression regulators, they are involved in several important physiological processes like development, cell differentiation and cell signaling. miRNAs act as modulators of gene expression programs in different diseases, particularly in cancer, where they act through the repression of genes which are critical for carcinogenesis. The expression level ...

Measurements were done in a dynamic equilibrium cell (Fischer Labodest VLE 602) at 50.66, 101.33 and 151.99 kPa. The experimental data were tested for thermodynamic consistency with total area, point, Van Ness, and Herington tests. Herington test was slightly modified considering the ΔHm/ΔGmE relation. Dynamics of surface roughness during polycrystalline pure iron electrodissolution is investigated at constant current density by means of ex situ atomic force microscopy. The scaling of the local surface width reveals that surface kinetic roughening is anomalous with both the exponents of local roughness, alpha(loc) , and growth, beta , close to 1 pointing out that interface evolution is unstable. We show that this anomalous unstable behavior results from the development of a faceted surface structure ...

Dysregulated metabolism is a common feature of cancer cells and is considered a hallmark of cancer. Altered tumor-metabolism confers an adaptive advantage to cancer cells to fulfill the high energetic requirements for the maintenance of high proliferation rates, similarly, reprogramming metabolism confers the ability to grow at low oxygen concentrations and to use alternative carbon sources. These phenomena result from the dysregulated expression of diverse genes, including those encoding microRNAs ( ...

Abstract: Cancer-cell communication is an important and complex process, achieved through a diversity of mechanisms that allows tumor cells to mold and influence their environment. In recent years, evidence has accumulated indicating that cells communicate via the release and delivery of microRNAs (miRNAs) packed into tumor-released (TR) exosomes. Understanding the role and mode of action of miRNAs from TR exosomes is of paramount importance in the field of cancer biomarker discovery and for the development ...

Classical swine fever (CSF) is a highly contagious viral infection affecting domestic and wild pigs. For classical swine fever virus (CSFV), immunization with plasmids expressing different versions of glycoprotein E2 has proven an effective way to induce protection. Previously, we have also shown that immunization with DNA vaccine expressing glycoprotein E2 (DNA-E2) induced specific T helper cell responses in the absence of neutralizing antibodies. However, the role of T cell responses in protection ...

The kinetic roughening of dissolving polycrystalline pure iron has been studied. A depth analysis of surface images has shown two consecutive growth regimes characterized by different scaling anomalous properties: an initial intrinsic anomalous scaling evolving in the thick film limit towards the theoretically conjectured faceted anomalous scaling. The COVID-19 zoonosis is bringing about a number of lessons to humanity. One is that of transforming our links with nature and, particularly, wildlife given the likely COVID-19 origin from illegal wildlife trading. Similar to vector borne diseases (VBD, diseases transmitted by vectors), the COVID-19 pandemic follows related patterns (e.g. no effective or available vaccines, difficult to diagnose, highly localized infection geographical foci, non-human reservoirs) for which we urgently need preventive ...

Despite the fact there are many studies regarding PM2.5 effects on human health, most of them were performed under conditions that do not simulate the natural particles interaction with the organism. In the present paper, we studied the effects of mammals' sub-chronic exposure to PM2.5 on the lower respiratory tract, addressing realistic ...
