A systematic search for aldehydes, ketones, and carboxylic acids was carried out in aqueous solutions of HCN, NH/sub 4/CN, CH/sub 3/CN, and C/sub 2/H/sub 4/CN, that had received multikilogray doses of /sup 60/Co ..gamma.. radiation. About 30 radiolytic products were identified, among them a large variety of dicarboxylic and tricarboxylic acids. Some of them might be of significant interest in molecular evolution studies of prebiotic processes. They originate in the free-radical-initiated chemical reactions ...

The industrial washing of corn grain during its milling generates a residue known as “corn steep liquor (CSL)”. This residue is rich in amino acids, carbohydrates, vitamins, and mineral nutrients that can stimulate the vegetative growth when applied to plants. However, the mode of action of this product is not yet known. This work involved the foliar and root application to pepper plants, at a dose of 5 mL L−1, of two CSL products (CSL-H and CSL-B), which differ in the way they have been stabilized. ...

Current diagnostic algorithms for systemic mastocytosis (SM) rely on the detection of KITD816V in blood to trigger subsequent bone marrow (BM) investigations. Here, we correlated the KITD816V mutational status of paired blood and BM samples from 368 adults diagnosed with mast cell activation syndrome (MCAS) and mastocytosis and determined the potential utility of investigating KITD816V in genomic DNA from blood-purified myeloid cell populations to increase diagnostic sensitivity. In a subset of 69 patients, ...

The presence of toxic metals in soil per se, and in soil impacted by mining, industry, agriculture and urbanisation in particular, is a major concern for both human health and ecotoxicology. The dual aim of this study was: to ascertain whether topsoil composition could influence the spatial distribution of mortality due to different types of cancer and to identify possible errors committed by epidemiological studies which analyse soil composition data as a closed number system. We conducted an ecological ...

Spatio-temporal cancer mortality studies in Spain have revealed patterns for some tumours which display a distribution that is similar across the sexes and persists over time. Such characteristics would be common to tumours that shared risk factors, including the geochemical composition of the soil. The aim of this study was to assess the possible association between heavy metal and metalloid levels in topsoil (upper soil horizon) and cancer mortality in mainland Spain. Ecological cancer mortality ...

A new configuration of the flipped voltage follower (FVF) offering class-AB operation is presented. The idea uses a bulk-driven transistor instead of the constant current source of the typical FVF topology. This feature enhances the sourcing capability for class-AB operation and the symmetrical slew rate. The key element is changing the basic structure of the original FVF circuit with no additional devices. A detailed analysis of the circuit and simulations using Spice are presented. The experimental ...

In this contribution a novel green chemistry approach for the synthesis of nanofibrous materials based on blends of carboxymethyl-cellulose (CMC)–silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) composite and polyvinyl-alcohol (PVA) is proposed. These nanofibrous materials were obtained from the electrospinning of blends of aqueous solutions of CMC–AgNPs composite and PVA, which were prepared at different CMC/PVA weight ratios in order to electrospin nanofibers applying a constant tension of 15 kV. The synthesized materials ...

The feeding behavior of algal consumers inhabiting sandy beaches and the consequences of this behavior on their performance are poorly understood. Food quality has been shown to influence the food preference of algal consumers. However, food preference can often be altered or subordinated to habitat choice. This study analyzes the feeding behavior (preference and consumption rate), absorption efficiency and growth rates of the talitrid amphipod Orchestoidea tuberculata (Nicolet, 1849) in relation ...

The adult lung is a complex organ whose large surface area interfaces extensively with both the environment and circulatory system. Yet, in spite of the high potential for exposure to environmental or systemic harm, epithelial cell turnover in adult lung is comparatively slow. Moreover, loss of lung function with advancing age is becoming an increasingly costly healthcare problem. Cell-based therapies stimulating endogenous stem/progenitor cells or supplying exogenous ones have therefore become ...

Less often, the tumors' size, number, and location can produce a mass effect that may lead to blood flow abnormalities or organ dysfunction (heart failure ...

DM has recently been associated with salivary amylase diagnostics that could further impair diagnoses in the diabetic population, as well as being an interesting alternative to traditional methods of determine glucose levels. The main advantage of this method is related to the fact that it is a fast diagnostic method. The DM population experiences changes to their metabolism ...

A correlation between the process parameters with the optical and mechanical properties of the films ...

Performance decline in Li-excess cathodes is generally attributed to structural degradation at the electrode-electrolyte interphase, including transition metal migration into the lithium layer and oxygen evolution into the electrolyte. Reactions between these new surface structures and/or reactive oxygen species in the electrolyte can lead to the formation of a cathode electrolyte interphase (CEI) on the surface of the electrode, though the link between CEI composition and the performance of Li-excess ...
