Hybridizations between domesticated escaped farmed fish and wild conspecifics may increase genetic diversity or break down locally adapted gene complexes, thus reducing competitive ability and overall fitness. We examined the genetic structure of six farmed populations of European seabass, Dicentrarchus labrax, of different geographical origin, and ten neighbouring wild populations in the Adriatic Sea using 10 microsatellite loci. All loci were polymorphic, with mean expected heterozygosity >74% ...

Aquaporin 3 (AQP3) is a peroxiporin, a membrane protein that channels hydrogen peroxide in addition to water and glycerol. AQP3 expression also correlates with tumor progression and malignancy and is, therefore, a potential target in breast cancer therapy. In addition, epithelial growth factor receptor (EGFR) plays an important role in breast cancer. Therefore, we investigated whether disruption of the lipid raft harboring EGFR could affect AQP3 expression, and conversely, whether AQP3 silencing would ...

The present paper deals with removal and photocatalytic degradation of the textile dyes by TiO2 nanoparticles immobilized onto chitosan-based microparticles. The microparticles composed of chitosan (Ch) and poly(methacrylic acid) (PMA) were fabricated for the first time by inverse suspension polymerization. They were utilized for colloidal TiO2 nanoparticles immobilization, synthetized by acidic hydrolysis of TiCl4. To evaluate the potential application of Ch/PMA/TiO2 microparticles for treatment ...

The effect of operating parameters on the thrombolytic potency of ultrasound (US) is important for potential therapeutic applications, but is not fully understood. Fresh human whole-blood thrombi were exposed in vitro to focused US from a diagnostic transducer driven by an impulse generator via an amplifier to vary duration (10 to 60 min), intensity (7 to 90 W/cm2), frequency (2 to 4.5 MHz), pulsed wave duty cycle (1:5 to 1:100 and continuous wave mode) and pulse length (100 to 400 μs). Segments of thrombi ( ...

In this study we want to test whether a simple modeling procedure used in the field of QSAR/QSPR can produce simple models that will be, at the same time, as accurate as robust Neural Network Ensemble (NNE) ones. We present results of application of two procedures for generating/selecting simple linear and nonlinear multiregression (MR) models: (1) method for selecting the best possible MR models (named as CROMRsel) and (2) Genetic Function Approximation (GFA) method from the Cerius2 program package. ...

This review discusses structure-property modeling applications of a novel variant of the Randic connectivity index that is called the sum-connectivity index. We compare published one-descriptor quantitative structure-property relationship (QSPR) models obtained with the new sum-connectivity index and with the Randic connectivity index, called here the product-connectivity index. Additionally, the efficiency of both variants of connectivity indices in QSPR modeling is tested on five datasets of alkanes ...

Protein kinase B/Akt regulates cellular metabolism, survival, and proliferation in response to hormones and growth factors. Hyperactivation of Akt is frequently observed in cancer, while Akt inactivation is associated with severe diabetes. Here, we investigated the molecular and cellular mechanisms that maintain Akt activity proportional to the activating stimulus. We show that binding of phosphatidylinositol-3,4,5-trisphosphate (PIP3) or PI(3,4)P2 to the PH domain allosterically activates Akt by ...

Abstract The properties of poly(vinyl acetate) compositions prepared as potential wood adhesives were investigated. The paper presents the results of the influence of various kinds of inorganic fillers based on calcium carbonate and alumino-silicate and an organic filler, starch, on the adhesive composition properties. The comparison among rheological behavior of the adhesive dispersions concerning the specific role of fillers were made. Mechanical and relaxation properties of the adhesive films ...

Abstract Calcium carbonate (CaCO 3 ) is used as filler in poly(vinyl acetate)(PVAc) composites to enhance the mechanical properties. The filler is often commercially surface treated with stearic acid to optimize the interfacial bonding and wetting. The effects of the interface on properties were studied using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) of films with initial and deformed morphologies. Plasticizing additives cause a significant change in the appearance of the films and a reduction in the glass ...

Breast cancer (BC) and ovarian cancer (OC) are among the most common and deadly cancers affecting women worldwide. Both are complex diseases with marked heterogeneity. Despite the induction of screening programs that increase the frequency of earlier diagnosis of BC, at a stage when the cancer is more likely to respond to therapy, which does not exist for OC, more than 50% of both cancers are diagnosed at an advanced stage. Initial therapy can put the cancer into remission. However, recurrences occur ...

Background/Aim. Development of imaging techniques, computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and positron emission tomography (PET), made great impact on radiotherapy treatment planning by improving the localization of target volumes. Breast cancer is still the leading cause of death in women of all ages. The reason for this is therapy resistance, which leads to the progression of the disease and the formation of metastases. Multidrug resistance (MDR) is a multifactorial process that leads to therapy failure. MDR involves multiple processes and many signaling pathways that support each other, making it difficult to overcome once established. Here, we discuss cellular-oxidative-stress-modulating factors focusing on transcription ...

Failure mechanisms of poly(acrylate) (PA) copolymer system filled with a diatom filler have been studied. The natural diatom filler is characterised by the original skeletal structure which allows high "inner" porosity and thus matrix penetration inside the filler particles and agglomerates of various shapes in PA composite. High diatom filler crystallinity influences the matrix re-structurization by changing the intensity ratio of matrix amorphous halos indicating the increased composite film inhomogeneity. ...

Abstract Woodworkers’ exposure to airborne particles is measured with different sampling techniques throughout the world. Due to a great number of exposure data obtained with different samplers, European countries have aimed over the last ten years to find a conversion factor for mass concentrations that would render these measurements comparable.
