Abstract The structure and function of cartilaginous constructs, engineered in vitro using bovine articular chondrocytes, biodegradable scaffolds and bioreactors, can be modulated by the conditions and duration of tissue cultivation. We hypothesized that the integrative properties of engineered cartilage depend on developmental stage of the construct and the extracellular matrix content of adjacent cartilage, and that some aspects of integration can be studied under controlled in vitro conditions. ...

Functional tissue engineering of cartilage involves the use of bioreactors designed to provide a controlled in vitro environment that embodies some of the biochemical and physical signals known to regulate chondrogenesis. Hydrodynamic conditions can affect in vitro tissue formation in at least two ways: by direct effects of hydrodynamic forces on cell morphology and function, and by indirect flow-induced changes in mass transfer of nutrients and metabolites. In the present work, we discuss the effects ...

Abstract Cell seeding of three‐dimensional polymer scaffolds is the first step of the cultivation of engineered tissues in bioreactors. Seeding requirements of large scaffolds to make implants for potential clinical use include: (a) high yield, to maximize the utilization of donor cells, (b) high kinetic rate, to minimize the time in suspension for anchorage‐dependent and shear‐sensitive cells, and (c) high and spatially uniform distribution of attached cells, for rapid and uniform tissue regeneration. ...

Analysis of safety in surface coal mines represents a very complex process. Published studies on mine safety analysis are usually based on research related to accidents statistics and hazard identification with risk assessment within the mining industry. Discussion in this paper is focused on the application of AI methods in the analysis of safety in mining environment. Complexity of the subject matter requires a high level of expert knowledge and great experience. The solution was found in the ...

Chronic periodontal infections may predispose to cardiovascular disease. Since tooth loss may be due to periodontitis it is assumed that tooth loss can also predisposes cardiovascular disease. The aim was to investigate the possible relationship between the severity of the clinical picture of periodontitis and the occurrence of cardiovascular disease. We evaluated the association between clinical periodontal parameters, tooth loss and cardiovascular incident. A total of 100 subjects (50 subjects diagnosed ...

The development of a comprehensive morphological dictionary of multi-word units for Serbian is a very demanding task, due to the complexity of Serbian morphology. Manual production of such a dictionary proved to be extremely time-consuming. In this paper we present a procedure that automatically produces dictionary lemmas for a given list of multi-word units. To accomplish this task the procedure relies on data in e-dictionaries of Serbian simple words, which are already well developed. We also ...

This study aims to investigate how national parks, identified as remarkable and, therefore, worthy of the trip, are visited and experienced. The main objective of this study was to explore the influence of memorable tourism experiences on environmentally responsible behavior, satisfaction, and behavioral intentions as its outcome. By giving an account of how national parks may be experienced by nature-based tourists, its main focus is on the concept of memorable nature-based tourist experience (MNBTE). ...

The influence of different derivational processes, e.g. derivation of augmentatives/diminutives and possessive adjectives from nouns, to the structure of Serbian synsets is examined. The provision of mechanical stimulation is believed to be necessary for the functional assembly of skeletal tissues, which are normally exposed to a variety of biomechanical signals in vivo. In this paper, we present a development and validation of a novel bioreactor aimed for skeletal tissue engineering that provides dynamic compression and perfusion of cultivated tissues. Dynamic compression can be applied at frequencies up to 67.5 Hz and displacements down to 5 ?m thus suitable for the simulation ...

The present review is aimed at elucidating the neonatal 'sepsis redox cycle' - the cascade of inflammatory and redox events involved in the pathogenesis of sepsis in neonates. While adult and neonatal sepses share some common features, there are some substantial differences: higher mortality rates occur in adult sepsis and worse long-term effects are evident in neonatal sepsis survivors. Such epidemiological data may be explained by the lower ability of IL6 and IL8 to activate NF-κB-regulated transcription ...

In the present work, we studied how the composition and mechanical properties of engineered cartilage can be modulated by the conditions and duration of in vitro cultivation, using three different environments: static flasks, mixed flasks, and rotating vessels. After 4-6 weeks, static culture yielded small and fragile constructs, while turbulent flow in mixed flasks ...

Abstract Background Existing feature selection methods typically do not consider prior knowledge in the form of structural relationships among features. In this study, the features are structured based on prior knowledge into groups. The problem addressed in this article is how to select one representative feature from each group such that the selected features are jointly discriminating the classes. The problem is formulated as a binary constrained optimization and the combinatorial optimization ...

Abstract Background Machine learning models have been adapted in biomedical research and practice for knowledge discovery and decision support. While mainstream biomedical informatics research focuses on developing more accurate models, the importance of data preprocessing draws less attention. The importance of monitoring and modelling the impact of climate change on crop phenology in a given ecosystem is ever-growing. For example, these procedures are useful when planning various processes that are important for plant protection. In order to proactively monitor the olive (Olea europaea)’s phenological response to changing environmental conditions, it is proposed to monitor the olive orchard with moving or stationary cameras, and to apply deep learning algorithms to track the timing of ...

Drone swarms are becoming a new tool for many tasks including surveillance, search, rescue, construction, and defense related activities. As their usage increases, so does the possibility of adversarial attacks on their contribution to these use cases. One possible avenue, whether deliberate or not, is to deny access to the position feedback offered by the Global Positioning System (GPS). Operating in these 'GPS denied' environments poses a new challenge; both in navigation, and in collision avoidance. ...

Plasma catalysis, biomedical applications or atomic layer deposition at atmospheric pressure all make use of non-thermal plasmas in contact with a wide variety of surfaces. As the presence of a target (substrate) has been shown to modify the plasma in addition to the plasma modifying the target, it is reasonable to describe and study the plasma-surface as one system. This work shows how the presence of dielectric and metallic targets influences a kHz AC-driven discharge in a He plasma jet. Next to ...

As the prevalence of drones increases, understanding and preparing for possible adversarial uses of drones and drone swarms is of paramount importance. Correspondingly, developing defensive mechanisms in which swarms can be used to protect against adversarial Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) is a problem that requires further attention.
