‘Helicoflex’ is a new type of flexible and elastic metal 0-ring. In this paper relations between sealing performance and the condition of the sealing surfaces are investigated for the Helicoflex gasket. Two kinds of sealing mechanism were found according to the surface conditions of the flange. In particular, when the surface of flange is superfinished, the soft metal sheet of the Helicoflex in contact with flange surface flows in the gap between elastic core and flange surface as the flanges are ...

The initial conditions found in infrared dark clouds (IRDCs) provide insights on how high-mass stars and stellar clusters form. We have conducted high-angular resolution and high-sensitivity observations toward thirty-nine massive IRDC clumps, which have been mosaicked using the 12m and 7m arrays from the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA). The targets are 70 $\mu$m dark massive (220-4900 $M_\odot$), dense ($>$10$^4$ cm$^{-3}$), and cold ($\sim$10-20K) clumps located at distances between 2 and ...

Abstract Studying the physical and chemical properties of cold and dense molecular clouds is crucial for the understanding of how stars form. Under the typical conditions of infrared dark clouds, CO is removed from the gas phase and trapped onto the surface of dust grains by the so-called depletion process. This suggests that the CO-depletion factor ( f D ) can be a useful chemical indicator for identifying cold and dense regions (i.e., prestellar cores). We have used the 1.3 mm continuum and C 18 O ( ...

Abstract With a mass of ∼1000 M ⊙ and a surface density of ∼0.5 g cm −2 , G023.477+0.114, also known as IRDC 18310-4, is an infrared dark cloud (IRDC) that has the potential to form high-mass stars and has been recognized as a promising prestellar clump candidate. To characterize the early stages of high-mass star formation, we have observed G023.477+0.114 as part of the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) Survey of 70 μ m Dark High-mass Clumps in Early Stages. We have conducted ∼1.″2 resolution ...

The Janus kinase inhibitor tofacitinib is currently being investigated as a disease-modifying agent in rheumatoid arthritis (RA). We investigated the in-vivo effects of tofacitinib treatment for 4 weeks on elevated circulating acute-phase serum amyloid (SAA) levels in 14 Japanese patients with RA. SAA levels fell from 110·5 ± 118·5 μg/ml (mean ± standard deviation) at treatment initiation to 15·3 ± 13·3 μg/ml after 4 weeks treatment with tofacitinib. The reduction in SAA levels was greater in patients receiving ...

Mutation of the APC gene occurs during the early stages of colorectal cancer development. To obtain new insights into the mechanisms underlying the aberrant activation of the Wnt pathway that accompanies APC mutation, we carried out a gas chromatography-mass spectrometry-based semiquantitative metabolome analysis. In vitro experiments comparing SW480 cells expressing normal APC and truncated APC indicated that the levels of metabolites involved in the latter stages of the intracellular tricarboxylic ...

A range of modes of mobility for spatial structures can be achieved by selecting the rotational features of the joints. Similar mechanical characteristics are observed in structures ranging from molecules to buildings. The local rotational manner in a solid with an internal spatial structure performs a key part in dictating the nature of structural deformability. In this paper, we propose a two-dimensional repetitive motion structure assembled with straight rigid bars connected by 8-bar pivot joints. ...

Using reaction pathway sampling, we have investigated the shear stress dependences of the activation energies of shuffle-set and glide-set dislocation nucleation from a sharp corner in silicon. The gradient of the glide-set dislocation curve is lower than that of the shuffle-set dislocation, and the athermal stress of glide-set dislocation is largely higher than that of shuffle-set dislocation. As a result, the two curves have a cross point, which means that shuffle-set dislocation is likely nucleated ...

Threshold strain required for a thermally activated dislocation nucleation from a Ni surface step has been measured using an atomistic-based reaction pathway analysis. We show that the saddle-point configuration and the stress-dependent activation energy are strongly influenced by the presence of a surface step. Our results provide insight into the previous experimental findings concerning the mechanism on a coherency loss at the Ni∕Cu(001) interface. We conclude that the coherency strain caused ...

This paper introduces a new all-metal gasket that incorporates strategically located circumferential annular lips that form seal lines with the flanges. This gasket, named Super Seal Gasket, by virtue of its special shape, makes use of the material's spring effect, resulting in sealing performance. This change in approach, from the traditional one based on material development to one of mechanical design, brings with it the need for optimization of the different design parameters for leakage performance. ...

Pulsed-field magnetization is a useful magnetization technique for high-temperature superconductivity bulk crystals for practical applications. However, the trapped magnetic flux is reduced due to the temperature increase from the mobile flux, and the distribution of the flux density is considerably distorted in the a–b crystallographic axes plane. We present two proposals to improve the trapped magnetic flux and its distribution upon pulsed-field magnetization. Firstly, split-type vortex pulsed ...

Martin's method, which is used to determine the internal displacement of atomic systems and elastic constants, is applied to the Tersoff potential. The potential is modified to provide an accurate description of the high-temperature elastic properties of silicon. The elastic constants of crystalline silicon were investigated at both low and high temperatures. Results were verified using the statistical thermodynamic method, i. e., 'Fluctuation formula'. It was found that values of elastic constants ...

Encapsulation of hemoglobin within a liposome is one of the strategies in the development of artificial oxygen carriers. It maintains the oxygen transporting properties of hemoglobin and, at the same time, eliminates the side effects of cell free hemoglobin. Hemoglobin vesicles (HbV) are a type of liposome encapsulated hemoglobin. They have a particle size of approximately 250 nm, a hemoglobin concentration of 10 g/ dl, and the oxygen affinity, P50, is regulated to 32 Torr. In this study the authors ...

We present here the first evidence, obtained by the use of solution X-ray scattering, of the solution structure of yeast calmodulin, a poor activator of vertebrate enzymes. The radius of gyration of yeast calmodulin decreased from 21.1 to 19.9 Å when excess Ca2+ ions were added. The profiles of the pair-distribution function suggested that yeast calmodulin without Ca2+ has a dumbbell-like shape which changes toward a rather asymmetric globular shape, from its dumbbell shape, by the binding of Ca2+. ...

A deep submicrometer gate MOSFET with fully depleted channel was fabricated using ultrathin Si film on SIMOX (separation by implanted oxygen) substrates. Ultrathin films with thicknesses down to 30 nm are shown to be effective in reduction of the short-channel effect. Thus, deep submicrometer gate MOSFETs with steep subthreshold slopes and threshold voltages insensitive to drain voltage were realized. The propagation delay of a CMOS inverter on an ultrathin SIMOX substrate was measured by a 51-stage ...
