Summary This study was undertaken to determine the proper use of skin tests with food extracts in diagnosis of hypersensitivity to food in children. Cutaneous reactions evoked by graded amounts of food extracts were compared with results of double‐blind food challenge and in vitro release of histamine from leucocytes. A 3 mm or greater weal reaction in skin tests by puncture technique using food extracts of 1:20 w/v concentration was found to indicate the degree of hypersensitivity likely to be ...

Background and AimsThere is increasing evidence that suppressed bud burst and thus epicormic shoot emergence (sprouting) are controlled by water–carbohydrate supplies to entire trees and buds. This direct evidence is still lacking for oak. In other respects, recent studies focused on sessile oak, Quercus petraea, have confirmed the important constraints of sprouting by epicormic ontogeny. The main objective of this paper was thus to provide provisional confirmation of the water–carbohydrate control ...

This paper introduces PTrees, a multi-scale dynamic point cloud segmentation dedicated to forest tree extraction from lidar point clouds. The method process the point data using the raw elevation values (Z) and compute height (H = Z − ground elevation) during post-processing using an innovative procedure allowing to preserve the geometry of crown points. Multiple segmentations are done at different scales. Segmentation criteria are then applied to dynamically select the best set of apices from the tree ...

In 1999, the major windstorm, Lothar, damaged many beech stands on the French Lorraine limestone plateau. Some of them were coppices with standards (CWS) while others were high forest (HF) stands. The use of statistical models to compare the wind firmness of different stand structures is often limited by poor estimates of the individual wind loading. Available knowledge about the mechanics of windthrow processes such as wind loading could improve statistical modeling. Our aim was to identify the main ...

Telomerase is the enzyme required for the addition of telomeric repeats to the ends of chromosomes and thus for chromosome stability. Most somatic human cells lack telomerase activity because they do not express the telomerase reverse transcriptase (hTERT) gene. In contrast, in almost every neoplasia, cancer cells express hTERT and therefore prevent progressive telomere shortening during each cell division. Consecutively, cancer cells obtain the ability to divide without limits and overcome replicative ...

The semiconducting and self-assembling properties of columnar discotic liquid crystals have stimulated intense research toward their application in organic solar cells, although with a rather disappointing outcome to date in terms of efficiencies. These failures call for a rational strategy to choose those molecular design features (e.g., lattice parameter, length and nature of peripheral chains) that could optimize solar cell performance. With this purpose, in this work we address for the first ...

Little is known about the expression of the polycythaemia rubra vera-1 (PRV-1) gene in bone marrow cells. To determine the expression level of PRV-1 in the bone marrow, we analysed PRV-1 quantitatively in Polycythaemia vera, other chronic myeloproliferative disorders, and reactive states. We demonstrated that PRV-1 was constitutively expressed in both myeloproliferative and reactive states. We concluded that, rather than an upregulation of the PRV-1 gene in the clonal haematopoiesis of polycythaemia ...

We experimentally measured the supercontinuum generation using 3-J, 30-fs laser pulses and measured white-light generation at the level of 1 J. Such high energy is allowed by a strong contribution to the continuum by the photon bath, as compared to the self-guided filaments. This contribution due to the recently observed congestion of the filament number density in the beam profile at very high intensity also results in a wider broadening for positively chirped pulses rather than for negatively ...

The pluripotent ground state is defined as a basal state free of epigenetic restrictions, which influence lineage specification. While naive embryonic stem cells (ESCs) can be maintained in a hypomethylated state with open chromatin when grown using two small-molecule inhibitors (2i)/leukemia inhibitory factor (LIF), in contrast to serum/LIF-grown ESCs that resemble early post-implantation embryos, broader features of the ground-state pluripotent epigenome are not well understood.
