Heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) plays a vital role in the catabolism of heme and yields equimolar amounts of biliverdin, carbon monoxide, and free iron. We report that macrophages engulfing either the low amount of heme-containing apoptotic thymocytes or the high amount of heme-containing eryptotic red blood cells (eRBCs) strongly upregulate HO-1. The induction by apoptotic thymocytes is dependent on soluble signals, which do not include adenylate cyclase activators but induce the p38 mitogen-activated protein ( ...

Adrenergic α1, α2 and β receptors are members of the G-protein-coupled receptor families (GPCRs) mediating physiological responses to adrenaline (epinephrine) and noradrenaline (norepinephrine). Since GPCRs are major targets for potential therapeutic agents, development of robust, reliable and cost effective functional screening methods for these receptors is in the focus of pharmacological research. For this reason, the aim of the present study was to develop an intracellular calcium assay for investigating ...

Heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1)-dependent carbon monoxide (CO) production related to reperfusion-induced ventricular fibrillation (VF) was studied in HO-1 wild-type (+/+), heterozygous (+/-), and homozygous (-/-) isolated ischemic/reperfused mouse heart. In HO-1 homozygous myocardium, under aerobic conditions, HO-1 enzyme activity, HO-1 mRNA, and protein expression were not detected in comparison with aerobically perfused wild-type and heterozygous myocardium. In wild-type, HO-1 hetero- and homozygous hearts subjected to 20 min ...

Some pedological and micromorphological investigations were carried out on representative red clay samples selected from a large number of profiles. On the basis of conclusions drawn from the analytical results, the red clays can be divided into the following groups: - The red clays of the foothills of the Tokaj Mountains were formed on rhyolite or rhyolite tuff, and are covered by loess in some areas. They are relic soils, older than loess, formed under the warm climate of the Tertiary Period. In ...

One of the most important method of habitat development is wildlife forage ground management. Many plant species can be grown on the crop fields, as mixture, too. Use of seed mixtures has not been spread on the native wildlife forage ground, however there are many advantages of them. The aim of the research is to examine the role of the different plant species, seed mixtures in the game feeding, the savouriness of the plants of crop fields, as well as ascertain which seed mixtures are more suitable ...

Neurofibrillary tangles are composed of insoluble aggregates of microtubule-associated protein Tau. In the pathology of Alzheimer's disease (AD), accumulation of hyperphosphorylated Tau results in formation of paired helical filaments. One of the main candidate to hyperphosphorylate Tau in AD is glycogen synthase kinase 3β (GSK-3β). Here we introduce a non-neuronal cell line, stably co-expressing human Tau and GSK-3β proteins, where the effect of potential kinase inhibitors on Tau phosphorylation ...
