By combining behavioural observations on adult resident brown trout Salmo trutta in the laboratory with radio telemetry studies in a natural stream, information on movement and space use in relation to social status was obtained. Dominant individuals moved longer distances and also tended to have larger home ranges than subordinates during the summer. In general, home ranges were larger during daytime than at night. Fish were not strictly territorial since the average overlap in interquartile range ...

The behavioural response of animals to predation risk commonly depends on the behaviour of potential predators. Here, we report an experiment investigating effects of predator model (a life-like wooden trout model) distance and movement on the behaviour of three-spined sticklebacks Gasterosteus aculeatus L. in a standardized experimental setting. When the predator model was immobile, the behaviour of the sticklebacks could, in general, not be clearly distinguished from a no-predator control treatment. ...

In boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT), 10B is delivered selectively to the tumour cells and the nuclide then forms high-LET radiation (4He2+ and 7Li3+) upon neutron capture. Today much research is focused on development of a variety of boron compounds aimed for BNCT. The compounds must be thoroughly analysed in preclinical tests regarding basic characteristics such as binding and subcellular distribution to enable accurate estimations of dose-modifying factors. DAC-1, 2-[2-(3-amino-propyl)-1,2-dicarba- ...

Abstract Staphylococcal enterotoxin H (SEH) is a bacterial superantigen secreted by Staphylococcus aureus. Superantigens are presented on the MHC class II and activate large amounts of T cells by cross-linking APC and T cells. In this study, RT-PCR was used to show that SEH stimulates human T cells via the Vα domain of TCR, in particular Vα10 (TRAV27), while no TCR Vβ-specific expansion was seen. This is in sharp contrast to all other studied bacterial superantigens, which are highly specific for ...

Abstract Background Fires have been an important natural disturbance and pervasive evolutionary force in the boreal biome. Yet, fire suppression has made forest fires rare in the managed landscapes in Fennoscandia, causing significant habitat loss for saproxylic species such as polypores and insects. To better understand how the beetle community changes (species turnover) after a wildfire in a landscape with intense fire suppression, we monitored beetles with flight intercept traps the first 3 years ...

Seven cell lines were analyzed for clonogenic survival after irradiation with photons (60Co) or accelerated helium or nitrogen ions. The cell lines showed different sensitivity to photon radiation and most of the differences decreased after irradiation with helium ions with a linear energy transfer (LET) of about 40 keV/μm. However, all cell types had individual LET sensitization patterns and the mean relative biological effectiveness (RBE) at 10% survival ranged from 1.46 ± 0.12 to 2.41 ± 0.26 for the ...

Cellulases are powerful chiral selectors especially for the separation of basic drugs. They have found applications both in liquid chromatography and capillary electrophoresis. Cellulases, which are produced in large amounts, are well characterised and thus useful for fundamental studies of the chiral recognition mechanism using, for instance, computer graphics. In this article, some guidelines and procedures are given for the optimisation of enantioselective separations by the mobile phase composition ( ...

Abstract Suspension PVC resins were prepared using dispersant systems based on a cellulose derivative, Methocel F50, and two poly(vinyl alcohol)s; Gohsenol GH20 and Rhodoviol 5/270. Ammonium laurate and Span 20 were tested as secondary dispersants. The resins were characterized by mercury porosimetry. The results showed that the porosity of the resins increased in the series Gohsenol < Methocel < Rhodoviol. This order seems to follow the order of increasing surface activity. A closer analysis of the ...

The structure of liquid water at ambient conditions is studied in ab initio molecular dynamics simulations in the NVE ensemble using van der Waals (vdW) density-functional theory, i.e., using the new exchange–correlation functionals optPBE-vdW and vdW-DF2, where the latter has softer nonlocal correlation terms. Inclusion of the more isotropic vdW interactions counteracts highly directional hydrogen bonds, which are enhanced by standard functionals. This brings about a softening of the microscopic ...

Soft-x-ray emission spectra from ${\mathrm{C}}_{2}{\mathrm{H}}_{4}/\mathrm{C}\mathrm{u}(110)$ and ${\mathrm{C}}_{6}{\mathrm{H}}_{6}/\mathrm{C}\mathrm{u}(110)$ have been obtained for two excitation energies, resonant and nonresonant, and resolved in all three spatial components (x,y,z). The one-step theory for resonant soft x-ray spectroscopy and Raman scattering is extended to adsorbates on metal surfaces and is implemented within a density-functional theory framework. The calculations are performed for ...

We present a two-stage process for target identification and pose estimation. A database of possible target states, i.e. identity and pose, is precomputed by a two-step clustering procedure, reflecting the two stages of the identification process. The current database is based on images generated from 3D CAD models of military ground vehicles on which realistic infrared textures have been applied. At the coarse level, the database is divided into a set of clusters, each represented by a small set ...

A 7-month outbreak of 15 cases of postpartum sepsis with group A haemolytic Streptococci (GAS) was stopped when a carrier was identified. Comparing delivery dates with duty rotas revealed that the carrier had been present during delivery in 13 of the 15 cases. The epidemic GAS type, T3-13-B3264, was found in a carbuncle in her groin and in atopic dermatitis lesions behind her ears and on her eyelids. Thus, it was not the microbiological screening of staff that helped detect the carrier. The outbreak ...

Recent experimental data demonstrate cardiovascular effects of the GH secretagogues (GHSs) hexarelin and ghrelin, the proposed natural ligand for the GHS receptor. Moreover, specific cardiac binding sites for GHSs have been suggested. The aim of the present study was to investigate if the natural ligand ghrelin and synthetic GHS peptide hexarelin and analogues have direct effects on the cardiomyocyte cell line, H9c2. Hexarelin stimulated thymidine incorporation in a dose-dependent manner with significant ...

Summary Although it is not clear to what extent density dependence acts on the survival, emigration or growth of organisms, experiments testing alternative explanations are rare. A field experiment on 1‐year‐old brown trout ( Salmo trutta L.) was undertaken to address the following questions: are the mortality, movement and growth of wild stream‐living trout affected by population density? If so, are the density‐dependent effects of released hatchery trout different from the effects of wild fish? ...

The kinetics of acetylene adsorption and cyclotrimerization was studied by vibrational sum-frequency generation spectroscopy (SFG) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. At low temperature, SFG shows two resonances corresponding to acetylene adsorbed in two different sites. Upon heating, two new vibrational resonances appear. We interpret these resonances as being due to C2H2 island formation and adsorbed C4H4, which is the intermediate in the subsequent cyclotrimerization reaction to form ...

Abstract Mast cells act as sensors in innate immunity and as effector cells in adaptive immune reactions. Here we demonstrate that SLC10A4, also referred to as the vesicular aminergic-associated transporter, VAAT, modifies mast cell degranulation. Strikingly, Slc10a4 −/− bone marrow-derived mast cells (BMMCs) had a significant reduction in the release of granule-associated mediators in response to IgE/antigen-mediated activation, whereas the in vitro development of mast cells, the storage of the granule- ...

The atom and symmetry specific properties of x-ray emission spectroscopy have been applied to the investigation of CO adsorbed on Ni(100) and Cu(100) surfaces. In comparison to ab initio electronic structure calculations, obtained in density functional theory, we develop a consistent electronic structure model of CO adsorption on transition and noble metals and extend to a conceptual model of the surface chemical bond. A strong CO–substrate interaction is found, characterized by significant hybridization ...

The interplay between the electronic and the geometric structure of adsorbates is of fundamental importance for the understanding of many surface phenomena. Using x-ray emission spectroscopy and ab initio cluster calculations, this issue has been investigated in unprecedented detail for CO adsorption in different adsorption sites. The investigation establishes pi bonding and sigma repulsion, both increasing with the number of coordinated metal atoms. The two contributions partly compensate each ...
