Globally, there is growing recognition of the potential of road verges to contribute to urban greening and ecosystem service provision, beyond their original functions of utility provision and public access. Numerous, diverse stakeholders are involved in their management, yet their shared and diverging perspectives on verge greening are poorly understood. This research examined the perspectives on road verge greening by 30 respondents from eight stakeholder groups from the Perth Metropolitan Area, ...

Obesity in adolescence is a major public health issue in Brazil. The relation between food and family plays an important role in both prevention and treatment, although its precise effect has not been clearly established. The purpose of this study is to investigate the meanings of food for Brazilian obese adolescents and their parents. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 19 individuals from two medical centers in Fortaleza-CE, Brazil: seven adolescents with obesity (six girls and one boy ...

Atrazine is the most common herbicide applied in crops of economic relevance, such as sugar cane, soybean, and corn. Atrazine and its derivatives desethylatrazine (DEA) and desisopropylatrazine (DIA) are toxic to the environment, affecting animal and human health. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate the degradation of atrazine and its derivatives by the fungus Pleurotus ostreatus INCQS 40310, as well as the potential of the enzymes involved in this process. P. ostreatus INCQS 40310 was able to degrade ...

Diagnosis of lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS) is based on clinical examination and imaging. The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of 3D gait analysis as a tool in the differential diagnosis of LSS. Fourteen patients participated in the study that consisted of three phases: (1) capture six gait cycles after rest, (2) walk on a treadmill for a maximum of 20 min, (3) capture six gait cycles after effort. From these data, the kinematic variables were compared with the perception of pain and the ...

Cardosins are aspartic proteinases of the flowers of Cynara cardunculus L. These flowers have economical relevance in Portugal since they are traditionally used in the manufacture of highly appreciated ewe cheeses such as Serra, Azeitäo and Serpa. Although the milk-clotting activity of the cardoon has been exploited for centuries, the biochemistry of the process was relatively unknown until some years ago when we and other laboratories started to study both basic and applied aspects of the cardoon ...

Specific and basicity solvent effects on the visible near-infrared electronic transitions and the electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) parameters of the copper(II) acetylacetonate complex, Cu(acac)2, have been investigated at the density functional theory level. The computed absorption transitions as well as the EPR parameters show a strong dependence on the direct coordination environment around the Cu(II) complex. High solvatocromic shifts are observed for 3d-3d transitions, with the highest effect ...

Although a successful kidney transplant (KTx) improves most of the mineral and bone disorders (MBD) produced by chronic kidney disease (CKD), hyperparathyroidism may persist (pHPT). Current guidelines recommend parathyroidectomy if serum parathormone is persistently elevated 1 year after KTx, because pHPT has been recently associated with poor graft outcomes. However, whether patients with pHPT and adequate renal function are at risk for long-term graft failure is unknown.Longitudinal follow-up of 911 ...

P21 is an immunomodulatory protein expressed throughout the life cycle of Trypanosoma cruzi , the etiologic agent of Chagas disease. In vitro and in vivo studies have shown that P21 plays an important role in the invasion of mammalian host cells and establishment of infection in a murine model. P21 functions as a signal transducer, triggering intracellular cascades in host cells and resulting in the remodeling of the actin cytoskeleton and parasite internalization. Furthermore, in vivo studies have ...
