A set of genes related to secondary metabolism was extracted from the sugarcane expressed sequence tag (SUCEST) database and was used to investigate both the gene expression pattern of key enzymes regulating the main biosynthetic secondary metabolism pathways and the major classes of metabolites involved in the response of sugarcane to environmental and developmental cues. The SUCEST database was constructed with tissues in different physiological conditions which had been collected under varied ...

The emergence of multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB; defined as resistance to at least rifampicin and isoniazid) represents a growing threat to public health and economic growth.Never before in the history of mankind have more patients been affected by MDR-TB than is the case today. The World Health Organization reports that MDR-TB outcomes are poor despite staggeringly high management costs. Moreover, treatment is prolonged, adverse events are common, and the majority of affected patients do ...

Temperature is the focus of many studies around the world due to several factors, such as population growth and land use and coverage changes, as these elements contribute to the increase/decrease of air temperature on the surface of a region. This study aimed to analyze the temperature trend in the metropolises of the Brazilian Amazon (Belém and Manaus), from 1978 to 2018, for the dry and rainy regimes, taking into account population growth and the change in land use and coverage of referred cities. ...

Papaya lethal yellowing virus (PLYV) causes an economically important disease in papayas in northeastern Brazil. Based on biological and molecular properties, PLYV has been tentatively assigned to the genus Sobemovirus. We report the sequence of the full-length genome of a PLYV isolate from Brazil, determined by deep sequencing. The PLYV genome is 4,145 nt long and contains four ORFs, with an arrangement identical to that of sobemoviruses. The polyprotein and CP display significant sequence identity ...

Black rot of crucifers, (Xanthomonas campestris pv. campestris) is the principal yield-limiting and destructive pathogen of cruciferous crop worldwide. In order to validate a bio-based control alternative for this disease, whey, lime sulfur, biofertilizer, Bordeaux mixture or raw milk were applied to kale (Brassica oleracea var. acephala) plants. The disease control was achieved by most of the tested products. Milk-based products (raw milk and whey) and biofertilizer reduced the severity by 44 and ...

Fungal infections have become a concern for health professionals, and the emergence of resistant strains has been reported for all known classes of antifungal drugs. Among the fungi causing disease, we highlight those that belong to the genus Aspergillus. For these reasons, the search for new antifungals is important. This study examines the effects of a coumarin derivative, 4-acetatecoumarin (Cou-UMB16) both alone and together with antifungal drugs, and its mode of action against Aspergillus spp. ...

Despite several works revealing different plant species producing volatile organic compounds (VOCs) toxic to plant-parasitic nematodes, nematicidal activities of VOCs are poorly investigated in medicinal species. Therefore, this work focused on exploring the activities of VOC emitted from medicinal plant leaves against the root-knot nematode (RKN) Meloidogyne incognita. By in vitro assays, leaves of thirteen medicinal species emitted VOCs that significantly immobilize the second-stage juveniles (J2) ...

Understanding the interaction of metal ions with melanin structures is essential to know some intricate functions of this kind of compounds in the living systems. The coordination chemistry of vanadyl oxycation, VO(II), and copper, Cu(II), in a synthetic l-dopa melanin (SM) was investigated using electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), Fourier transform infrared (FT IR) and ultraviolet–visible (UV–Vis) spectroscopy. ABSTRACT The presence of Helicobacter DNA species has been investigated in the biliary epithelium of patients with biliary diseases. However, conflicting results have been observed that may have been due to the small number of subjects studied, difficulty in obtaining a healthy control group, absence of controlling for confounding factors, or differences among populations. Therefore, we investigated the presence of Helicobacter species by culture and nested PCR of 16S rRNA genes in gallbladder tissue ...

To investigate the cagA status of H. pylori -infected patients and the relationship between cagA and peptic ulcer disease, gastric biopsy specimens from 103 Caucasian patients in Brazil were analyzed by PCR. Since allelic variation in cagA exists and distinct H. pylori subgenotypes may circulate in different regions, PCR using primers for a variable 3′ region of the cagA gene according ...

OBJECTIVE: The term Barrett's esophagus refers to a premalignant condition that is characterized by the replacement of the esophageal squamous mucosa by a columnar-lined one. Preliminary studies have demonstrated reversal of Barrett's mucosa after endoscopic coagulation with different techniques associated with acid inhibition. Abstract As the most abundant animals on earth, nematodes are a dominant component of the soil community. They play critical roles in regulating biogeochemical cycles and vegetation dynamics within and across landscapes and are an indicator of soil biological activity.
