The directed self-assembly (DSA) of two sub-20 nm pitch silicon-containing block copolymers (BCPs) was accomplished using a double-patterned sidewall scheme in which each lithographic prepatterned feature produced two regions for pattern registration. In doing so, the critical dimension of the lithographic prepatterns was relaxed by a factor of 2 compared to previously reported schemes for DSA. The key to enabling the double-patterned sidewall scheme is the exploitation of the oxidized sidewalls of ...

Junín virus (JUNV) is endemic to the fertile Pampas of Argentina, maintained in nature by the rodent host Calomys musculinus, and the causative agent of Argentine hemorrhagic fever (AHF), which is characterized by vascular dysfunction and fluid distribution abnormalities. Clinical as well as experimental studies implicate involvement of the endothelium in the pathogenesis of AHF, although little is known of its role. JUNV has been shown to result in productive infection of endothelial cells (ECs) in ...

Abstract. The VAMOS1 Ocean-Cloud-Atmosphere-Land Study Regional Experiment (VOCALS-REx) was an international field program designed to make observations of poorly understood but critical components of the coupled climate system of the southeast Pacific. This region is characterized by strong coastal upwelling, the coolest SSTs in the tropical belt, and is home to the largest subtropical stratocumulus deck on Earth. The field intensive phase of VOCALS-REx took place during October and November 2008 ...

A valid brand embarrassment tendency scale seeks to measure individual differences in people's proneness to feel embarrassed in relation to brands. Three studies identify potential items and validate the scale. In Study 1, with a sample of 338 German respondents, factor analyses and comprehensive validation procedures indicate one dimension that represents embarrassment tendency in relation to branded products. An asymmetric total synthesis of the novel and structurally complex epoxyquinol natural product (+)-panepophenanthrin has been accomplished, in which a biomimetic Diels–Alder dimerisation is a key step. The key monomeric precursor was assembled by an efficient Stille cross coupling of two readily available building blocks that upon standing underwent a diastereospecific dimerisation cascade in excellent yield.

A new neutral borate species, H2B4O7 (also known as tetraboric acid), with a one-dimensional chain structure, is found in the interlayer spacing in Rb2[(UO2)2B8O12F6]·H2B4O7 (RbUBOF-2) derived from boric acid flux reaction of uranyl(VI) nitrate with RbBF4. This new form of tetraboric acid possesses a novel borate fundamental building block with the symbol 4Δ:⟨3Δ⟩Δ.

Zika virus (ZIKV) is a mosquito borne flavivirus, which was a neglected tropical pathogen until it emerged and spread across the Pacific Area and the Americas, causing large human outbreaks associated with fetal abnormalities and neurological disease in adults. The factors that contributed to the emergence, spread and change in pathogenesis of ZIKV are not understood. We previously reported that ZIKV evades cellular antiviral responses by targeting STAT2 for degradation in human cells. In this study, ...

In the baboon, the 11beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (11beta-HSD)-catalyzed metabolism of maternal cortisol and cortisone by the placenta is an important component in the sequence of events regulating the function of the fetal pituitary-adrenocortical axis. The present study was designed to isolate and sequence the promoter region of the baboon 11beta-HSD-1 gene. The 11beta-HSD-1 genomic DNA was isolated from a baboon kidney genomic library using a human 11beta-HSD-1 cDNA as a probe. The sequence ...

The reactions of LnCl(3) with molten boric acid result in the formation of Ln[B(4)O(6)(OH)(2)Cl] (Ln = La-Nd), Ln(4)[B(18)O(25)(OH)(13)Cl(3)] (Ln = Sm, Eu), or Ln[B(6)O(9)(OH)(3)] (Ln = Y, Eu-Lu). The reactions of AnCl(3) (An = Pu, Am, Cm) with molten boric acid under the same conditions yield Pu[B(4)O(6)(OH)(2)Cl] and Pu(2)[B(13)O(19)(OH)(5)Cl(2)(H(2)O)(3)], Am[B(9)O(13)(OH)(4)]·H(2)O, or Cm(2)[B(14)O(20)(OH)(7)(H(2)O)(2)Cl]. In birds, corticosterone (CORT) appears to facilitate reproductive activity because baseline and stress-induced CORT levels are elevated in breeding individuals compared with other times of the year. In particular, CORT is lower in the sex providing most of the parental care (i.e., incubation), which could be an important adaptation to tolerate stressors that result in abandoning reproduction. Therefore, one explanation for sex differences in CORT is that lower levels are favoured during the incubation/ ...
