Patients lacking high molecular weight (HMW) kininogen have profound abnormalities of the Hageman factor-dependent pathways of coagulation, kinin formation, and fibrinolysis. The ability of HMW kininogen to potentiate the Hageman factor fragments (HFf) activation of prekallikrein and Factor XI in plasma was studied. HFf only partially converted Factor XI to XIa and prekallikrein to kallikrein in plasma deficient in HMW kininogen (Williams trait), while enhanced activation of Factor XI and prekallikrein ...

An asymptomatic woman (Ms. Williams) was found to have a severe abnormality in the surface-activated intrinsic coagulation, fibrinolytic, and kinin-generating pathways. Assays for known coagulation factors were nromal while Fletcher factor (pre-kallikrein) was 45%, insufficient to account for the observed markedly prolonged partial thromboplastin time. Plasminogen proactivator was present at 20% of normal levels and addition of highly purified plasminogen proactivator containing 10% plasminogen activator ...

There are significant challenges in addressing the mental health needs of college students. The current study tested an acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), web-based self-help program to treat a broad range of psychological problems students struggle with. A sample of 79 college students was randomized to web-based ACT or a waitlist condition, with assessments at baseline and posttreatment. Results indicated adequate acceptability and program engagement for the ACT website. Relative to waitlist, ...

The activation and function of surface-bound Hageman factor in human plasma are dependent upon both high molecular weight (HMW) kininogen and prekallikrein. HMW kininogen does not affect the binding of Hageman factor to surfaces, but it enhances the function of surface-bound Hageman factor as assessed by its ability to activate prekallikrein and Factor XI. The initial conversion of prekallikrein to kallikrein by the surface-bound Hageman factor in the presence of HMW kininogen is followed by a rapid ...

The use of nanoparticles in medical treatment has prompted the question of their safety. In this study, the pathophysiology and biodistribution of three different concentrations of intravenously-delivered dextran-coated Fe3O4 iron oxide nanoparticles (IONP) were evaluated in mice. Some groups of mice were exposed to an AC magnetic field (AMF) at levels comparable with those proposed for cancer treatments. Iron biodistribution analysis for both AMF and non-AMF treated mice was performed for all three ...

Hageman factor (factor XII) is present in plasma as an inactive precursor and is thought to be activated by contact with negatively charged surfaces of particles or macromolecules (1). The activated factor XII then acts directly on its three substrates, factor XI (PTA)(2), prekallikrein (3,4) and plasminogen proactivator (5), thus initiating the plasma proteolytic systems responsible for coagulation, kinin formation and fibrinolysis (Fig. 1).

Magnetic nanoparticles are being developed for a wide range of biomedical applications. In particular, hyperthermia involves heating the magnetic nanoparticles through exposure to an alternating magnetic field. These materials offer the potential to selectively treat cancer by heating cancer tissue locally and at the cellular level. This may be a successful method if there are enough particles in a tumor possessing a sufficiently high specific absorption rate (SAR) to deposit heat quickly while minimizing ...

Abstract Pacific trout Oncorhynchus spp. in western North America are strongly valued in ecological, socioeconomic, and cultural views, and have been the subject of substantial research and conservation efforts. Despite this, the understanding of their evolutionary histories, overall diversity, and challenges to their conservation is incomplete. We review the state of knowledge on these important issues, focusing on Pacific trout in the genus Oncorhynchus. Although most research on salmonid fishes ...
