Abstract Background The effect of risk-reducing salpingo-oophorectomy (RRSO) on breast cancer risk for BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutation carriers is uncertain. Retrospective analyses have suggested a protective effect but may be substantially biased. Prospective studies have had limited power, particularly for BRCA2 mutation carriers. Further, previous studies have not considered the effect of RRSO in the context of natural menopause. Methods A multi-centre prospective cohort of 2272 BRCA1 and 1605 BRCA2 ...

In order to assess the contribution of cytolethal distending toxin (CDT) to the toxigenicity and pathogenicity of Campylobacter jejuni, the C. jejuni 81-176 and C. jejuni NCTC 11168 CDTs were inactivated by insertional mutation of the cdtB toxin subunit. Cell-free sonicates from isogenic C. jejuni 81-176 cdtB − strains were found to be greatly attenuated in HeLa cytotoxicity assays, whilst still retaining some toxigenicity. Sonicates from a C. jejuni NCTC 11168 cdtB − strain produced no detectable cytotoxicity. ...

Subjects matched meaningful (e.g., FBI) or meaningless (e.g., IBF) letter strings. For "same" decisions meaningfulness was facilitatory, but this effect was slightly reversed for "different" decisions. Unfamiliar lowercase format abolished the meaningfulness effect. Even when stimulus degradation slowed performance, there was no interaction with meaningfulness.

Evidence-based rehabilitative interventions, if widely implemented, could equip people with dementia and their families to manage life with the condition and reduce the need for health and care services. The aim of this translational study, building on evidence from the GREAT randomised controlled trial, was to develop a foundation for implementing the GREAT Cognitive Rehabilitation intervention in community-based services for people with mild-to-moderate dementia.

Positive psychology interventions are widely used in primary and secondary education to enhance student engagement and well-being. When used in the higher education sector, interventions tend to be used in psychology, psychotherapy and mindfulness programmes with successful outcomes in terms of student engagement, learning and well-being. However, there is little evidence to support the effectiveness of such interventions in disciplines outside of psychology. This triangulated action research study ...

Background: Falls can pose a serious threat to hospice patients receiving palliative care. Interventions to reduce falls have yielded minimal results among older patients. Falls among hospice patients provide a unique population from which a new approach to fall prevention may need to be established. Objective: The aim is to devise a forecasting model with which to predict the probability of a patient fall and evaluate whether the model predicts patient falls better than existing measures. Methods: ...

Life-space is a promising method for estimating older adults' functional status. However, traditional life-space measures are costly and time consuming because they often rely on active subject participation. This study assesses the feasibility of using the global positioning system (GPS) function of smart phones to generate life-space indicators. We first evaluated the location accuracy of smart phone collected GPS points versus those acquired by a commercial GPS unit. We then assessed the specificity ...

Degeneration of cholinergic neurons is a well known characteristic of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Two radioligands were studied in a rat model of cholinergic degeneration to evaluate their potential efficacy for molecular imaging of AD. Following specific cholinergic-cell immunolesioning with 192 IgG-saporin (SAP), ex vivo autoradiography was performed with 123IBVM, a radioligand which targets the vesicular acetylcholine transporter (VAChT). Following the decay of 123I, the same animals had in vitro ...

There is a growing need to understand the inter-annual movements of mobile marine species of conservation concern to inform the design and placement of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) to maximise their conservation potential. We use satellite telemetry data from 36 basking sharks (Cetorhinus maximus) tracked in 2012, 2013 and 2014 (cumulative total: 1598 days; median: 44 days; range: 10–87 days) to quantify movements in coastal waters off the west coast of Scotland within the Sea of the Hebrides proposed ...

Abstract Animal migration is ubiquitous in nature with individuals within a population often exhibiting varying movement strategies. The basking shark ( Cetorhinus maximus ) is the world’s second largest fish species, however, a comprehensive understanding of their long-term wider-ranging movements in the north-east Atlantic is currently lacking. Seventy satellite tags were deployed on basking sharks over four years (2012–2015) off the west coast of Scotland and the Isle of Man. Data from 28 satellite ...

Abstract A locus at 19p13 is associated with breast cancer (BC) and ovarian cancer (OC) risk. Here we analyse 438 SNPs in this region in 46,451 BC and 15,438 OC cases, 15,252 BRCA1 mutation carriers and 73,444 controls and identify 13 candidate causal SNPs associated with serous OC ( P =9.2 × 10 −20 ), ER-negative BC ( P =1.1 × 10 −13 ), BRCA1 -associated BC ( P =7.7 × 10 −16 ) and triple negative BC ( P -diff=2 × 10 −5 ). Genotype-gene expression associations are identified for candidate target genes ANKLE1 ( P =2 × 10 −3 ) and ABHD8 ( P <2 × 10 − ...

We describe the use of the fast Fourier transform (FFT) in the measurement of anisotropy in electrospun scaffolds of gelatin as a function of the starting conditions. In electrospinning, fiber alignment and overall scaffold anisotropy can be manipulated by controlling the motion of the collecting mandrel with respect to the source electrospinning solution. By using FFT to assign relative alignment values to an electrospun matrix it is possible to systematically evaluate how different processing variables ...
