This paper complements previous studies on the effects of health on wages by addressing the problems of unobserved heterogeneity, sample selection, and endogeneity in one comprehensive framework. Using data from the German Socio-Economic Panel (GSOEP), we find the health variable to suffer from measurement error and a number of tests provide evidence that selection corrections are necessary. Good health leads to higher wages for men, while there appears to be no significant effect for women. Contingent ...

Abstract Aims We examined associations of obesity with incident cardiovascular outcomes and cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) phenotypes, integrating information from body mass index (BMI) and waist-to-hip ratio (WHR). Then, we used multiple mediation to define the role of obesity-related cardiac remodelling in driving obesity-outcome associations, independent of cardiometabolic diseases. Methods and results In 491 606 UK Biobank participants, using Cox proportional hazard models, greater obesity ( ...

Rigorous studies of water, sanitation, and hygiene interventions in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) suggest that children are exposed to enteric pathogens via multiple interacting pathways, including soil ingestion. In 30 compounds (household clusters) in low-income urban Maputo, Mozambique, we cultured Escherichia coli and quantified gene targets from soils (E. coli: ybbW, Shigella/enteroinvasive E. coli (EIEC): ipaH, Giardia duodenalis: β-giardin) using droplet digital PCR at three compound ...

Aim To link routinely collected health data to a cerebral palsy (CP) register in order to enable analysis of healthcare use by severity of CP. Method The Northern Ireland Cerebral Palsy Register was linked to hospital data. Data for those on the CP register born between 1st January 1981 and 31st December 2009 and alive in 2004 were extracted, forming a CP cohort ( n =1684; 57% males, 43% females; aged 0–24y). Frequencies of healthcare events, and the reasons for them, were reported according to CP severity ...

Mutations in the BRCA1 gene substantially increase a woman's lifetime risk of breast cancer. However, there is great variation in this increase in risk with several genetic and non-genetic modifiers identified. The BRCA1 protein plays a central role in DNA repair, a mechanism that is particularly instrumental in safeguarding cells against tumorigenesis. We hypothesized that polymorphisms that alter the expression and/or function of BRCA1 carried on the wild-type (non-mutated) copy of the BRCA1 gene ...

This study examined 94 serious further offences (SFOs) committed by offenders managed by the London Probation Area over a 14-month period between 2004 and 2006. Data was collated on background and criminogenic variables for the sample, as well as retrospectively administering a range of validated actuarial measures of risk prediction. The predictive validity of key variables embedded within the probation OASys tool were also examined, specifically the utility of the DSPD variables and the OGRS and ...

Craniofrontonasal syndrome (CFNS, MIM 304110) is an X-linked craniofacial disorder that shows paradoxically greater severity in heterozygous females than in hemizygous males. Mutations have been identified in the EFNB1 gene that encodes a member of the ephrin-B family of transmembrane ligands for Eph receptor tyrosine kinases. Here, we describe two unrelated families, in both of which a mother and her son have proven mutations in EFNB1. The mothers have classical features of CFNS; although the sons ...

Abstract The concluding episode of activity during the recent eruption of Mt. Unzen (October 1994 to February 1995) was characterized by incremental spine extrusion, accompanied by seismicity. Analysis of the seismic record reveals the occurrence of two dominant long‐period event families associated with a repeating, nondestructive source mechanism, which we attribute to magma failure and fault‐controlled ascent. We obtain constraints on the slip rate and distance of faulting events within these ...

Possible dementia is usually identified in primary care by general practitioners (GPs) who refer to specialists for diagnosis. Only two-thirds of dementia cases are currently recorded in primary care, so increasing the proportion of cases diagnosed is a strategic priority for the UK and internationally. Variables in the primary care record may indicate risk of developing dementia, and could be combined in a predictive model to help find patients who are missing a diagnosis. We conducted a meta-analysis ...

These antibodies are capable of neutralising HIV infectivity. The majority of neutrolising antibodies were specific for epitopes within ...

Abstract Gas‐and‐ash explosions at the Santiaguito dome complex, Guatemala, commonly occur through arcuate fractures, following a 5‐ to 6‐min period of inflation observed in long‐period seismic signals. Observation of active faults across the dome suggests a strong shear component, but as fault propagation generally proceeds through the coalescence of tensile fractures, we surmise that explosive eruptions require tensile rupture.
