This paper treats the question of control of two-dimensional incompressible, unsteady wake flow behind a circular cylinder at Reynolds number Re=100. Two finite-dimensional lower order models based on proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) are considered for the control system design. Control action is achieved via cylinder rotation. Linear optimal control theory is used for obtaining stabilizing feedback control systems. An expression for the region of stability of the system is derived. Simulation ...

Expansion of "low complex" repeats of amino acids such as glutamine (Poly-Q) is associated with protein misfolding and the development of degenerative diseases such as Huntington's disease. The mechanism by which such regions promote misfolding remains controversial, the function of many repeat-containing proteins (RCPs) remains obscure, and the role (if any) of repeat regions remains to be determined. Here, a Web-accessible database of RCPs is presented. The distribution and evolution of RCPs that ...

The metabolic turnover of mature elastin fibers in adult animals is relatively slow. Although only small amounts of elastin are degraded normally, increased degradation and fragmentation of elastic fibers may play a significant role in disease processes. Elastinolytic enzymes are found in microorganisms, snake venoms, and in a number of mammalian cells and tissues, including pancreas, polymorphonuclear leukocytes, and macrophages. Elastinolytic enzymes fall into all 4 classes of proteinases (aspartic, ...

Over 3% of human proteins contain single amino acid repeats (repeat-containing proteins, RCPs). Many repeats (homopeptides) localize to important proteins involved in transcription, and the expansion of certain repeats, in particular poly-Q and poly-A tracts, can also lead to the development of neurological diseases. Previous studies have suggested that the homopeptide makeup is a result of the presence of G+C-rich tracts in the encoding genes and that expansion occurs via replication slippage. Here, ...

Abstract Parkinson's disease is a complex disorder characterized by degeneration of dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra in the brain. Stem cell transplantation is aimed at replacing dopaminergic neurons because the most successful drug therapies affect these neurons and their synaptic targets. We show here that neural progenitors can be grown from the olfactory organ of humans, including those with Parkinson's disease. These neural progenitors proliferated and generated dopaminergic cells ...

Multiple system atrophy (MSA) exhibits widespread astrogliosis together with α-synuclein (α-syn) glial cytoplasmic inclusions (GCIs) in mature oligodendrocytes. We quantified astrocyte activation by morphometric analysis of MSA cases, and investigated the correlation to GCI proximity. Using Imaris software, we obtained "skinned" three-dimensional models of GFAP-positive astrocytes in MSA and control tissue (n=75) from confocal z-stacks and measured the astrocyte process length and thickness and radial ...

This paper describes a comprehensive review of 31 quasi or experimental research studies from the past decade on the effect of PhET simulations on students' conceptual understanding of physics. Two questions guided the review: (i) To what extent do PhET simulations enhance students' conceptual understanding of physics? (ii) What are the best ways to use PhET simulations to enhance conceptual understanding of physics? The reviewed literature provides robust evidence that PhET simulations can significantly ...
