A second generation meteor echo detection and collection system has been installed on the Christmas Island, Republic of Kiribati, stratosphere‐troposphere radar system. Data from the first 6 months of operation have yielded mean wind and tidal climatologies that are compared with theoretical models.

We have developed a meteor echo detection and collection system (MEDAC) that can be attached to many ST or MST radars operating in the VHF range. The system can be operated in parallel with the normal data collection of turbulent echoes. The use of the meteor echoes extends MST mesosphere observations into the night and extends ST capabilities into the mesosphere and lower thermosphere. This paper describes the system and presents preliminary wind measurements using the Platteville, Colorado, ST ...

Atmospheric tides are perturbations driven by the periodic absorption of solar radiation. They manifest themselves everywhere in the atmosphere, and an understanding of their sources, propagation, and interaction with other waves is vital to comprehend the global atmosphere. In order to measure the horizontal wind field in the mesosphere–lower thermosphere (MLT) over the geographical South Pole and use these measurements to understand the large‐scale dynamics of this region, a VHF meteor radar was ...

A VHF meteor radar system was installed at the geographical South Pole in 2001. The purpose of this system is to measure the horizontal wind field in the mesosphere–lower thermosphere (MLT) region and to understand the large‐scale dynamics of the Antarctic polar region. The radar operated for a few months in 2001 and with minor interruptions since that time. In this paper we will describe the meteor radar system, the data detection and collection process, and the postprocessing software that was ...

A meteor radar system was installed at the South Pole in 2001 to measure the horizontal wind field in the MLT region. It uses four 6‐element yagi antennas pointing in orthogonal directions for transmission. For reception two independent systems are used: the same yagi antennas used for transmission (COBRA data acquisition system) and an interferometric array of five crossed‐dipole antennas (MEDAC data acquisition system). In this paper we present and discuss VHF radio meteor observations from the ...

John Avery, James Avery,

Abstract Almost all modern quantum chemistry programs use Gaussian basis sets even though Gaussians cannot accurately represent the cusp at atomic nuclei, nor can they represent the slow decay of the wave function at large distances. The reason that Gaussians dominate quantum chemistry today is the great mathematical difficulty of evaluating interelectron repulsion integrals when exponential-type orbitals (ETOs) are used. In this paper we show that when many-centre Coulomb Sturmian ETOs are used ...

Kang H. Kwon, Chester S. Gardner, S. K. Avery, James Avery,

In November 1986, joint radar and Na lidar observations were conducted in Colorado to study mesopause dynamics. The radar observations were conducted at Platteville, Colorado with a Stratosphere Troposphere (ST) radar in a meteor echo detection mode. The Na lidar observations included ground‐based observations at Broomfield and Denver, Colorado, and airbome observations during three flights over the Great Plains, Rocky Mountains, and Pacific Coast. Both radar and lidar identified a 6‐hour wave that ...

We determined the effects of dietary protein and Ta on growth rates, food consumption rates, digestion rates, and digestive efficiencies of juvenile slider turtles (Trachemys scripta). Results from this study provide a clearer understanding of how these environmental factors interact in influencing body sizes and growth rates of individuals in wild slider turtle populations. Changes in plastron length, carapace length, and body mass were significantly greater for T. scripta eating 25% and 40% crude ...

John Avery, James Avery,

The generalized Sturmian method for obtaining solutions to the many-particle Schrödinger equation is reviewed. The method makes use of basis functions that are solutions of an approximate Schrödinger equation with a weighted zeroth-order potential. The weighting factors are especially chosen so that all the basis functions are isoenergetic with the state they are used to represent. This means that all the basis functions have turning points located in such a position that they can contribute usefully ...
