A stronger association for low-density lipoprotein particle (LDL-P) and high-density lipoprotein particle (HDL-P) versus cholesterol concentrations (LDL-C and HDL-C) in predicting coronary heart disease (CHD) has been noted. We evaluate the role of these factors and extent of particle-cholesterol discordance in those with diabetes mellitus (DM) and metabolic syndrome (MetS) for event prediction. In the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis, we examined discordance of LDL and HDL (defined as a subject's ...

The study proposed to identify balance strategies used by younger and older adults during gait under proprioceptive, visual, and simultaneous proprioceptive-visual challenges. Participants ambulated under 4 conditions: consistent, noncompliant surface; inconsistent, compliant surface (C); consistent, noncompliant surface with vision obscured (NCVO); and inconsistent, compliant surface with vision obscured (CVO). Balance adaptations were measured as changes in gait velocity, cadence, and gait-stability ...

Background The cholesterol content of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) particles is variable, causing frequent discrepancies between concentrations of LDL cholesterol (LDL-C) and LDL particle number (LDL-P). In managing patients at risk for cardiovascular disease (CVD) to LDL target levels, it is unclear whether LDL-C provides the optimum measure of residual risk and adequacy of LDL-lowering treatment. Objective To compare the ability of alternative measures of LDL to provide CVD risk discrimination at relatively ...

Patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus have an increased risk of cardiovascular events even when treated to low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol goals. The purpose of this study was to determine how many diabetic patients with low LDL cholesterol have correspondingly low numbers of LDL particles (LDL-P) and the extent to which those achieving target levels of LDL cholesterol and non–high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol might still harbor residual risk associated with increased LDL-P. Laboratory measurements of plasma lipids (principally cholesterol and triglycerides) and lipoprotein lipids (principally low-density lipoprotein [LDL] and low-density lipoprotein [HDL] cholesterol) are the cornerstone of the clinical assessment and management of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk. LDL particles, and to a lesser extent very-low-density lipoprotein [VLDL] particles, cause atherosclerosis, whereas HDL particles prevent or reverse this process through reverse cholesterol transport. ...

For the two weight classes, total N waste was reduced 32% and 25% while total P excretion was reduced 39% and 38%. The experimental results were used to calibrate the NCPIG model to predict N and P excretion levels. Model excretion values for the same diets showed similar ...

ABSTRACT This paper reports the results of field research examining the role of the nonprofessional fence in initiating and sustaining property crime. Interviews with fences, thieves, and ordinary citizens who bought stolen property were supplemented with analysis of official police records regarding the distribution of stolen property by burglars and shoplifters. Findings indicated that “direct marketing” to the ultimate consumer and to part- time and “amateur” fences is more common than previously ...
