Experimental data are presented for $K$-shell x-ray cross sections for electron capture to excited states by bare nuclei of F, O, N, C, and B in the energy range from \ensuremath{\sim}0.25 to 2.3 MeV/amu. For these projectiles the capture to excited states dominates the capture of the loosely bound electrons available in helium, and the projectile x-ray cross section is closely related to the total capture cross section. The experimental x-ray production cross sections are compared to predictions ...

This study was designed to estimate gross primary productivity (GPP) in the Duke Forest at both ambient and elevated CO2 (ambient + 200 μL/L) concentrations using a physiologically based canopy model. The model stratified the canopy of loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) forest into six layers and estimated photosynthesis in each layer according to the Farquhar submodel coupled with the Ball-Berry stomatal conductance submodel. The model was parameterized with a suite of physiological measurements, including ...

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is prevalent among children and adults across racial and ethnic groups, causing significant and pervasive impairment in home life, work, and relationships. This article includes a review of the literature surrounding utilization of mental health care and barriers to treatment for OCD in four specific ethnoracial minority groups, followed by an examination of minority participation in a large intensive/residential OCD treatment facility. Participants included 924 ...

Angular distributions have been measured and polarization fractions determined for target and projectile x rays emitted in collisions of 3-MeV protons on argon and 33-MeV fluorine ions on argon and helium. The near isotropy in target x-ray emission that follows $K$-shell ionization is not unexpected; however, the anisotropic emission of projectile x rays contradicts the assumptions that are made in the analysis of x-ray cross sections. The polarization of \ensuremath{\sim} 23% in this characteristic $ ...

Using a quasichemical approach, the total native defect concentration and the minimum deviation in stoichiometry have been calculated in CdTe crystals as a function of the Cd pressure at various temperatures. With this knowledge, CdTe and (Cd,Zn)Te wafers have been subjected to postgrowth step annealing treatment under conditions such that the crystals are in equilibrium with a Cd or (Cd,Zn) vapor corresponding to the minimum in deviation from stoichiometry at each annealing temperature. The step ...

We have identified limB, a gene encoding a novel LIM domain-containing protein, LIM2, in a screen for genes required for morphogenesis. limB null cells aggregate, although poorly, but they are unable to undergo morphogenesis, and the aggregates arrest at the mound stage. limB null cells exhibit an aberrant actin cytoskeleton and have numerous F-actin–enriched microspikes. The cells exhibit poor adhesion to a substratum and do not form tight cell–cell agglomerates in suspension. Furthermore, limB ...

Two high-throughput screening hits were investigated for SAR against human factor IXa. Both hits feature a benzamide linked to a [6-5]-heteroaryl via an alkyl amine. For the other hit, which contains a tetrahydropyrido-indazole amine, potency was improved 20-fold, from 2 μM to 0.09 μM. X-ray crystal structures were obtained for an example of each class which ...

Forests exchange large amounts of CO 2 with the atmosphere and can influence and be influenced by atmospheric CO 2 . There has been a recent proliferation of literature on the effects of atmospheric CO 2 on forest trees. More than 300 studies of trees on five different continents have been published in the last five years. These include an increasing number of field studies with a long‐term focus and involving CO 2 ×stress or environment interactions. The recent data on long‐term effects of elevated ...

Variation in timing and distance of dispersal movements of juvenile birds may result from differences in competitive ability. Dispersal by low-ranking juveniles may be initiated before dominants if the latter force subordinate siblings from natal areas. Conversely, when vacant territories are limited and are acquired on a first-come first-served basis, selection could operate on young to disperse as early as possible. In this case, dominant individuals with priority of access to resources in the ...
